Depression in my cong was rife too. What IS going on? Is this just indicative of whats going on in society in general or is there a real problem in the Org?
I suspect its a bit of both. Yes there is more cases of depression in general nowadays, but this is made worse by being a Witness. It exacerbates the problem and highlights it by making the JW feelings of guilt and not doing enough a fundamental part of the religion.
I believe deep down, every JW knows there are real problems with this religion but they're trapped in it. If they allowed themselves to examine those disquieting thoughts, they'd all wake up. But that of course is too scary to contemplate, so a busy busy busy attitude is adopted to push away the disquieting thoughts and keep the status quo at all costs.
But all this burying of thoughts and denial take alot of effort. Its hard work staying in denial just as its hard work staying angry. So the next resort is to turn to anti-depressants.
After all, they live in a "spiritual paradise", they are "God's happy people" aren't they? They're told that is the way they're supposed to feel, so when they don't, they conclude something is wrong with them not the Org.
But in many cases the problem lies with the religion itself. Its just a JW isn't allowed, is too scared, or refuses to see it.
