Are hispanic Witnesses more submissive?
by Hiddenwindow inin my experience spanish speaking brothers adopt a more submissive approach toward the society.
many of these brothers consult the elders on minor personal matters that they should be deciding for themselves.
i know this is common among witnesses in general, however, i think brothers from spanish speaking congregations take it to the extreme.

The History of Apocalyptic Movements
by nvrgnbk ini encountered this information a few years back and it affected me deeply as i was struggling to wake up from the apocalyptic movement known as jehovah's witnesses.. it was prepared and presented by jim moyers , an ex-adventist.. it's lengthy.. imo, it's essential reading for any current doubting jw's or anyone considering joining their ranks.. note the comments about william miller, an adventist that had a huge impact on the father of jwism and the bible students, c.t.
russell.
enjoy!.

As the culture is more focused on rank, it's seen as respectful to defer to authority figures, even in personal matters as the OP noted.
The poor education many received also contributes to the tendency.

Spirit(s)
by Narkissos inno, not that kind --> .
i'm thinking about the notion of "spirit" as used in the bible, ancient and medieval religion as well as "superstition"... that which is common to "angels," "demons," "ghosts," "souls," the "holy spirit/ghost" -- and even "god," at least according to the fourth gospel; that which underlies such widely different concepts as "spirituality," "spiritualism" or "spiritism".. it seems to me that by stepping into "modernity" we have shifted from a worldview in which the notion of "spirit" was taken for granted and ubiquitous to another in which it is no longer understood.
the johannine sentence "god is spirit" sounds like explaining obscura per obscuriora.

I don't think the average 21st-century Westerner has a better personal grasp of "reality" just because s/he uses the word "epilepsy" instead of "evil spirit".
Maybe just a little better?

To all those that are seriously thinking about going back to JWism...
by nvrgnbk inmaybe you should.. apparently the reasons some had for leaving had nothing to do with truth or reality or what's factual.. some left because they got discouraged or were offended or felt slighted.. if that's why you left- an unkind word, not being invited to some social function, nepotism in the hierarchy, being overlooked for privileges, annoying personalities, etc.- you're in a very unsettled place.. you'll soon discover that people that aren't jehovah's witnesses can be unkind, lack hospitality, show favortism, and be obnoxious.. then what?.
you'll go crawling back?.
if on the other hand you left because you realize that the extraordinary claims made by the religion are completely without support, you may occasionally miss friends and family lost and reminisce about some random happy memories experienced but most likely never feel tempted to return.. the jw religion, like most any other religion, is full of people that want to be told what to do and what to think.. it's easier that way.. thinking can be exhausting.

You're a caring and sincere person, Mr. Flipper.
You go out of your way to show concern for others.
As for injustices or perceived injustices suffered, couldn't the same be said about involvement in any human organization?
Abuse of power and incompetent leadership are not ills unique to JWism.
What hurt so bad about it coming from the JW experience is that it was supposed to be a refuge from a cold and heartless world, not a source of more anxiety.
I hope you don't interpret any of the content of this thread as an attempt to minimize any of suffering that has occurred as a result of being involved with the JW cult.
