  A million study the Bible in UK!

  there is a big push on at the moment in uk for an 'introduction to christianity' called the alpha course.

  the course has been advertised widely and claims to have attracted over a million people to look into the meaning of life and what christianity has to offer.

The course has been advertised widely and claims to have attracted over a million people to look into the meaning of life and what Christianity has to offer. It is ran at many churches and appears to be non-dominational.
  
  Compare that with the number of Bible studies being conducted by the Witnesses in UK - currently just under 50,000 then take out 'family' studies and my guess would be you end with no more than 10,000.
  
  So the Witnesses' claim to be the only ones teaching the Bible today certainly doesn't stand up.

  How does the WT explain "The Truth will Set You Free???"

  now that i'm really free with truth.

  i was wondering how the wt explains this scripture, since their members are in bondage.

  i was told by the lady that studied with me that jw are free from superstitions, etc.

  Interesting topic.
  
  One of the last elders who visited me to encourage me to come back to the meetings cited that scripture. So I said ?let?s have a look at it in the Bible?.
  
  I reasoned that the reality is that Jesus was speaking to people who had the ?truth? at the time. They were God?s people, practiced the law, they were not sexually immoral or particularly superstitious. ?Surely,? I said, ?Jesus was talking about religious freedom, freedom from all the petty rules and regulations that the Jewish system had heaped upon the ordinary people.? I don?t think the point that the Witnesses are enslaved to a similar overbearing religious system sunk in.

  the ngo issue seems to be playing well (or should we say unwell) for the borg right now, and we've been able to meet more new posters on jwd.

  no longer lurkers, they're beginning to see the truth about "the troof".

  I have always dected a fear of listening to the R&F by those high up in the organisation.
  For example:
  Most public talks are boring, the standard of speakers can be terrible.

  Watchtower studies are either trival and insulting to the intelligence or unintelligible, e.g. those on prophecies
  
  The field ministry is a waste of time - people are flocking into the organisation.

  Add me to the list for what it is worth 10 years.

  However, I always believed Jesus words "whoever may desire to become great amoung you, should be Your Servant". I honestly believe the majority of former and present elders felt/feel that way.

  The problem with the Watchtower structure is that the 'hardliners" rise to the top. These are the ones who then effectively become the Society's law enforcers. I have been in quite a few congregations, and have never come across a congregation where that wasn't true.

  Lots of interesting comments. I agree with the comments about pedophiles are out of line, I personally see no connection with the picture and such comments/thoughts. But let's get this thread back on course.

  What I get from the picture is not that the little boy is going to get his Sunday best dirty but that he is in danger of drowning; losing his life! The whole thrust of Watchtower doctirne is if you don't do what we say, you will die at Armagedon.

  However, the little kid is just that; a little kid. You have to realise that three year olds can drown in just a few inches of water. If he falls in and drowns that would a terrible accident, but no one in their right mind would say "it was his fault that he died because he didn't listen to the warnings of his parents". The picture is a very poor effort at trying to illustrate the point the Watchtower is making.

  The song you are thinking of was something like "Our Paradise, Present and Future". Words "gracious Jehovah, God we thank you for our spiritual paradise", ........ "by study, pray and meeting we are aided to be wise", etc.

  I remember when the new songs came out, learning to play a few of them on guitar. But they had awful melodies and a chord change for every note! Give me Beatle songs with only three or four chords for the whole song any day!

  Now is it just me, but isn't the picture of the little boy trying to rescue his ball from out of a pond just a little weird? Firstly, what parent dresses their kids now days in a bow tie, shorts, black socks and shoes? Secondly, if that were my kid and he drowned, then I personally would be totally guilt ridden for the rest of my life. Yes, we all warn our kids about dangers, including not going by deep waters. But heck, the lad looks about 3 years old; could he possibly be held responsible for his actions of "igorning the warnings?"

  Just another example of WTB&TS nonsensical reasoning!

  I remember a few old song books! Not sure if I can remember any of the old songs that were removed as being too influenced by Christendom.

  Today's song are much more in line with what the Soicety expects; tow the line, do what you are told, don't ask any questions.

  The Greek word por.nei?.a, translated "fornication," has a fairly broad meaning. It relates to sexual relations involving persons not married to each other and focuses on the misuse of sexual organs.
  Porneia includes such acts as oral sex, anal sex, and masturbating another person?conduct commonly associated with houses of prostitution.
  People who think that such acts are not "fornication" are fooling themselves and have fallen victim to one of Satan?s snares. (2 Timothy 2:26)

  There is another problem here. The text is quite clear in that it is talking about oral, anal and other sexual practices engaged in by unmarried couples. However, the average R&F member will pick this up as a subliminal message that it also includes married couples. So the confusion, or control which ever way you look at it, goes on.
