ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) — Enzymes involved in breaking down fat
can now be manipulated to work three times harder by turning on a
molecular switch recently observed by chemists at the University of
Copenhagen. Being able to control this chemical on/off button could
have massive implications for curing diseases related to obesity in-
cluding diabetes, cardio vascular disease, stroke and even skin
problems like acne. But the implications may be wider.Possibly the most important discovery in enzymology
The results suggest that the switch may be a common characteristic
of many more enzymes. Since enzymes are miniscule worker-molecules
that control a vast variety of functions in cells, if the switches
are standard, it may well be one of the most important discoveries
in enzymology."If many enzymes turn out to be switched on in the same way as the
ones we've studied, this opens a door to understanding- and maybe
curing, a wide range of diseases," says professor Dimitrios Stamou.Stamou heads a multidisciplinary team of scientists at the Nanoscience Center
and Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen who published their
discovery in the scientific journal Journal of the American Chemical Society.Switch contradicts previous understanding
The discovery of the enzymatic ignition key contradicts previous ideas of how
cells control the function of enzymes such as the fat eating lipase used in the
current study.Researchers used to think that these enzymes work continuously at varying
levels of efficiency. But in fact they are quite lazy. Very much like construc-
tion workers they work at a fixed efficiency for a given amount of time (working
hours), and then they rest. And that's good news for enzyme designers.Tripping their newfound switch resulted in tripling the working hours of
lipase enzymes, from 15 percent of the time to 45 percent by the Copenhagen
team.Function follows form
In enzymes, function is decided by the shape of the molecule. So making them
more efficient would have required a major reconstruction. In some cases so
difficult that it is on the order of transforming a handsaw into a chainsaw,
says the chemist, Assistant Professor Nikos Hatzakis, who was deeply involved
in the scrutiny of the enzymes."Changing the fundamental shape of a tool is always difficult. Whether it's
saw or an enzyme. But working longer hours with the same tool is infinitely
easier. What we've achieved, is to make enzymes work longer hours" explains
Hatzakis.Scrutiny on the Nanoscale
Observing that enzymes even have an on-off switch may sound easy, but first
the Bio Nano- team had to devise a way to study individual enzyme molecules.
These are so small, that there are trillions in just a drop of water. So measur-
ing the work of only one enzyme could be compared to looking down from the moon
to detect each time a carpenter in a building in Copenhagen swings his hammer.Light-emitting fat
To perform their studies the researchers chose a fat degrading lipase enzyme
model system in collaboration with Danish industrial enzyme producer Novozymes. They used "fat" that would emit light each time the enzyme took a bite. This
way they could monitor each and every catalytic cycle or single movement of
work. To ensure realism the enzymes were placed on an artificial cell wall. An
"in vivo like membrane system," says Stamou."Natural enzymes live in cells. Looking at them in a non native environment,
would tell us as much as looking at a carpenter working in outer space wearing
a space suit would tell us about builders," explains Dimitrios Stamou and con-
cludes:"Now that we have understood how to switch enzymes on and off we could use
this knowledge in the future both for curing diseases but also to design novel
enzymes for industrial applications."The research was supported by the Danish Research Councils and the Lundbeck
foundation.

Christ's death of the cross disproves any Issue of Universal Sovereignty
by yadda yadda 2 injohn 15:13 "greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.".
romans 5:8 "but god demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, christ died for us.".
since jesus was the perfect reflection of his heavenly father, these scriptures above show that if jehovah was able, he would have given up his own life for the human race.

The idea isn't that God is all love or loved everything about people
(neither do I) or always wanted to be reconciled with people. I don't know
that He needed to or not to want a reconciliation with people (or that be-
cause some people love their pets that all people have to be shown to love
all animals for it to be possible.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_manAre the suicide bombers from 9/11 also committin gthe greatest act of love
or just idiots? The prerogative is different with God (it's all His to do what He wants with)
and people (it isn't) something like the prerogative of people over animals.
(Not only don't all people love all animals, but some of us find some
delicious.) People killing people, all without God's prerogative, possibly be-
lieving in a possible God but without proof of God, are killing arbitrarilly
without the prerogative so by interpersonal ethics are murderers. -

Another Facepalm - "Higher Education Wastes Valuable Youth Years"
by God_Delusion inhi guys,.
if you've been following my posts on here, you'll know that i've recently been fascinated by the april 15th 2008 study edition of the watchtower magazine - namely the 'repudiate valueless things' article.. here are my previous posts on this masterpiece of watchtower propaganda:.
http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/beliefs/230616/1/going-beyond-what-is-written-in-the-biblehttp://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/bible/230643/1/how-could-i-have-not-realise-i-was-in-a-cult-for-all-that-timeif there were awards for the most in-your-face brainwashing, this article must surely be up there.. anyway, in the 'repudiate valueless things' article, the watchtower society decided to add their bit on higher education.

