@Ynot - thanks for the response. Which branches were sold in South America? I had friends that worked building the branch in Peru.

Why the Numbers Keep Increasing
by Georgiegirl inhave you ever read that riddle that asks if you would rather have a million dollars or a penny doubled every day for 30 days?
it shows how the penny eventually adds up over $5 million dollars in the course of month.. i think that's what's happening with the wtbs - it's not (obviously!!!
) holy spirit or anything other than simple incremental increase.

So...
"During the past year, the Governing Body analyzed the possibility of simplifying the administrative work carried out in smaller branches throughout the world. After analyzing the matter with the committees of the six branches in Central America, the Governing Body has determined to centralize the supervision of the Kingdom work carried out in those countries. This will be implemented in the coming months, and it will be the branch in Mexico that will be in charge of supervising the work in these territories. The date has not yet been fixed for this adjustment to come into effect, but you can rest assured things will be done in an orderly manner. Through official correspondence, the branch of Mexico will keep the bodies of elders and the congregations informed, as more information becomes available."
Moving supervison to Mexico, no mention of closing down and selling the offices is how I read it. Look, I'd be thrilled if it happened, too but I don't want to get all excited and draw conclusions and make assumptions and ruin my credibility.

Um..what?
Anyway - that was a serious question. Are they merely moving the oversight to Mexico or actually shutting down and selling the physical branches? I don't want to make an assumption and then we all go running off with the news and be really wrong. I have people that this news will seriously affect.

Ok, I'm confused. I read the English translation and it doesn't say that they are closing down or selling the Central American Branches - just that the overall administration is moving to Mexico (which, as someone pointed out, is really not a brilliant idea - I know! Let's pick the most unstable, violent, drug infested country in all of Central America and put the branch THERE (rolls eyes)). Anyway. For those of you that read Spanish, did I miss the part where they are closing down and selling these branches???? Or are we all just making assumptions?

Welcome! I'd love to chat with you as I have a similar background (die-hard JWs, 3rd generation) and we are only a few years apart in age. I am in the process of narrowing down doctoral programs with the goal of eventually finding a small liberal arts college and teaching. I'm confused a bit about:
"I had my bachelor’s degree by 21, my master’s degree by 22, and my PhD by 25. For the past 15 years, I have been a university professor."
How did you manage to do a master's (usually 2 years) in 1 year and a PhD (usually 5-7 years) in 3 years? If I can cut out anytime, I'd be thrilled since I am not as young as I once was!!! I've never heard of it being done so quickly - are you in the States? What is your degree specialty?
Be afraid - be very afraid (grins). Now that I know there's a professor on board, I may have to pester you with questions.

Uh Oh!!! The elders are coming!!!
by Blue Grass inwell after fading and keeping a low key i think the elders are finally going to get to me.
in 2007 i moved to another city but quickly moved back home about two months later.
the whole time everyone from my old congregation has been thinking i've been in another city.

Ok, are you serious right now? Perhaps you should go back and read some of your "sage" advice on other threads. I'm with White Dove on this one - based on your vitriolic and offensive posts, it seems a bit odd you should be worried about this, much less asking for advice.

Setting up trust any suggestions on how to handle our JW daughter?
by Bonnie_Clyde inwe set up a trust a few years ago but have an appointment with our attorney later this month to make sure it is current and make any changes necessary.
originally we had our daughter and our two sons to share equally.
now i feel that it should not be equal.

I would also wonder how much of it would go back to the organization in the form of a large donation.
As far as asking her how she wants to handle it - IF she started speaking to you, would you always wonder if she was having a relationship with you out of love or out of eagerness for her inheritance?
My suggestion? Leave her a little bit (maybe enough for a vacation) and then take the rest of it and set up a scholarship fund in her name at a local university for a needy student or 2. Depending on how much, your lawyer can structure it so its a renewable scholarship. You can't imagine how helpful my grants and scholarships have been - truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Pedophiles in your congregation??
by ziddina ini'm listening to the "six screens of the watchtower" broadcast from october 25, 2008 [yeah, i know, i'm waaay behind...], discussing pedophilia... that broadcast caused me to look up the current status of 'pedophilia notification' in the u.s.a..... rebel8 posted a link sometime back that gave locations of pedophiles in one's (u.s.a.) neighborhood... that portion of the link is, unfortunately, not working right now.... i decided to check out my [old] site, http://www.nsopw.gov/core/offendersearchcriteria.aspx to see if it still functioned the same way.... again, unfortunately, that site is also no longer giving out maps of one's area.... but, as pointed out in rebel8's posted link, pedophiles tend to move around.
this was also mentioned in the six screens broadcast by a lady named "lilly".... the new versions of both sites simply allow one to input the name of someone suspected to be a pedophile... not as effective, imo, but perhaps the cost of updating the maps due to pedophiles' high mobility became prohibitive.. so, here's my suggestion... using the 'name' search function, check out every name in .
your congregation, starting with the elders!!!.

Z - re that site you just found - exactly. Note that all states are required to report - but there are variations - like what triggers a call, etc.

Hey Z.
No I don't, sorry. I'm sure I can find one but my dinner date just arrived (yay!). This site lists registries by state, however: http://www.sexualoffenders.com/
The AWA was an attempt by Congress to impose federal reporting standards on the states and to create a national registry instead of 50 scattered state registries. Now that the national registry is created, in theory, a sexual offender should not be able to move from state to state (as was the case before). However, the ADA tried to do to much. I would be very surprised if the Supreme Court allows it to stand. It also makes it easier to prosecute a sex offender under federal law instead of state law.
