Another aspiring author here. I have one about the Second Coming, but told from the viewpoint of atheists. I have worked on several drafts. Planning to start again soon.

i have the budded starts of maybe 4 of them in my hard drive.
i have been encouraged to finish them, but don't know if i ever will.
some of my writing was cathartic in purpose, and that cathartic crutch seems less needed these days.

i'm back, finally...more or less.
my computer died like 5 weeks ago and i'm still having problems even after rebuilding it twice.
if you've stopped in to check out my web site (www.atheistgeeknews.com) and noticed it was dead, it's because i haven't been able to get online much.
Thanks to everyone who commented on the article. You may notice that I haven't really gone into topics that stretch the boundaries of evidence too far or that smack too much of WT hatin'. I try to stick more to stuff that I think will be of use to exxers like us and try not to come off as overly prejudiced. I just think it gives the articles a greater ring of truth than a list of "Reasons Why The WTS Sucks" or whatever.
I hope to post some more XJW stuff soon at my site as well.

Yeah, I've had RAM problems, a hard drive failure, and a video card that kept blue screening. Plus I mistakenly ordered the wrong CPU for the el-cheapo motherboard I got (I'm pretty much broke, so price is a big concern) and had to wait another week for it to arrive. Then, when I finally got it all together, I've had other glitches I can't quite pin down and I spent another week reinstalling and rebuiling to sort it out. Sometimes Windows XP takes well over an hour to boot up, while at other times it snaps on screen faster than any PC I've ever owned! Defragging, registry scrubbing, driver removal...nothing seems to change it much. Then it started running slow last night, and I discovered that my USB add-in card isn't working properly.
Then I booted it up this morning, and everything seems to be fine. I hope it'll stay that way through the weekend so I can do some paying work! Crap. I've never had this many problems at one time.

I couldn't really write advice article for ex-JWs and atheists and whatnot on my JW-wife's machine. But I thought I would mention that Austin finally posted my last article that I sent in to him today.
http://atheism.about.com/od/jehovahswitnesses/a/SocietyControl.htm
Note the subtitle: "How the Governing Body and Elders Maintain Control over Jehovah's Witnesses." This is as close as I've come to calling them the "C" word on his site. No, not that C word. I mean "cult."
I haven't heard much from Austin since I got back, so he's probably been swamped. I'm still trying to sort out some computer problems so I can get back to work. (I work at home, which requires a fully working computer) Thought I was the computer guy, but this series of problems has just been weird. This last one still has me beat. Anyway, leave a comment for the article if you read it so Austin knows people are reading. Let me if it sucked, too.

i was reading this nonsense at my mom's house yesterday and when i agreed with one of the definitions for "discreet" from the article, i said, "how could anyone think they were ever discreet when they got everything wrong from russell's day until now?
were they discreet when they said because the end is so close you shouldn't get married, have children and make families??
is that "discreet" or just the opposite???
The thing that gets me about the F&DS is - how the heck do they "know" they're anointed by Jesus? I mean, if Jesus isn't communicating with them, then how could they even prove it to themselves? That makes zero sense. I could pull one of those numbers if I felt like it!
Me: "Yeah, looks like Jesus selected me to tell everyone what to do. Yes sir."
Them: "Why should we believe that??"
Me: "Cus I said so. Now do what I say or he'll kick you square in the pants! Obey! Obey! Booga-booga-booga!"
Them: "Couldn't he at least give us a sign or something?"
Me: "Look at this guy with his independent spirit, there! Where's your faith, pal? Maybe you need to be more humble. Look, I'm gonna go have a sandwich. When I get back, there better be a stack of money waiting for me if you know what's good for you!"
Them: "But ... I mean ..."
Me: "Just shut your pie hole and get to work! I've got a crap load of magazine to write so you losers can push'em on some unsuspecting rubes. Heh heh. Remember, don't rely on your own understanding. I'm as much a victim of Jesus's will as you, after all. Mine is but to follow him. Yours is to follow me. Armageddon's a coming, ya know..."
GOD, I love doing good things for people.

when it finally registered that you did not really have the "truth" after all, what went thru your mind?
.
when things "clicked", what was your emotional state and what did you about it?.
The process was so gradual for me that by the time I let go completely it was like, "Well, glad that's over." It lead to my becoming an atheist, but indirectly.
Stage 1: I'm simply unable to take it any more. Something is very wrong here. I'm either going to leave or hurt myself. Maybe I'll come back after the Society grows up. They mind their business, I'll mind mine. (They didn't, but that's another story)
Stage 2: Time passes. I begin to review the WT's critics and reject most of what they say. It's too far from what I expect, and I'm only "experimenting" with other points of view. I still believe in Jehovah, and think the Society could be the "True Religion" ... but for the moment, there is a sickness of arrogance eating away at it all. There has to be something more or better than this. Still, I do avoid things the Society says to avoid, like holidays and whatnot.
Stage 3: Years pass. I'm not so close to my WT related issues any more. I finally begin to see things more openly. I take another look at the critics, mostly those who investigated the Society's flawed literature. Thanks to people like Alan F. and his paper on the Creation Book (which I had rejected earlier as too much to be believed) I'm slapped in the face with the realization that the Society is utterly corrupt and knows it. I'm glad I got away and can't believe how duped I was. I let go of the Society entirely.
Stage 4: More years pass. I begin to reanalyze my beliefs and how I look at things. I start digging for more knowledge. I review the critics I read before to make sure I still agree with them. I decide to verify everything I can in Alan F's analysis of the Creation Book. I even contact some of the scientists he says were misquoted...and they confirm that they were misquoted, so there are no doubts. (I mostly did this because I want to be ready for the next Witness who wants to convert me--you know they'll just say the critics are liars) Along the way, I stumble across the writings of "evolutionists" and atheists. I begin to realize that I don't really take much of that religion and superstition stuff very seriously any more. I begin to see myself as an agnostic with atheist leanings.
Stage 5: My doubts about God and the supernatural are strengthened by a lot of daily research. I compare the writings of apologists with those of atheists and there doesn't seem to be any contest. I soon learn that I'm already an atheist as atheists define it. I say it to myself - "I'm an atheist" - and shrug. It seems to fit.
I remain an atheist today.

this should stay at the top of my front page (throughout the day at least).
i do this thing where i make up fake biographies for myself every monday and come up with ... um ... totally absurd crap, complete with doctored pictures.
i mention it here because i managed to bring up jws in this post.. some might like it.
I wanted to mention that none of the old stuff you've read before has gone anywhere. I start the front page over every Monday. There's a link to my past front pages at the bottom of AGN, so they're all there. You can also find my advice articles for XJWs all in one place with the "Ex-JW & WT" button on the menu bar.

Just thought I'd mention it if anyone wanted a laugh.

"advice for ex-jehovah's witnesses: how to handle it when they try to convert you".
it's the first article right at the top of the page for anyone that wants it.
i'll probably tweak it a little more, but this one makes suggestions on what to (and not do) when they get all righteous and try to convert you back into their truth.. later on, i'll have more suggested responses that might be of help as well.. isaacj.
Thanks for the replies everyone. It's good to know that I'm not the only one reading this stuff!
Your comments are appreciated.