Time spent at college is time not spent taking GB brochures door to door and
collecting money for the GB.Colleges have libraries where you can research special claims you've heard or
read.Colleges have career guidance counselors who neglect to tell you the end is
nigh and instead give you an informed and realistic idea of how much schooling
you need for what jobs and what salaries to expect from them, etc.College history courses don't warn that events since 1914 indicate the devil
has been turned loose since then. They don't note the achievements, special
prediction abilities, or support for distinctive teachings that prove the JWs
presidents/GB are God's special spokespeople of a literal 144,000.Even comparative religion courses may make little or nothing of them, even in
the section about Abrahamic religion. The teacher may not have researched it
enough to field questions about it more than offhandedly. In contradiction to
various GB teachings, they teach the actual history of Abrahamic religions.College movie classes focus on various notable film makers and ignore
Russell's slide show/phonograph presentation.Colleges have literature classes that don't include Watchtower books in the
curriculum.Colleges have sociology classes that don't teach the evils of the worldliness
of birthday parties and everybody who isn't one of the JWs. They teach that
there's a long history of harm due to bigotry about women and LGBT people.Colleges have science classes that teach evolution, not intelligent design.
Colleges have medical courses that fail to teach that the best evidence shows
you should always refuse the medical use of blood/major blood products.Colleges are mostly comprised of non-JWs. JWs there may form relationships
with people who draw them from the JWs. -

I think Andy was more the private type and Ernie more the gregarious type.
More than that I can't say. There are some people that don't get the social ex-
perience they want from you whichever of those you are; Ethal Merman might have
had rude things to say about Ernie. But I think Andy and Ernie were both basic-
ally nice people. -

Spider Version of Bigfoot Emerges from Caves in the Pacific Northwest
ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) — The forests of the coastal regions from Cali-
fornia to British Columbia are renowned for their unique and ancient animals and
plants, such as coast redwoods, tailed frogs, mountain beavers and the legendary
Bigfoot (also known as Sasquatch). Whereas Bigfoot is probably just fiction, a
huge, newly discovered spider is very real. Trogloraptor (or "cave robber") is
named for its cave home and spectacular, elongate claws. It is a spider so evo-
lutionarily special that it represents not only a new genus and species, but
also a new family (Trogloraptoridae). Even for the species-rich insects and
arachnids, to discover a new, previously unknown family is an historic moment.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A team of citizen scientists from the Western Cave Conservancy and arachnolo-
gists from the California Academy of Sciences found these spiders living in
caves in southwest Oregon. Colleagues from San Diego State University found
more in old-growth redwood forests. Charles Griswold, Curator of Arachnology,
Joel Ledford, postdoctoral researcher, and Tracy Audisio, graduate student, all
at the California Academy of Sciences, collected, analyzed, and described the
new family. Audisio's participation was supported by the Harriet Exline Frizzell
Memorial Fund and by the Summer Systematics Institute at the Academy, which is
funded by the National Science Foundation.Trogloraptor hangs beneath rudimentary webs on cave ceilings. It is about
four centimeters wide when its legs are extended--larger than the size of a
half-dollar coin. Their extraordinary, raptorial claws suggest that they are
fierce, specialized predators, but their prey and attack behavior remain un-
known. The anatomy of Trogloraptor forces arachnologists to revise their understand-
ing of spider evolution. Strong evidence suggests that Trogloraptor is a close
relative of goblin spiders, but Trogloraptor possesses a mosaic of ancient, wide
spread features and evolutionary novelties. The true distribution of Trogloraptor remains unknown: that such a relatively
large, peculiar animal could elude discovery until 2012 suggests that more may
be lurking in the forests and caves of western North America.
