I can't disagree with that. I will, however, add that it is also the opposite of humility to insist that "all evidence is against" there being a Creator. For only a very proud person could refuse to acknowledge any and all evidence that now exists for the existence of God.

To have faith in God requires a willingness to believe in one greater than yourself. That shows humility. Humility is a virtue, is it not?

i just felt like typing today.. the sign of the times.. i was having a semi conversation with someone whos very close to me on this subject after the 911 tragedies.
apparently some congregations were talking about it being the worst thing that has ever happened, thus being a sign of the times.

In another thread you described your understandings of the New Testament as being those of a "Preterist." Would you please descibe what that means exactly? As I understand it, Preterists believe that when Jesus referred to the coming end of an age and to the time he would return to judge the world, he was referring solely to events which took place during Rome's initial siege and final destruction of Jerusalem (between the years AD 66 and 70).
I believe Preterists also believe that we will all experience the return of Christ in a personal way when we meet our Maker on Judgment Day. I have also heard that Preterists believe that the book of Revelation was written before the year AD 70 and that all of its prophetic content refered to events which took place before or during that year. And they say that the thousand year reign of Christ spoken of in Revelation refers symbolically to the many years of the Church age.
Are my present understandings about Preterism correct? If not, will you please correct them for me? And will you please tell us anything else that you feel is important to know, if we are to understand the basics of Preterism? For instance, if Christ is not returning to set all things right during a thousand year reign on earth, how will all things be set right? By the efforts of Christians? Or do Preterists believe things will probably never be much different than they are now?

questions from readers the conclusion that the flood occurred 1,656 years after adams creation rests on the ages in the genealogical list in genesis chapter 5. the bible there says how old each man was when he became father to the next.
Nearly all Old Testament scholars and Bible historians understand that the men who recorded the chronological history of Judah's kings contained in the Bible used what is now referred to as the "accession year system of reckoning" for counting the number of years of a king's rule. The way this system of counting years worked was that a king's first partial calendar year as king was not counted. Then his first full calendar year as king was counted as his "first" year. And finally his last partial year of rule was counted as his last year.
The reason Bible writers counted time in this way is so they could later simply add together all the "years" of rule credited to two or more successive kings and, by so doing, arrive at the actual total number of years which passed during the period of time in question. They knew that if they had counted partial years as full years, or never counted partial years at all, they would not later be able to accurately determine exactly how many years passed during the history of their nation by adding together all the "years" which their kings ruled. So, to avoid such a problem, Bible writers who recorded Judean history always utilized the "accession year system of reckoning" when they counted time.
With these things in mind it seems quite likely that the men who wrote the Bible, for the same reasons, would have employed this same system of reckoning when, in Genesis chapters 5 and 11, they counted and recorded the numbers of years in men's lives. questions questions im just wondering are modern day dating methods reliable i ask this because i was told there are different types of dating methods to test fossils etc for instance testing bones which using dating methods say 10 yrs ago are now classed unreliable i say this because i was told that historians dated human remains back to 20 million yrs i think and with a more modern technique it s now dated at only 5000 yrs i think so the question is can we trust todays modern dating methods or will they sometime in the near future be more accurate
