This is shocking news indeed. The charges relate to incidents in the 1970s. The former manager of the Bay City Rollers has been arrested as part of the same inquiry. Being arrested, even for something as horrible as child abuse, does not constitute guilt. There was a high profile case of a football team manager who was charged with child abuse which was alleged to have occurred in the 1980s when he was a careworker in a children's home. The case went to court and he was found not guilty on all counts.

Matthew Kelly's arrest is not linked to the recent Operation Ore arrests. I was reading about that operation which lead to 1300 arrests in Britain, including teachers, careworkers, surgeons and two MPs rumoured to be former government ministers. These are all relating to viewing child porn internet sites. It seems that a lot of people are viewing this material. There is a school of thought that veiwing child porn does not lead to or correlate with actually abusing children. Even if this idea is accepted (and seems stange to me - why would someone want to view it?) somewhere a child has been abused in order to produce the image.

This has lead me thinking - Is the problem far more widespread than we ever imagined? The popular image of a paedophile in the UK is the "dirty old man" or possibly the scoutmaster, not the teacher, police officer or social worker.

Or, Is the problem being blown up in the media and are there false accusations flying around?

I fear it is the former scenario.

we have had some pretty amasing classic comedy in britian over the years.. faulty towers, the office, alan partridge,ali g etc.mind you weve had some very crap sit-com 2.4 kids etc.. who does it better the brits or the yanks?.

It is difficult to compare UK / US humour. The culture gap is so wide. I must admit, some of the shows that have been mentioned as shining examples of brilliant UK humour by the US and Canadian posters (eg. Keeping Up Appearances), I would class as tedious in the extreme. I would take Frasier, South Park and even Friends over On the Buses, Carry On or Keeping Up Appearances any day.

Examples of excellent British comedy?

Has Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer's shows (Shooting Stars, Reeeves and Mortimer) made it over the pond yet? That makes me laugh, it draws strongly on Morecambe and Wise legacy. Ronnie Barker is a genius, The Two Ronnies still makes me laugh. There is an animated satirical series called 2DTV which is very funny. And The Royle Family is outstanding, great acting and writing.

Of course, if you think that Hyacinth Bucket is the pinnacle of comic genius, you willl probably disagree with my choices!

This list certainly covers doctrines that are unlikely to be dealt with in a doorstep sermon, but I would not say that they are not taught to potential converts.

THAT no one goes to heaven but 144,000 Jehovah's Witnesses, and your soul will be destroyed if you refuse their organization.

The quote links two valid but completely unrelated points. The 144000, little flock, annointed stuff is basic JW doctrine. Noone would become a JW without being aware of that. The issue of the non-JWs being bird food is not related to that doctrine.

As for the following:

THAT Armageddon and Christ's second coming were foretold to happen in 1874, 1914, 1925 and 1975 by this "non-prophet" organization.
THAT when Christ failed to show up in 1914 The Society claimed in later years that He had come invisibly--of course, and all Jehovah's Witnesses believe this today.
THAT Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob etc. were to be back on earth as perfect humans in 1925. The Society built a palacial home for them BUT when the patriarchs failed to show up, the President of the Society moved in.
I think you would be hard pressed to find any JWs that are aware of these facts, even old timers who lived through those times have "forgotten" that it happened.
This list is a good "crazy things that dubs teach" list, but it is not what it claims to be, i.e. a list of things you will not be told when you convert.

Mostly my posts are ignored, too, so its has rarely been an issue for me. When it happened, I was already getting sickened by some of the stuff I had seen here. I thought, it doesn't matter how carefully Simon and the moderaters work to keep this in check, some of the posters here are aggresive, homophobic and racist and moderating doesn't change the fact that that is what they are. I thought, I don't want to spend time in this place. Not being one for the dramatic YOU'VE ALL HURT MY FEELINGS, I AM LEAVING, BOO HOO kind of post, I just slipped away and sulked for a while..........

So I just did not post for a while. I was kind of hoping that someone would say, Hey, Where's Fe2O3Girl? HAHAHAHA then I woke up.

And decided not to quietly leave a place with so much potential for good.
