  Yet another new guy...

  first, let me say it is scary posting here for me.

  What is hard is if you still have family in.

  I was an elder for years, had parts on assemblies, served in India for a while and had a model family. But then it all fell apart overnight.

  However, my wife still attends and is a very faithful and loyal Witness. I have always respected the beliefs of others, even when I was active so i am not going to pressurize her. It is hard sometime when you personally would like to move on, I have different views now but I don't want to anything that would get me disfellowshipped, even 5 years down the line from giving up attending.

  But if the not having access to the Internet is an attempt at control, then it is going to be futile and short lived. Mobile Internet access is already with us - you simply buy a device that you plug into your USB port on your laptop and away you go. Unles of course mobiles and mobile devices are banned in Bethel.

  I need advice on the current political situation in India

  my son is thinking of doing an exchange program at a university in india next spring.

  does anyone have reliable info to indicate whether or not it would be safe for an american young man to travel and live there for six months or so?.

  I lived and worked in New Delhi a while back and have traveled all over India, except to Kashmir, which probably isn't safe. I still visit regularly, in fact I was back just a couple of months ago.
  
  First, you have to understand that India is very different from the West. It is a developing country but there is still a lot of poverty and even the people that they would classify as middle class do not enjoy the same standard of living as we do.
  
  On the other hand, I have found living and traveling in India to be very safe. I never felt unsafe on the streets of Delhi, which is more than can be said of many Western cities - there are just too many people about for muggers to get away! Also, not too sure about the advice to avoid Muslims. All the Muslims I have met in India have been good honest people. Although there have been some problems, basically Indian Muslims have not been radicalized as in other places.
  
  I know that Microsoft and Oracle have invested heavily in India - in Hyderabad I think?
  
  You asked specifically about the political situation. India is the world's largest democracy. Currently the Congress party is in power and they are very pro-West. This is party of Sonia Gandhi but she was reluctant to take over as prime minster and so India has it's first Sikh prime minister, Manmohan Singh. He is a highly intelligent, well respected economist.
  
  Personally, I love India and would say go for it but you have to make up your own minds about the pros and cons / risks of living in a different culture.

  books like "anna karenina" or "the brothers karamazov"?

  Hey sass_my_frass, I read a suitable boy whilst I was traveling around India. It was so big that every time I finished a chapter I tore it out so the book got progressively less heavy to carry in my backpack! Agree - it wasn't really worth it - it just like some sort of India soap opera.

  every time we enter a new year, i think about how i wasn't supposed to make it this long.

  i really believed we wouldn't live past the year 2000, and armageddon would change everything.

  it almost strikes me as living on borrowed time, but then i remember that armageddon is a story, not a reality.

  i try to run at least 3 to 4 times a week in the winter and then get to running 6 days a week in the summer and get up to running over 50 miles in training.

  first off, i'm fine so don't go getting all worked up on my account.

  we've all heard the "6 months to live question" before.

  i'm just stretching it out a bit longer to 2 years.

  Excellent topic - because I guess we should all try to live our lives as if only a few months left to live, as none of us know what is round the corner. We might never get to do that trip we always wanted to do, look up old friends or just take things a little easier.
  
  The problem is that life, family commitments and other responsibilities get in the way of doing what we might really want.
  
  Me? I would spend the time traveling and getting my family to meet up with me in some far flung corner of the world. And then, perhaps my last year I would spend with people who could teach me transcendental meditation and the like, so I might be able to both cope and get some understanding of what this life is about.

  Thinking of giving it all up!

  i am sure this isn't a mid-life crisis i have done that and got out of the jws.

  .

  but i am seriously thinking of just leaving the west with its rat race, emphasis on money, senseless tv and media, cars, shopping malls, pre-packaged food, supermarkets, etc, etc, and moving to india to live in a small cottage near a beach somewhere.. anyone else got the urge to get out of the rat-race?.
