People beleive what they want to beleive...If everyone beleived what facts indicated, then McDonalds would be out of business and George Bush wouldn't have been elected in the first place.

Why do people believe in religion?
by sinis ini still have a hard time wrapping my brain around this.
for example why do so many believe in the bible when ample proof exists that negats its validaty?
why not believe in zeus or jupitor, etc.

The original sin
by onacruse inthis is a question i've had for a long time.. according to the biblical account, adam and eve's sin was to eat fruit from the forbidden tree.. now, ordinarily, when we get caught doing something "wrong," we try to hide the "offending" member (the child tries to hide his hand that has the 'stolen' cookie; we hurriedly try to pull our pants back on when mom walks in unexpectedly while we're masturbating, etc.)..
so, if the "sin" of adam and eve was eating a forbidden fruit, then why wasn't their first impulse to hide their hands?
or to wipe off their mouths?

The BELLYBUTTONS!!!! DID THEY HAVE ANY FREAKIN' BELLYBUTTONS?!?!?!?! GOD!
agapa37, perhaps you can answer this for us? Inquiring minds want to know.
It's funny how you used part of my post (which was pointing out the superfluousness of this thread) to taunt agapa37....Obviously the sarcasm was lost on you....Whoosh!

Because the original sin was buttsecks!!! This whole line of inquiry assumes that the genesis account happened exactly as it was written and is therefore speculative at best. What is the purpose of speculating about what the original sin actually was when there is a larger issue at hand.................The BELLYBUTTONS!!!! DID THEY HAVE ANY FREAKIN' BELLYBUTTONS?!?!?!?! GOD!

The fastest scripture looker upper
by SacrificialLoon ina comment by rubadub in the thread about learning new things at the meetings made me remember something, and gave me a chuckle.. i would always see how fast i could look up the scriptures during the talks, and race to beat most everyone else.
of course everyone else didn't realize i was racing them, but i'd always feel a smug (and perhaps a bit self-righteous) satisfaction at having the scripture looked up and ready to follow along while from the sights and sounds around me most everyone else was still looking it up.
being able to look up jehovah's word with such speed would surely earn me spiritual brownie points.

Once I wasn't looking up the scriptures. Afterwards, a brother remarked on it. I said I only looked up the ones that I couldn't quote what they said without looking. Taken aback, he quizzed me on 3 and was stunned that I knew what they said.
HAHA!!!....in his FACE!!!!...

Our son is in jail for a crime. My fam says its my fault for leaving JW's.
by ontarget inmy wife and kids left jw's 7 years ago.
all seemed well and then last week my 20 year old son committed a crime and is now in jail 1500 miles away.
everyone that knows him says he is a good kid.

A person's exiting a religion has nothing to do with personal responsibility. Your son is responsible for the actions that landed him in jail. I'm sorry, but your family is simply too self involved to see the real issue. You need support and you need to be able to reassure your son that even though he screwed up, that his family still loves him. Obviously the family that you talked to does not want to adress that need, so you need to reassure your son that you can be counted on no matter what... It is truly sad to see such a lack of love and misplaced alegiance. I wish you the best in this difficult time.

Your opinion on my really important question, please.
by jambon1 indoes a jw upbringing simply confuse a child or is it really damaging?.
i have no doubt that a jw child is, at least, confused with life.
in my own case my wife brings up my 2 children (aged 5 & 2) as jw`s.

IMO: The most important thing is to give your children options....Make sure you get it into their heads that they are able to make decisions for themselves. Teach them how to think and that just because someone tells you that there is only one way to be, that doesn't neccesarily make it true.
I don't beleive that a child who is raised a JW is damaged, so much as they (as a whole with a few exceptions) are acclimated to a different environment. It's like being raised in texas and moving to chicago. It'll be 35 degrees and people in chicago will be taking the trash out in a T-shirt,....the person who was raised in texas will be out there in a snowsuit...Same type of thing; if a kid who was raised a dub stays a dub, he will be normal in the environment that he is in...if he decides to exit the JWs, he will have to get acclimated and will appear "damaged" by people who weren't raised in the same environment.
To avoid this culture shock, try to expose your children to as many different things as is possible. Also I deffinitely agree to not allow them to get baptized 'till 18...If they're not old enough to decide to die for their country, they shouldn't be allowed to decide to die for their god.
