BirthdaysSimple Deconstruction of the JW Rationale
by AuldSoul into deconstruct the jw rationale surrounding birthdays, a few simple guidelines should be followed.. (1): don't waste any energy trying to convince a jw that birthdays are not pagan, if they suggest that, readily agree.
whether or not the celebrations are pagan turns out to be a non-issue that distracts from the main point.. (2): stay focused on the fact that jws disfellowship people for celebrating birthdays.. (3): stress the point that there should always be clear scriptural reason for disfellowshipping someone.
ask them often throughout the discussion whether this is the case, get them to reinforce this need to themselves.. (4): remember, the first goal is deconstructing their rationale, not giving them a new rationale, not convincing them that celebrating birthdays is a good thing.. once you have these well in mind, the deconstruction can begin.. jw rationale, in brief:.

fantastic points audsoul - funnily enough I've last week had the subject of birthdays come up. I 'openly' decided to go to my nephew's swimming pool birthday party cos they needed swimming supervisors.
So hopefully and tactfully I'll be able to use those points to explain. Thanks

A Bible Question, please comment
by restrangled inthere will have to be assumptions involved here.....that god exists, the bible is the word of god and creation is as stated in genesis, etc.
etc.. in the old testament, god seemed pretty straight forward, let certain people know (and not by osmosis) his intent.
backed certain kings, and showed power through physical occurrences over and over again.. along comes his son, who died for the entire race as a ransom for adam's sin.

restrangled, good question - jumping in with both feet here
So this is my question: God always dealt pretty straight forward with the human race, so why is his book so complicated that none of us are smart enough to get it? Does it make sense that he would only allow a select few to understand what he was trying to say? Maybe it is very simple and it has been complicated to no end my false religion........(you get my drift)
I agree with some of the others in that the we are looking at the bible as a finished product after the fact from our perspective - but at the time that it was being written and before that there was just as much mystery, misunderstanding and 'unstraightforwardness' going on just as it is today. The structure of human society was changing - from families to tribes, to landownders to cities, to nations etc. (but not necessarily in that order covering myself there).
The bible writings give some sort of coherence to the complexity of developing human society imo.
re - scientific knowlege today re the universe's orderliness - again to me we are examining more or less completed stuff or stuff that is changing very very slowly. Whereas society is changing fast. To me that is why religions seems so divided and at sea, they reflect the diversity of humans trying to be orderly.
Hope I haven't strayed too much from the point you are trying to isolate by your question.

Pride and Shame- An Interesting Perspective
by nvrgnbk inpride and shame: seeing that your behavior arises on its own - out of your particular biologically given traits and your particular career through life, not from a non-material controlling self - might pry you loose from excessive pride and shame.
your successes resulted from personal characteristics given to you in their entirety by nature and nurture, combined with circumstances in which you could express your talents.
likewise, your failures arose not from some weakness of will that could have been otherwise, but out of conditions which can be understood as the natural unfolding of physical and psychological processes.

Anyone with the same internal and external circumstances would have done as well, or as badly. Understanding this won’t change the fact that you enjoy success and regret failure, but it may loosen the grip of ego and ease the burden of self-blame.
That's a very freeing way of looking at things

Do you look forwards, backwards or sideways?
by mtsgrad inmorning faders, da's df's and current witnesses,.
the whole of my life in the troof was spent looking forward to the end of this wicked system.
over 30 years of waiting for jehovah to sort out the ills of mankind.

Now I have left I look back at all the wasted years, looking at the things I could have done. I know it is not productive, but I cannot help myself. Am I on my own? How do you look at life; forwards, backwards or sideways?
mornin mtsgrad
I think its healthy and productive to go though a period of mourning as it were for the losses you suffered. And sometimes the past can sit like a disabling obstacle in your forward path and obscure your vision, so you may need to take a sideways path too that seems to take you a little backwards in order to go forwards.
So i think I 'm saying all three - forwards, backwards and sideways for a period of time.

hi
by fedorE ini like the way many of u think.....anyways since early 90's when i was dfd i totally abandoned the society but left my great amazing son in it ....didnt speak to my family except my mom for about 14 yrs and as she always invited me to move back home rent free!
in an empty house they visit from time to time.
i kept thinking: well my dad is getting to be 71 now ..and even tho i still speak in secret to my son (he had to stop seeing me 2yrs ago) maybe ill bs my way back in and i can actually see my son again and reestablish family ties...since i had broken up with my girlfriend.

i was never interested in stupid convoluted explanations about dates or how a scripture in revelation applied to the anointed.

Human Nature
by nvrgnbk inare we essentially moral beings, corrupted by society?.
or are we in fact amoral, socialized by cultural pressures and religious beliefs?.

Why do some parents abuse and neglect their offspring, while others adopt and raise, with great love and sacrifice, children who are not biologically their own?
I've often pondered this question.
I think that we all have it in us to neglect and abuse and to show great love and sacrifice. What we choose to do is modified by our upbinging, our circumstances, by what is expected of us, our mental and emotional make up etc. Society can play a part in the support and education it offers. But I think generally human nature is more inclined towards forming caring relationships.

I think our human nature has developed over time through our interaction with one another and with our environment. And language is a product of that which in turn lead to the formation of society and culture
On an indiviual basis a newborn learns about society and right and wrong through communication and interaction with family becoming a member of society and absorbing culture and religion at the same time. Just guessing
edited to add: i think my answer is off point.
