I went to the Watchtower Study with the "Selma and Steve" article today, and....
by cedars inno, i didn't really - but i'm anxious to hear from anyone who did!!.
what happened after the paragraph was read?
did anyone try to denounce abusing one's spouse under any circumstances, or were most answers supportive of the "advice" given to selma, i.e.

When I was in, I remember a ministerial servant lost his privileges and got a public reproof for having hit his wife. His wife was even a non-witness at the time.
BIG deal...it's just the Watch Tower once more treating crime as sin.

The story sounds like BS to me. I don't like that organization. And I know publishers "do their own thing" alot. But I didn't know of any parents that let their child date at 16. Let alone to a person outside the organization, and then white wash it by having the teenager get baptized.
Wha, maybe the guy is 18 or over. The jw guy that I married was 24 when he pursued me at 16. There was another couple in our hall that had similar circumstances.

Zid, when a YT video is disabled, just double click on the screen, and it will come up. The Watch Tower wasn't mentioned in either video. But if the law is going after the GIANT, powerful Catholic Church, I don't see why it wouldn't go after a small potatoes group like the Watch Tower.

I think there is a difference between mistaken facts and erroneously held religious convictions. There is no emotion involved in what the capital of Canada is, but there is usually deep emotional connection with spirituality, even when doctrine is blatantly incorrect.

Please read Combatting Cult Mind Control by Steven Hassan asap. Here is a lnk to his website: http://www.freedomofmind.com/
I was also 16 when I met my jw boyfriend and converted to marry him, which I did by 17. It was a nightmare marriage where I was so seriously abused and my life threatened that he was twice forcibly committed to mental institutions. Watch Tower doctrine dictates that remarriage is impossible unless one spouse can prove adultery against the other or if there is a confesson. I was badgered by the elders to remain in the marriage and given the choice of either stalking the man who was threatening to kill me or excepting the fact that he would stalk me.
Unfortunately my family were also jws, and I was badgered by my own mother, and I made what was probably a false confession of adultery* just to keep my ex-husband from having one more second of influence over my life. In doing so, I was df'd and lost my home, most of my possessions, and my family.
The Watch Tower truly is a cult, and even their recent literature encourages women to stay in abusive marriages. See the 2/15/12 Watchtower that will be studied this coming Sunday. Do whatever it takes to get your niece out, but do it correctly. Good luck!
*This was more than 20 years ago, and I'm not positive when I started dating again.

me: sweetheart, i love you so much.

Her: That's crazy. I would tell her to leave and then I would leave you. Who would be that stupid to give advice to stay with an abusive husband? There is no excuse to stay with someone who hits
you.
How I wish the Watchtower didn't insist on me staying with an abusive jw husband who was threatening to kill me. I refused and lost my home, most of my possessions, and my family. Too bad I couldn't tell your wife my story.
