What finally pushed you over the edge?

was there one issue or incident, final straw, so-to-speak, that made you leave once and for all?

i know there was for me.. i had been having doubts for years, and had stopped believing it was the truth.

but i labored on as a jw, in part because of my family, and in part because i had invested so much of myself in it.

Good Old Bill Harris, C.O for the Portsmouth UK area about 4 years ago finished it for me. He was giving his opening talk on a Tuesday evening telling the whole congregation how wrong it was for brothers to think independently of the faithful and discreet slave. He said that an independent attitude was evidence of pride and Jehovah hates pride. (I still have my notes from that talk) Then later in the talk he recounted the story of CT Russell who independently made a study of the scriptures in Allegheny.

I immediately thought, if its ok for Russell to research independently, why isn't it ok for us? The whole thing sruck me as nonsense and I began my research in earnest after that.

Thanks Bill, your nonsense in that talk really opened my eyes.

Just a bit more perspective here: From what religious cults did the followers of Jones and Waco initially come? Mainstream religious groups from which they eventually deviated and formed cults. Why compare JWs to these extreme groups when there is no evidence that this is what is happening in the Watchtower?
I was expressing a worst-case scenario guys, I wasn't suggesting physical danger was likely or imminent. But if the WT continues down the road of reasonableness in the public mag and extremism in the JW-only one, then discourages the friends from reading the public edition, the scene is set for radicalisation. Unlikely I know, but possible.
Mr Flipper, do you think you might be able to use this article in your relationship with your daughters? And anyone else who is being shunned by family?
Could this mag give some leverage?

an elder and his wife paid my mom a friendly shepherding call and they asked how my ex was doing.

she said, "fine, as far as she knows".

then they asked about my daughter and my mother praised her for her hard work and the fact that she won a special award within her company in which she gave a speech for, and then the former bethel elder said, "well, that's how satan the devil gets people, through praise and making people feel that their work is more important than anything else".

I agree hun, but surely their not "guided" or "inspired" but SPIRIT DIRECTED!!! Thats it! Just like the apostles were "borne along by Holy Spirit" Oh hang on, but that would mean they're INSPIRED and they said they're not. So they must be GUIDED,- which means......they're "borne along by Holy Spirit"! Yes? No. Oh hang on....but that would mean they're inspired and they said they weren't. SOOOOO... that must mean they're SPIRIT DIRECTED!! Yes?

So SPIRIT DIRECTED is different to being guided and inspired by Holy Spirit.

SO let me get this straight. They are NOT inspired which means they are not led by the Holy Spirit. But they are GUIDED by the Holy Spirit and DIRECTED by the Holy Spirit. But not LED by it.

Fancy me not knowing the difference, silly me.

So how does Jehovah provide this direction? Holy Spirit? No, the GB don't claim to be inspired so it can't be that.

What about email? Does God text? A nicely penned letter maybe? Or what about stone tablets? Worked for Moses

If what you say actually happens Billy then this Organization will steadily grow more dangerous. I don't just mean spiritually dangerous either, but physically dangerous, more cultlike. Jonestown and Waco come to mind.

This is the most appalling hypocrisy

This is what was studied at the meeting 2 weeks ago.

In other cases, the disfellowshipped relative may be living outside the immediate family circle and home. Although there might be a need for limited contact on some rare occasion to care for a necessary family matter, any such contact should be kept to a minimum. Loyal Christian family members do not look for excuses to have dealings with a disfellowshipped relative not living at home. Rather, loyalty to Jehovah and his organization moves them to uphold the Scriptural arrangement of disfellowshipping. Their loyal course has the best interests of the wrongdoer at heart and may help him to benefit from the discipline received.-Hebrews 12:11.

Yet they have the bloody nerve to print... "No-one should be forced to worship in a way that he finds unacceptable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family."

Just when I think my disgust of this Org can't get any deeper.....

Is anybody here that are being shunned by family members going to use this article? Mr Flipper?

These weren't Rutherford's statements. They were quotes from somebody else - from C. E. Jefferson, American Association for International Conciliation, and was previously quoted in a ZWT 1909. One strong anti-war letter from a Reverend was reproduced on p. 250-1.

The 'Anti-Christ' remark was the FM authors' own (Woodworth and Fisher).

Well ok fair enough, but the book was written at Rutherford's behest so it would be reasonable to say the book expressed his strong opinions even if he didn't pen them himself.
