I knew Ben Dykstra when he was in Adelaide. Was an exceptional guitarist if I remember rightly.

Elder Conversation: Why Reform Won't Happen
by metatron ini had a nice conversation with an elder recently and it illustrates why reform of the organization is nearly impossible.
this elder.
is very aware of how bad things are becoming in congregations and he worries about his retirement.

A very discerning post. I do believe that JWs are stuck in a hopeless rut that they cannot get out of.
A case in point; my parents were baptized in the early 1950s and came to believe that they would never die in this system of things. Now when I go to see them they openly talk about their own deaths. I am sure that this is typical amoungst the older rank and file.
However, the society continues to teach 'the end is just round the corner' doctrine.
Surley they cannot go on for ever with this line.

An Apostate Myth
by nicolaou inhaving read both of ray franz' books and more recently 'the gentile times reconsidered' by c. o jonsson you'd be forgiven for believing that losing the 607 b.c.e date for the destruction of jerusalem would end in disaster for the society.
sorry but i just don't think so.. i'm sure many of the long-time witnesses who know the history of the society would truly have problems but most of the dubs just don't care!
think about it, remember all those dubs you used to hang out with.

I agree with Little Toe in that we should not be mislead into think that those in Bethel are either theologians or spiritual giants. My opinion is that the JW thing has lost its way totally.
Personally, I do not think the GB has much room to manoeuvre over such doctrines as 607 BCE, 1914 or no blood - they simply at this point would not get away with it without a mass exodus. What they will do is continue to tinker with these doctrines, as they did with the 1914 generation'.

Losing close relatives in "armageddon"
by greendawn inwhile you were jws, when the wts was saying that in a soon to come armageddon all non jws were to be exterminated, that was hard to stomach by many especially concerning innocent children.
however did that make you feel very anxious about the killing of close non jw relatives, parents, brothers, children etc and their eternal loss?
did that make you work extra hard to bring them in?

A tip for faders / lurkers / doubters...
by sass_my_frass ini just worked out that a big turning point for me was reading george orwell!
he writes about people who stubbornly keep bludgeoning themselves with their pet cause; holding on to their beliefs in spite of the consequences to their life.
themes from 1984 come up here regularly; 'doublethink' - the ability to suppress a thought that contrasts to what is acceptable to the ruling authority by turning it over and just accepting that their version of the truth is the truth.

I loved 1984 too. The essence is that a good idea (all animals are equal) is gradually eroded (all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others) and eventually becomes despotic.
In many ways I love the JW message that all are equal in the sight of God but then what the system has degenerated into is not nice. Go to any District Assemble with Bethel big-wigs in attendance and try to get to see them. They hide away in the executive lounges and have bouncers on the doors to stop the proletariat getting to them - all brothers are equal but some are more equal than others!

CO discusses: Higher Education, Baptism Nullification, No Sense of Urgency
by doinmypart inhere are my notes from the biannual co visit.
the notes are from the co meeting with elders & ms 2006 service year outline.
the topics from wts are sense of urgency, higher education, independent thinking, marital arrg, invalid baptisms.. sense of urgency - concern among fds that some are losing their urgency, they don't believe we're in the last days.

Hey I love the bit about invalid baptism and quoting an article from 1960 and 1964. These guys forget/never have known the meaning of baptism and dedication and the fact that the baptism vows were significantly changed.
I don't go to any KH meetings now a days but I do go to circuit and district assemblies to support my wife who is still in. At our last Circuit Assembly the brother giving the baptism talk meantioned something to the effect that we (baptismed ones) had made the same declaration as the baptism candidates to the effect that we accepted the fact that by our baptism we associated as selves as one of Jehovah's Witness and would hence forth do the will of 'God's spirit directed organization'.
I whispered to my wife at that point that I had made no such vow and she was a little shocked that our dedications vows were not the same as the one made by new ones now.
Personally, I am quite happy with the vows I made as a 14 year old but no way would vow the vows they make today.

Over the years, I have noticed a large percentage of COs or their wives suffer from some form of depression.
I guess it goes with the job.

With Albert Schroeder gone, there is a disturbance in the force...
by truthseeker inwith prince albert in heaven at jesus' right hand, there is now a gap in the force among the governing body.. the new administration is now one man short.
who will be his replacement?
maybe that's why they appointed geoffrey jackson and the other dude to gb members - they knew schroeder was going soon, maybe barr will be next.. .

Personally, I think that the Society CANNOT change.
What I mean is that they cannot change the Christ's invisible return in 1914 doctrine - they would just end up looking like planks.
They cannot change (substantially) the blood doctrine - it would lead not only to lawsuits but huge a demoralization of the rank and file who for years have been under pressure from the medical establish over what they see is a matter of faith in God over faith in medicine.
They cannot change the Xmas and birthday ban - too much loss of face.
The things they can and have changed over the years are so minor they are unimportant. Things such as 3 day Circuit Assemblies becoming just 2 days, no Saturday night meeting during the CO's visit, minor changes to the Elders and Ministerial Servants arrangements.
I think these guys will continue to tinker and never get round to addressing the realy issues.
