Judicial Committee versus Sharia Law...
by tenyearsafter inhas anyone thought about how similar jw judicial committees are in function to islamic sharia courts of law?
they both judge people using religious standards and can hand down "death" sentences for those violating those standards.
granted, jw's can't physically kill you for violating the wt standards (though they would if it is was legal), but they can "kill" you in the eyes of your jw friends and family...and they believe you are dead in god's eyes as well.

Despite the similarities, JW's would be the first to point out how inhuman and cruel Sharia Law is...especially in denying Moslems the choice to change their belief systems...ironic, huh?

Going door to door to recruit members doesn't work
by JH inwhen you look at all the hours they do going door to door world wide and then you look at how many hours preaching it takes to bring just 1 person to their organization, it's not efficient.. my mom goes to a baptist church now, and i was surprised to know that 500 go to that meeting on sundays and they don't go door to door to go get these people.. there might be 80 witnesses at my hall and going door to door doesn't make much of a difference.
maybe it's even counter productive since people don't like being pested at home..

eric,
I agree with you...I wasn't arguing for or against the stats other than to point out how numbers can be manipulated to create confusing information. The JW's do have some growth in the USA, but the greater increases are outside of the Western countries. If we really drilled down into how the increases were determined, I am sure that the majority of increase among JW's is from the addition of the children of current members to the "new" membership roles. The Pew Report also notes that JW's have the highest attrition rate of "born in" members. If we were to determine net growth rates of JW's solely by their addition of recruits from the door to door work, I would guess we would see a zero or negative growth rate in the USA.

eric356,
My favorite little saying is: "figures never lie, but liars figure". The growth numbers attributed to JW's is always stated in percentage increase. That is fine if you are comparing same to same, but that is not the case here. To say that JW's with 7 million members is faster growing than a religion with 100 million members is deceiving if you compare percentages. That is like saying that if I started a religion with myself and and my wife, and we added one member we would have experienced a 50% growth rate that year...does that make my religion the fastest growing in the USA? If you compare total number of members increased, JW's aren't even close...

phoebed story - part 2
by phoebed inokay guys, i have a little time on my hand ( a little).. as i was going through public school, the persecutions and ostracism remained.
it was a very difficult thing to be a jw kid in comunism.
parents could not "homeschool" like in us, which i am sure my mother would have done if she could.

Where in the Bible does it say God is omniscient?
by sabastious ini don't care about scriptures that say god is "all knowing" or "know all my hairs on my head" cause that could all be done without being omniscient.
are there any bible verse's that speak specifically of god's omniscience?.

Sab,
How are you defining omniscient? I looked up the meaning and Webster's defines it as:
Definition of OMNISCIENT
1 : having infinite awareness, understanding, and insight 2 : possessed of universal or complete knowledge I keep seeing everyone agreeing the Bible says he is all knowing...isn't that what the dictionary's definition says? -

My two cents on all of this is that everyone should be free to have an opinion and a position...that is one thing we were not allowed to enjoy as JW's. The danger I see is that the lack of tolerance for other's opinions or beliefs is what alienated us about JW's in the first place, and many easily fall back into that same pattern in there current beliefs.

Why do we call Jehovah by his first name and not our parents?
by life is to short ini owe this question entirely to hadit but i cannot get this thought out of my head.
all i heard growing up was that we have to call god jehovah because they are many god's, this way jehovah knows we are trying to speak to him.
that is just one of many reasons the fds and wt say to why we much call him jehovah.

If memory serves me right, Jesus only addressed God as Father...as mentioned earlier, he taught us to pray by starting with "Our FATHER who art in heaven..." If using the name Jehovah was so critical to our worship, why didn't the one who set the pattern for our worship, Jesus, use that personal name?
