  I received a package from my mother today

  my dub mother sent me a package today, inside was a nwt bible, a picture of me around age 5 at an assembly - i looked miserable and my dad was holding a battery operated fan in front of me, and a letter, here is the letter.

  i ask that you remember that i was 18 when i left and i'm now 42, that there is a total of 8 children in my family and there are only 2 that are still jw's, oh and that my mother is a complete nutcase!

  Religion tries to bring back prohibition in Alabama

  what century are we in?.

  the upstanding moral christian folks are praying and fasting in advance of a vote to ban liquor sales in athens, a city in northern alabama with a population of about 21,000. .

  You're right, Eclipse. Prohibition hasn't solved anything, rather seems to have exacerbated the problem.

  When, as kids, we went into the neighboring county to buy alcohol, we always had a designated driver. We were responsible kids simply out to have a little fun. The driver was old enough to purchase alcohol; we were under the legal age for drinking it; but we knew better than to drink and drive. Our purpose wasn't to get drunk, anyway. We lived in the backwoods, the girls were not allowed to go skinny-dipping, so we had to do SOMETHING!

  Junction Guy, I'm sorry for your unhappy memories. My dad, uncles, and brothers were full-blown alcoholics, so I feel your pain.

  residents of the southern Alabama town of Thomasville were to cast their ballots Tuesday on whether to legalize alcohol sales.

  Interesting. Thomasville, located in Clarke County, is right across the Alabama River from my county of Wilcox. The people of Thomasville come across the river to buy alcohol and return home to drink it. What's the difference?

  Our county was "dry" until 1970. We used to go to Dallas County; buy our beer and wine; return to Wilcox County and have a blast! No one can or should legislate other people's behavior.

  An Interesting Tidbit

  i'm using a public terminal at our bitty little old hometown library because i've lost my in-home connection.. the wife of the po of my old congregation works here, and she gave me the strangest look imaginable when i walked in.

  right after i registered and took my place, a sweet little auxiliary pioneer came in and sat right across from me!.

  i thought to myself, what in the world is going on?

  AN UPDATE...I came in earlier today and took my station as usual.

  The PO's wife gave me the usual peculiar look. Someone sitting right next to me had trouble with his terminal. She hurriedly came to his assistance before any of the other assistants could do so. I know that she wanted to look over my shoulder to see what I'm reading every day.

  I was reading the posts about the Barbara Anderson hell. I scrolled slowly so that she could have plenty of time to read them all. I could feel her eyes boring into my back as she stood there. I laughed silently to myself as I thought of what a story she would have to tell hubby!

  On a lighter note, the head librarian asked me if I was interested in part-time employment here. I won't be able to work the hours required, but my college-age daughter should be able to. I'm taking her the application so that she can let the librarian know if she's interested. This has been a great week!

  The letters are from when Don was DO in Oregon in the mid-1990s. They are about the congregations dealing with a notorious in that area - nothing bad about Don himself. And if I remember correctly, his wife's name was Natasha.

  Thank you. He is the one. He gave a talk at a CA once, pointing a finger at a Catholic priest from south Alabama who confessed to years of ual abuse of boys in his parish.

  I wonder if he remembers that talk? I certainly do. He even had a copy of the newspaper that reported on the case. It was a notorious case in a small town that really set tongues to wagging. Talk about the chickens coming home to roost! Hallelujah!
