I went back and read the OP again. When I advised to yell at the old guy, I thought that this was an ongoing problem with him. If this is the first time he's done this, then you can politely tell him that you don't like to be touched by him. If you've already walked away from him for touching you, then there is no polite way to go about it.

A polite way to ask someone to keep their hands to themselves...
by White Dove inwhat's a polite way to ask a man to keep his hands to himself while conversing in a group with you?.
this neighbor of mine and i were sitting in chairs on the deck with other people.. he always touched me whenever he said anything to me or i said anything to him.. it was as if he was using touch like an antenna to send and receive signals.. i didn't know what to do, so instead of risking embarrassment for us both, i did nothing but stand up and step away.. i stepped away after he attempted to caress my hamstrings on one leg.. *shudder*.
wonder why 60+ year old men think that a woman being nice to him means she's hot for him.. also wonders why it's only the smoking, beer guzzling, scrawny, bony, and smelly old men who do that.. .

Politeness is not called for in this situation. A loud, "Stop that!" or "Don't touch me!" would be appropriate. Or better yet, remove his hand, and then walk away.

Now this week, 'Sister A' is calling me everyday and asking to meet me. Sister A is a kind, caring person and I have always enjoyed the times spent with her but she is also a fanatic JW. I have seen her shunning those don't give their best to Jehovah. So I figure the very reason she is contacting me now is to 'put me back on the right track'. I am trying to find the best answer to give her to stop pestering me without offending her.
Sorry, dearie, but the way you describe Sister A, she's going to be offended no matter what you say unles you're back at the kh and out in service. Just say, "I'm too busy", "There is no covenint time to meet you", "I'll call you when I have time". Be polite but firm.

If you are able, please continue to do this type of work. This interview was entertaining, informative and professional. It will literally save lives. I'm not a Bible scholar or believer, but it's amazing how similar my ideas have been throughout the years to what your guest had to say. The relationship of Ruth and Naomi was a theme in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" that was used to describe a relationship between the two main characters who were female. Also the description of what kind of fruit is born from beliefs about homosexuality is something I've always instinctively realized. Yet I can see how this interview may change the minds of more than a few conservative Christians. Good job!

Did therapy help you?
by gutted ini am considering going to a therapist.
even though i believe i have gotten better and made some progress (it has been roughly a year since i stopped attending meetings, doing anything jw-wise), i still have a lot of negative self-talk which is hard to overcome, especially during off days like today.. i find the hardest things for me is low self-esteem and social interactions/anxiety.
i'm sure some of you can sympathsize, and though i am not fully blaming my issues soley to my jw upbring (born-in) i know it compounded those issues.. .

Next to getting out of the cult and meeting my dear husband, therapy was the best thing that ever happened to me!

Your View of Holidays and Their Origins
by headisspinning ini am very curious about something... for those of you who have left the organization but still follow the bible and consider yourself christian... what holidays and celebrations have you embraced?.
how do you rationalize celebrating despite your knowledge of 'pagan' origins?.
i was born and raised a jw so it would seem really strange for me to start celebrating christmas or hallowe'en or easter - maybe mother's or father's day wouldn't be such a stretch - but i would really like to hear your thoughts and the conclusions you've come to.. but i have to say i never got a satisfying answer as to why jws aren't allowed to celebrate birthdays - the explanation that it promotes greed or selfishness or that the only record in the bible of birthday celebrations involved murder - none of these really cut it for me.. thanks - his .

In a practical sense, holidays are times set aside for celebration with friends and family, and there's nothing wrong with that. Holidays are also times when people are more apt to be generous to others, and there's nothing wrong with that. If you're going to worry about "Pagan origins" of things, you better cease and desist from many things like:
the names of the days of the week and months of the year (named after gods)
the use of lipstick (berry colored lips used to symbolize a prostitute's willingnss to perform ora sex)
the exhange of wedding rings, the bride wearing a white gown, going on a honeymoon
etc., etc., etc

Hello
by Chariklo ini am new to this site, just finding my way around.. i've been studying with jw's for about 15 months.
i'm an unbaptised publisher, and until recently never missed a meeting, have been out "on the service" quite a lot.
i've been having difficulties with one of the jw's studying with me and something happened which was just unacceptable.
