This sort of thing happens all the time. It would appear that this type of scenario happened with 1975 expectations, with some COs, DOs, and elders being much stronger in their opinions about the significance of the year than were others.

Agreed jwfacts. This is one of the main red flags to identify a cult.

i strolled over to the "book search" computer, and typed in "jehovahs witnesses".. i got 84 hits !!!!!
a few repeats, but at least 60 hits were different book titles, all against the watchtower society.
this was very impressive!!

You don't sound like a dick at all. The reason I suggested the information as therapy approach is that you mentioned a fear that the end is near. Something that helped me to get over that fear was learning that nearly all cultures and civilizations through history have had the same fear to a greater or lesser degree. Psychology offers explanations for this not at all unique phenomenon. Sorry if that doesn't help. I'm sure you'll find something here from someone that will.

Even though you have not associated with the Witnesses for some time, their programming lies deep within you. You need to deprogram yourself. The best way to do this is to expose yourself to new information, understanding of course that all information should be examined carefully and weighed against logic and real-life experience. This may take considerable time and effort. You will find JWD to be a support in your struggle. I recently described this board as I have experienced it as follows:

i'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but on pages 28-29 of the april 15, 2007 watchtower study on let the congregation be built up, they seem to be trying to justify the notion that a person cannot be 'saved' if they leave the organization, even if they have just cause:.
paragraph 15 reads" in modern times, some have ceased associating with the local congregation, feeling that they will serve god on their own.
they may say that it is because their feelings were hurt, they think a wrong is not being corrected, or they cannot accept some teaching.

For any apostates interested in starting their own group(that is the true agenda of all apostates) the society has explained the one all-important element that will legitimize said group. Give a bunch of guys the title of Elder. Give another bunch of guys the title of Ministerial Servant. Now you're ready to open shop!

this is i guess geared more toward bethelites or those in the know.
in the endless sunday meetings i was always facinated by the photographs and pictures in the books and magazines.
is there a large photo studio at bethel were the pictures are taken?
