Not sure if this is the right area
by Zoewrex inall - of course i'm new to this board (or any board) and have an 'issue'.
my father and step-mother are both jw's and i know i can't argue with them.
however they're important to me and yet after a visit, i feel as if they are chipping away at my own spirit.

Valis is right. Handle a problem while it is small, and you will have no big problems. Nip it in the but now, or you'll be back here looking for ways to undo things that have developed that never would have if they'd never been allowed in the first place. If you give a JW an inch, they'll take 144,000.
And, um, welcome.

Being Gay Is a Choice
by ISP inbeing gay is a choice by david cornwell
a different perspective on the old argument
have you ever heard a person make this statement?

Hi Gumster - How 'bout the bible is God's word AND homosexuality is a genetic flaw? This means that God accuses and condemns his own mistakes, doesn't it? To me this observation serves more to prove that the bible isn't god's word as I believe God to be slightly more honorable, more ethical than that.

It seems plain to be by the manner in which the stoy is told that the teller was gay all along and was choosing to resist it. In this sense, being gay is a choice alright - it's a choice to acknowledge the pre-existing sexual preference.
amac - yes "scientists," whatever that means, have searched and continue to search for the reason that some people are homosexual. There are theories so far, but not many facts. Most importantly, the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. At one point in the history of this planet, it was accepted truth that the planet was flat; it was believed to be flat because there was an absence of evidence that it was round. The passage of time and the enhancement of wisdom eventually proved the truth. The same will happen regarding homosexuality.

A lawdriver insists with threats and penalties; a preacher of grace lures and incites with divine goodness and compassion shown to us; for he wants no unwilling works and reluctant services, he wants joyful and delightful services of God" - Charles Stanley
Is this the same Charles Stanley who is the pastor of the huge First Baptist Church of Atlanta? Isn't it amazing that a hardshell Southern Baptist can get it so right, and "God's organization" get it so wrong?

Will The Pope Just Die Already!
by xjw_b12 inin the newspaper today there was an article on pope john paul's visit to crotia.
this is his 100th pilramage, in his 83rd year.
in 2 weeks he is scheduled to go to bosnia, where i doubt he'll get as warm as a reception as he did in croatia.

Yeru, I'm really interested to know upon what scripture does the Catholic Church insist that each and every act of sexual intercourse leave open the possibility of conception? From this concept comes the entire contraception debate, and I'd like to know upon what it's based.

"The publishers were also encouraged to donate when they picked up their literature..." Encouraged. Right. If "encouraged" means "browbeat."

Bigot - A person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his own opinions and prejudices.
OR
Bigot - A person who obstinately favors his own opinions and prejudices rather than mine.
I think you'll find that the JW definition of bigot is the latter of the two presented above, which is a loose paraphrase of Ambrose Beirce in his Devil's Dictionary, which I can't find at the moment.

getting along or avoidance.....you decide
by SpiceItUp inin the spirit of minimus, as i just caught his thread about getting along with others here, and it posed a seperate question for me that actually came into play for me yesterday.
i'm not going to go into detail on that but the question remains nonetheless.. where do you draw the line at getting along with someone or merely just avoiding confrontation?
this comes into play in everyones life.

In my experience most people do not recognize the true strength of gentleness. It is viewed as weakness by most everyone except others who practice this form of gentleness.

Frankly, if it were in my power (that is if the circumstances allowed) I would not allow my son to be called before any damned JW kangaroo court and have the elders pawing through the most intimate and private transaction in human life. They could kiss my ass. The boy isn't baptised, and after the treatment he's likely to get as a result of this, he may loose all interest in the JWs - it is to be fervently hoped for at least.
If he wants to go, absolutely go with him; please don't allow him to go by himself and leave him to the tender mercies of those modern-day Pharisees. In some congregations, both the boy and girl are met with together to tell their tail, er, tale. I would not allow it under any circumstances. And you don't have to give them any reasons, either. All you have to do is tell them that you don't believe it's honorable or moral to do such a thing. If they come up with some example in the bible, you can always say "just because they did it that way in the Bronze Age doesn't mean we should do it that way today."
It will be interesting to see how the girl's father reacts. Since he's an elder, you should expect exemplary christian behavior characterized by love and compassion and understanding, right? Let's see if that's what happens.
I think I can tell that you're going to stand up for your son and not be pushed aside by any committee of idiots. He will be sooooooo grateful to you for standing with him.
I feel sorry for the girl. She's really going to
get screwed, er, she's really going toget the shaft, um, she's reallyhad it, oh wow, erm, well, I just feel sorry for her. I'm really not making light of a bad situation, only attempting to relieve some of the stress with a smile. When is the first judicial committee meeting going to take place?
Perhaps you should purchase a copy of Margaret Mead's Coming of Age in Samoa and give it to the girl's dad. He'd love it NOT. But frankly, puberty (designed and built by God, btw) happens around 12 or 13, the hormones are raging around your bloodstream at near the speed of light, the girls can hardly sit still, the boys are so hard a cat couldn't scratch it and they're supposed to put up with that kind of instinctual raging for HOW MANY years without sex AND masturbation will make you go blind and is against Jehovah's eternal plan (I asked if I could do it until I needed glasses). Teen sex is the norm. Only in wacko religions is it wrong.
