  ive often said that i believe that i am a good friend to have around in times of trouble.

  tell me your problem once and ill do my best to help.

  tell me it again and i start to wonder why you havent fixed it yet.. as a silver-ish surfer in my mid 50s i reckon that ive had my fair share of ups and downs, so much of the stuff that exiting jws have to cope with is very familiar to me.

  As a “Silver-ish Surfer” in my mid 50’s I reckon that I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs, so much of the stuff that exiting JW’s have to cope with is very familiar to me. Often times I am quite taken aback at some of the remarkable displays of courage that we see on this board, particularly from some of the feisty ladies who will not tolerate being bullied by what I call “Oppressive People”. They recognise that they have a problem, they talk about it briefly and then they fix it! If they can’t fix it, they learn to deal with it as best they can, but it doesn’t stop them from living as full a life as possible.

  What really gets my goat however, is that we seem to be attracting a host of namby-pamby wingers on board who don’t seem at all interested in learning how to cope with their problems, or for that matter, even comprehend what a real problem actually is. Today, I have read posts by someone who hates the nicknames used for Italians, someone else doesn’t like being called “Coloured”, we even get presented with episodes of How My JW Mom Treated Me Today.

  I mean, if the biggest problem that you have is not liking a nickname, or you want to be a Person of Colour as opposed to a Coloured Person or that your JW mum is being impossible – they all are for Christ’s sake! –then it strikes me that your time would be better spent in assisting persons who have real problems instead of writing self-pitying drivel for me to read!

  So come on all you Permanent Victims, go and volunteer to help where help is really needed and lets keep this a board fit for hero’s.

  Love Letters Straight From Your ****.

  i don't suppose that people write letters to each other much any more.. i was just sifting through some old memorabilia, letters written by my grandfather from the trenches in ww1.

  a sad few moments reading letters from my father to his mother exhorting her to stay strong till '75.

  he also mentions that i should be back pioneering instead of courting, this, he writes, is the only way for me to find contentment.. then, bingo!

  Then, bingo! Letters from the object of my teenage affection herself, dated -Hmm, I'm not telling! BUT, the way that she signs off is so typical witness style, see if this jogs a few memories for you:

  After just being introduced: "Yours in Jehovahs service, **** ****."

  After just holding hands (gasp!) "Theocratic love from **** ****."

  After a passionate kiss: "Your Sister, (WHAT THE-!?) **** ****."

  Eventually I got the full "Theocratic love from your sister in Jehovahs service, as we sing and blah blah, **** ****."

  From there on in the endings get longer and longer, was she counting the time, I ask myself? On to the back of the envelopes!:

  S.W.A.L.K. Sealed with a loving kiss, easy peasy!

  E.G.Y.P.T. Ever grasping your pert ******?

  B.U.R.M.A? Hmm, Be undressed and ready my angel?

  Oh, no! A.S.H.B.Y.-D.E.-L.A.- Z.O.U.C.H?

  The amazing thing is that all this risque correspondence went on whilst we were both pioneering, I was a ministerial servant living at home with my PO dad who didn't seem to notice anything remiss at all.

  Maybe I'd better burn this lot before her Ladyship reads it all!

  It's Tuesday at 5.45pm. here on the coast. Temperature around 73, nice and sunny with a light breeze. Tomatoes and runner beans are doing well, got those fairly new SURFINIA'S - sorta trailin' petunia in hanging baskets - and theyre gorgeous.

  I'm trying bougainvillia for the first time, also brought back some bird of paradise plants from Madeira, I reckon I'll have to keep 'em in the conservatory over winter.

  i enjoyed englishman's post about americans vs europeans.

  i chose to start a new thread because i want to take the topic in another direction.. the usa is still a young nation and an enigma.

  the nation was created by european settlers who wanted to get away from things they did not like about europe, especially religious intolerance and inflexible governments, and have the opportunity to build a new future.

  Hmmm,

  Tina, I gotta say that I don't believe that it is in many persons hearts to be evil.

  Most people are kind and helpful.

  Most people rejoice when things go well with you.

  Religious organisations such as the dubs will have you believe that it is in man's nature to be sinful. I don't believe it, deviants are the exception in society, their mis-doings are seized upon by religious bodies as some sort of proof to justify their own existence.

  As for me, I believe what ABBA said: I believe in angels!

  American / European Incomprehension.

  reading through some of the posts re the mcveigh debate, it's obvious that there is a huge divide between the usa and europe over many issues, in particular with reference to the way that society should deal with deviants.. i think that there is a lot of other cultural differences between our societies, and i'm just wondering if this is why the wtbts has had a far higher "conversion factor" in the usa than in europe.. some of the phraseology contained in the watchtower magazines is incomprehensible to europeans.

  i remember that words that are in common usage now, were, when first used in the wt, totally baffling.. the expression "no way" wasn't in common use until years after the wt featured it, like wise with "points up", also "right on" meant nothing to anyone.

  indeed, many return visits to placed magazine householders resulted in them asking a bewildered dub for an explanation of these then strange terms.
