Thanks...I like to know what is going on without actually going or probing my mom with a lot of questions. Every time I do it just makers her think I am going to go back, and breaks her heart every time she realizes that I am a curious observer, no longer a devote witness.

has anyone seen this?
What I always like about the Mormoms was that they only sent young, good looking boys to the doors....yummy!
in the late 1960s, i became a jw.
there was a sense of intellectual freedom and more openness to discuss various spiritual and even some social topics.
there was reliance on watch tower literature as an authority, but still the soiciety seem to confine its concerns and left the rest up to individual jws to decide.

My whole experience with the JWs was that we should not read apostate literature, but it is interesting how things really changed when the internet became popular. One really should take what they read with a grain of salt online, but the JWs seem to have gone overboard.

Well, look at it this way. Conjugal visits, and he will never get out, so she doesn't have to have to submit to him on every little decision.

When my brother and sisters were little, my mother used to make picture books for them out of pictures from the Paradise and other colorful brochures. She also had us mark down in a notebook how many times we heard Jehovah, Jesus or another keyword for that meeting used. It worked with most of us. But she would always take us out back in the library for a little bit when needed..because kids just usually cannot sit that still very long...awake anyway.
One time my brother sang the theme to the Batman song during the prayer. hehee!

I have emailed the Boston Globe and the New York Times...no response yet. I just asked if they could confirm it officially in their newspapers so that we have some US newspaper confirmation; and more importantly, something IN PRINT!!!! Many do not trust anything they read on the internet, especially many witnesses I know.

The race thing: there are imperfect people in all religions. It makes me especially sick to hear of it in the JWs because I was raised that it didn't matter what race you were. But I know plently of JWs and nonJWs that do not feel that way.
As far as not shunning the DFd ones at the funeral, maybe they were just trying to be kind. That does happen every once in a while.
My father was not a witness, but my mom is. He had no eulogy. Just a funeral talk by a local elder. It was awful. My poor mother did not realize until after the funeral that it was a mistake to not have a real eulogy. She was just overwhelmed, and was on automatic pilot. The elders should have asked about an eulogy in addition to the funeral talk.

My first gut response was to write that restricting one religion is restricting ALL religion.
However, I too have to consider the current situation in the world and this country. While I don't like the idea of people having to register as a member of a religion with any government, I can see why this Ohio town passed the law. The feel the need to protect their citizens.
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, if they have never rejected a permit it seems that the government sincerely is just trying to make sure that all these solictors are legit. And do they run them through for criminal background? When I sold insurance and later worked for a credit card company I was fingerprinted and a background check was performed. I had no problem with that.
But the idea of any government compiling a list of people based on religious affiliation concerns me. I wonder if this is just a basic permit that does not specify what the door to door purpose is. If so, then it is no big deal to me. But if not, ehhh....this makes me nervous.
It will be extremely interesting to see how this plays out.
