No they don't. I grew up a witness and never celebrated my parents birthdays, my brothers and sisters birthdays and later on my kids birthdays.
Birthdays are still a thing I am not quite comfortable with even with my worldly friends and work mates. Old habits die hard.

jws celebrate birthdays?!
by dobbie ini was speaking to a friend last night, trying to explain why i don't go to meetings etc,(waste of time though she just can't seem to understand my point whatever i say), anyway she said as long as i don't d'a myself she can still speak to me.
she said they only d'f you if you commit a gross sin.
i refuted this saying if they knew i didn't agree with some of the teachings, sent a fathers day card etc and you weren't sorry they'd get rid of you.

undercover - hey I remember those as well.
You have to admit though, generalluy, they were pretty well organised. I don't think they could do the same today - brothers and sisters just don't have the same commitment as the old timers did. These were people who would get up at 5am and work in kitchens till 11pm! -

I consider myself to be a liberal Christian, i.e. someone who can relate to the rather radical teaching of Christ. However, I don't have a religion, after all Jesus was a Jew but did not exactly see eye to eye with its practioners.

We regularly went in field ministry in India with temperatures of over 40 degrees C (what's that 108 degrees F?).
The trick to survive in the heat is to take things very slow (the old pioneer walk) stop regularly to drink and don't stay out in the sun too long.
PS - we used to wear a collar and tie even in such heat, fortunately, no suit jackets except for the memorial when we made a spcial effort and just melted. -

When you have waited for "the end" for so long, any piece of bad news is seen as sign that Armageddon is just round the corner.
Many of us here lived through the cold war, a situation that could have resulted in worldwide nuclear destruction.
The situation in the middle east, whilst serious is not in the same league as the cold war with regard to potential destruction. What has changed is that terrorism (i.e. the random killing of just a few people at specific targets) claims real lives in our countries, unlike the cold war that at the end of the day did not take civilians lives in Europe or the USA.

Were YOU Depressed When You Were A Witness?
by minimus ini've seen soooo many witnesses taking meds or alcohol because of unhappiness and depression.
i know of one woman who regularly gos to her shrink and is the most depressed person that i know of.
personally, i believe it's because a jw can never do enough to satisfy god or the elders....what do you think?
-

No, not when I was in. I suppose like many the routine and companionship provides a prop that is quite comforting. When I stepped down as an elder and began my exit, that's when am sure I suffered form mild depression.
It's all better now, thankfully.

The Truth About Matt 24 & Revelations
by kwr ini was doing some reading and came across the fact that matt 24 was fulfilled in 70 ad.
my thinking on these passages in the bible is that the destruction of the temple and the murder of 600,000+ jews by the romans was a fulfillment of those prophecies.
jesus was the messiah to the jews and that was his purpose.

Strange post. Don't quite understand how you can come to that conclusion.

How would the Governing Body treat Jesus if he were on earth today?
by unbrainwashed in.
they would criticize him for "independent thinking" and eventually disfellowship him for apostasy for not going along with their religious system and doctrines, don't you think?.
oh wait...that's kind of like what the sanhedrin did to him 2,000 years ago..

Totally agree with all of you!!!!!
the JW religion is not geared up to welcome individuals who in any way do not comform to their sterotype. Jesus would be seen as a nice guy but far too radical.

DC in Ireland: Warning about groups of bros who want to modernise the WT
by truthseeker in.
i just heard this from someone who attended a district convention in ireland.. the brother told me that the speaker said that there were brothers forming groups to try and modernise the watchtower society.
has anyone heard anything like this in the usa?
-

The structure of the Society is such that it is well insulated from pressure to modernise.
This has been seen over again over many years.
The biggest change of the past 10 years (and particularly the last 5 years) has been the expotential growth of the internet. This will continue to inform people to the point that the Society will be forced to change. - example totally incomprehensible changes to the blood stance (red blood fractions now allowed) - could this be anything to do with pressure from AJWRB.com

What if caffeine was banned for JWs?
by undercover ina post about caffeine and coffee in the "what if the wts banned alcohol" thread jogged my memory.... back in the 70s sometime (i can't remember if it was pre-75 or post-75) a rumor started circulating around our area that at the next convention the wts was going to add caffeine and caffeine products (coffee, coke, etc) to the list of banned substances (tobacco, blood).
of course, it never happened, but for a couple of months the rumors were hot and heavy.
the rumors were easily believed by a lot of the dubs because of the "up" effects caffeine can give you and besides, the mormons banned it, there had to be a reason.

Wouldn't be a problem for most of here - we're not JWs. Coffee - I can take it or leave it. Much rather give that up than a good wine or beer.
