i just came across it while looking for something entirely unrelated to jws.
he has an interesting take on an encounter with jws.. did you feel the preaching tactic/magazine topics that started out talking about something completely different than religion....were deceptive?.
Ha...it took a minute to figure out what a Pastafarian is but I agree...we did it all the time...start off talking about excercise, depressed teens, rising cost of living, etc...suck them in...then hit them with the Jehovah-load.
Do witnesses still say they are not out to convert people but that Jehovah converts people or that people convert themselves after learning the message? Can't believe we used to spout that nonsense.
i`ve been "hanging around" on this jw.net for a while, so this is my very first posting.
i`m a former jw from germany, learnt the truth at the age of 20, got babtized 3 years later, and left the wt (for various reasons) about 4 years ago.
so i just like to say a warm friendly "hello" to everyone.

i have posted the beginning of this story a while back.
my 14 year old grandson founded helping step by step to call attention to the plight of homeless children in this country.
he will walk from orlando fl to washington dc this summer, living as close as possible to how a homeless child lives.
Have you contacted your local media to help get the word out? It may help with sponsorship. This is absolutely fantastic that your grandson is doing this and that he has your support!

knowing what you know now, are you embarrassed that you ever believed in the jehovah's witness religion?.
No I'm not surprised I believed it at one time because I was raised in the religion. However, I would like to believe that I would not have been bamboozled if I had been introduced to the religion as an adult. It always amazes me that adults will give up their self-identity and holidays to join the JWs.
I don't tell people about my JW past not because of embarrassment but because everyone is related to a JW and I don't feel like being hounded.
the jw is long time best friend of my daughter, and she's having her 18th soon, surprise party.
i'm assuming it's best to just not invite him.
i don't want to offend him by inviting him, but i just want to be sure it won't hurt his feelings if i don't invite him.
No, its not offensive because deep down they want to sing happy birthday and eat cake just like everyone else.
i remember back when the convention used to be four days, and there was no afternoon session on friday(or was it thursday?).
instead we were supposed to go out in field service in the afternoon.
they did this up until about the early to mid-80's.
I remember those conventions as a kid...4 friggin' long days. The best parts were that I got new dresses for each day, the cheese danishes and the hoagies with that strange italian dressing that cost 12 tickets. Remember the food tickets?
We only did field service after the convention once. We meet with the congo after our cleaning assignment, then he told everyone to just visit their return visits and invite them to the Sunday session. We got in the car with our mom and did one rv and went home. Not many folks participated in that field service arrangement.

I think people should say the pledge as an act of respect to the country in which one currently resides. It simply means "Hey, while I'm in this country, I'll try to be a good citizen and uphold the values of this nation." Now if you don't agree with the values of the nation, then you don't have to say the pledge.
Anyway, I always wanted to say the pledge when I was a kid. I did it one time when I was first grade. It felt very liberating or maybe it was normalcy. When I was in elementary school, they said the pledge everyday and sang the national anthem once a month. I love the national anthem, especially at big sports events...."and the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there"
a more detailed look at the just released american religious identification survey (aris) shows witnesses have increased from 1,331,000 in 1991 to 1,914,000in 2008. that is 583,000 more people, or a whopping 43.8 percent growth.
they now make up 0.8 percent of the u.s. population.. who says jws are in the decline?.

The poll likely allows self-identification as the criteria to judge whether someone is a JW
Many people that have studied with JWs at any time, have JW relatives or were raised as JW will identify themselves as JW even if they were never baptized. They check the box of the religion they came the closest to joining or the most familiar one. The poll findings are skewed.
