@trueone...Terry definitely makes some compelling points. I would still like to hear the JW rationale for accepting the Canon and rejecting doctrine that sprang from the same or similar Councils of that time period.

Closest thing I have been to is In n' Out Burger...they have scriptures on the bottom of their drink cups (or at least they used to)...Alaska Airlines used to have a printed prayer on every tray of food they gave out to passengers.
If that were a decider for JW's, they missed out on some good burgers!
(Sorry Wha Happened...I just saw your post on In n' Out)

I agree Leolaia...the credibility of an argument loses steam when you trot out myths as facts!
Maybe you can weigh in on the reason JW's accept the Bible Canon when they reject other things brought forth by "Babylon the Great"?...have you come across this in your varied studies and research?

I have had the question of the Bible Canon in my mind for years (even as a JW)...forget why they didn't cobble together their own set of inspired books so that they could be "unique", my question for years has been...
If you condemn Christendom, and Catholicism particulary, as being Babylon the Great (and thus from Satan), how can you accept and base your "true" teachings on something compiled by Satan?? I have never had someone who could explain that to me.

Trimline, Snap On and don't forget the fire/water damage restoration franchises that went around in the late 80's and 90's.

I think the point TheSheppard is that, regardless of the reason, the Elders have no right to dictate things in a family matter to those "outside" the "Truth". If other family members wanted him to leave, that would be a different matter...but unless, R&R is not posting the full story, I would say these Elders were WAY out of line.

WTS position on DF'ed family members
by harleybear inwhat is the wts going to do if a non df'ed individual is the primary care provided for say an elderly family member or a handicapped child or parent?
many of us are in the position that without our assisting these folks they would have no where to turn.
does not the bible admonish a responsiblity to these loved ones??

The JW mentality is unique...it is all about spinning things to one's advantage. I am sure some JW's would step up and help a DF'ed relative. The Elder's Manual leaves some "wiggle" room:
" . . . What is done may depend on factors such as the parent’s true needs, his attitude and the regard the head of the household has for the spiritual welfare of the household.”
When the shoe is on the other foot, the JW's would absolutely expect the DF'ed person to care and provide for their JW relative. I can speak from experience on this one. As I have mentioned in previous posts, my JW mother relies on me to take care of many of her needs, as well as visit her on a regular basis (as the Congregation has pretty much forgotten her), yet when I am not around she wastes no time bad-mouthing me and telling everyone who is near, my wife included, what a bad and evil person I am. It is all about them, and not about doing the "right thing".

I was on a flight from Atlanta to LA a number of months back and sat across the aisle from her. I was actually taken aback by how good she looked, as I was expecting her to have much more "wear and tear" based on all of the news stories of the past about her. She was pleasant and didn't seem to show any signs of substance abuse at the time. It is a very sad thing to hear of her passing...a truly talented singer. If substance abuse was a contibutor to her death, it just reinforces how insidious drug use can be...

"You will be objects of hatred "a reasonable understanding
by luap inindeed thats just what witnesses are.

is there any other group in "christendom "that are hated as much as these.?

Luap,
Welcome to the Board. Rather than just post what you have been told are the facts about JW's versus orthodox Christendom, I would suggest you study in depth the origin of those beliefs you criticize. After you have studied the facts, then you can make comments in a credible manner. This type of study may reinforce your belief in JW teachings, change your thinking to accept orthodox Christendom's belief or reject both teachings. The key to be taken seriously is that you have to be objective and accurate in your pronouncements.
