The reasoning of Watchtower articles is akin to being confronted with a large bully holding a pipe wrench saying "should you try to get by me? that's your personal choice." The classic formula of "this is your personal choice" followed by several paragraphs of negative statements about it is how the society gives orders without giving orders. JWs are all-too-eager to read between the lines.

"I despise them and their anecdotal stories. Their assemblies and special talks were full of them. "
It always struck me as strange how every convention will have a talk about "not spreading false stories." It'll basically tell you to not believe e-mail forwards even if they're favorable because they're rhetorical and unverified. Yet in the very next talk they will let loose a barrage of unverifiable, anecdotal stories that are no different than those e-mail forwards. -

"This just absolutely cracks me up - we are getting this information way before the JWs"
Hell, I use the posts on here to keep up with what's going on at the hall. Thanks to JWD I know what everyone's talking about so it's like I still go to meetings. -

What did you not like about the paradise?
by reneeisorym ini have always loved it when the seasons changes.
i was always told that we would have temerate weather all of the time and the seasons wouldn't chage.
i always thought i would miss the changing leaves, budding flowers after it has been so cold, and the snow.

When I was about 6 years old, I asked my parents if there would still be meetings and service in the new system. They said yes. I haven't looked forward to the new system since.

Interesting NWT translation deviation
by B_Deserter inwikipedia artice.
i was reading a little bit about lilith and i noticed the list about 1/4 down the page showing what various modern translations render the hebrew lilit in isaiah 34:14. i found it interesting that while most translations render it in an accurate form (night monster, vampire, night hag, lilith, or night creature), the nwt breaks with this and renders it "nightjar," which is a common nocturnal bird.
do you think the society rendered this verse so that it would make isaiah seem less of a myth (talking about vampires and demons of the night doesn't really help the bible stay on the credibility wagon)?

Do JW's ever go into churches for "new recruits"?
by Brymichmom ini run another discussion board on yahoo for former jw's.
anyway, one of my members there said she was listening to hank hannegraff (bible answer man) with ron rhodes and the discussion was about jw's going into churches for "new recruits".. he said the process goes as follows....the jw's don't tell anyone they are jw, they wait until the invitation, then when people go forward, they go as well and befriend new christians and invite them to a bible study.
he said it was referred to as "sheep stealing".

The latest official policy is that if a JW attends services in another church, s/he is considered disassociated. I highly doubt this "tactic" was ever given the green light by Brooklyn, but was probably the actions of an overzealous dub who took it upon himself, undoubtedly imagining an article about him on the back of a future Awake. I wonder if the person that told this to you was really talking about how JWs would protest outside of churches back in the early Rutherford days.

A good reply to the "pioneer or you're nothing" crowd.
by B_Deserter inwhenever i used to get hassled for not pioneering, i love passing along this little nugget of wisdom: "can you imagine what it would be like if everyone in the congregation pioneered?
no one would make any money to put in the contribution box, donate for gas, or buy groceries for the pioneers!
everyone would starve!".

Hundreds of Failed Predictons
by writetoknow infailed predictions:sometime in 2000: many christian individuals and groups have long anticipated that christ's return would happen in 2000 ce.
many of them believe that this event would be preceded by a 7 year period called "the tribulation.
" they expected that this interval would start in 1993 and that 42 months into the tribulation, terrible things would occur.

What's with the Oct. 2, 1984 Witness prediction? I don't seem to remember that. Of course I was 2 years old at the time and likely don't remember.

JWs Have a NEW TACTIC (at least to me)
by Gretchen956 ini have a new job now and take mass transit, the max train into town and then a short bus trip to work.
in between i have about 3 to 6 blocks to traverse, depending on what time it is and which bus i'm catching.
today i'm walking the last bit to my stop and watching the street for signs of the bus, and two women come walking up, at a good clip, and i can tell they are handing something out.

My favorite JW Tactic: These pioneer sisters I know (who are both now dfed) would drive 1 1/2 hours to West Virginia, offer a magazine at one gas station, drive 1 1/2 hours back to Ohio, and count all that time.
Now THAT is service.
