i have an in-law who lives in mexico.
not too long ago a dub asked how he was doing.
as we talked, i related my in-law's story about how recently in mexico the cops cracked down on the drug dealers.
Jimmy...that wasn't an opinion...anything to protect the org.
Anyway, some american witnesses are also running into trouble with the law in mexico. Something about they are not to do house-to-house work but its okay to conduct bible studies. Don't have any additional details.
just thinking back on my own family that started with the jws in the early 50's, .
both of my parents came from different religious backgrounds one was catholic and the other a anglican.. what probably sparked my mother's attention, who was the first to be in contact with a jws, .
was of course the destruction of the system of things and a new paradise for those that god approved.. and i'm guessing that this what catches most peoples attention just as it did to my mother.. i'm also assuming that this is most likely what grabs other people as well.......any comments ?.

Seriously, I don't think there is anything you can say\do other than listening to them and respecting their decision. Whether they go back because they believe its the truth or for better family relations, its their choice. There are a number of folks on this board that have "left" but are still in. What's the difference? Everyone's limit on what they are willing to endure is different.

BluesBrother- When comes to counting studies, remember that CO's and their wives count studies differently than regular publishers.
Also, it depends on the region and congregation, not everyone uses the third visit rule. Honestly I didn't. If I visited you and you talk with me on a regular basis and we talked about a specific topic from the bible or even if we did one paragraph in a tract, brochure or book at a time...you were a bible study. Even if I only caught you once a month, you were a study that I conducted once a month. So if you asked me how many studies did I have I would respond "I have 8 studies but only 2 are regular".
The JW numbers are all over a place especially now that the publishers don't have to turn in bible study slips anymore.

i was methodist.
i was horrified when attending my first jw meeting and hearing the simple piano music over the speakers ... compared to the live orchestra performed at the methodist church.
I was raised in the craziness but decided to take the plunge as a teenager just in case it was true. Besides, what's the worst that could happen? Ha...if I could turn back time...oh well.

never mind she hasn't talked or heard from then in over a decade.. they made a point of ignoring me, and spoke only to nina.

i admire the jw's who seem to be not too affected by what the society teaches.
for instance; my brother became a jw when he met his wife, who was born into the wts.
his wife and her family, always seemed to be very gregarious people, and enjoy life very much.
Garybuss, you are spot on.
Its very difficult to be a liberal witness in the midwest even if you are a productive witness with a title (pioneer, MS, elder, CO). People watch your every move and force you to conform. If you don't conform, they are basically watching the clock and waiting for you to slip-up. LOL...They're a bunch of holy-rollers that believe all west coast witnesses are going to be destroyed.
When you leave the midwest, you find that congregations varies greatly...from 'go to college so that you can support yourself' to 'if you really love jehovah just clean the toilet and pioneer'. From "get your own place so you know whats its like to manage your own finances" to "don't leave your parents house until you get married even if you're 60 years old".
I don't think liberal JWs are more likely to leave than the militant ones. It depends when either are willing to see that there really is no Wizard but just the little men behind the curtain.
i'm delighted to say our latest addition to the family, fergus keir hunter, was born on saturday morning - 6.06am - weighing in at 6lbs 12oz.
mum and baby are both doing very well.
our other two kids are very pleased, cameron in particular; he's now got the wee brother he's always wanted.. i twittered throughout the pregnancy and you can find the 'tweets' here.. .
