If you cannot "reach" someone because of certain psychological "blocks," wouldn't that indicate you need to get into their head more, rather than just use pure reason? And if people are just more receptive at certain times, doesn't that imply knowing it well enough to see when that is? (and unfortunately, they may not be posting at the time) Messy as it may be, you gotta know people and be good at it. Of course the difference between this and the JW concept is this is individualized, the "spiritual food" of the WTS is only specific to the group - which isn't very specific at all.

Fear of death.
by JeffT ini'm noticing a trend in the modern world.
everything comes with a scare story.
this was prompted by the shark steak thread and the talk about mercury in the food chain.

Thanks for that link Twitch, it was a good movie.
It's ironic that living is a completelydynamic process, and what people've come to learn is to hold on to or push things away - which is the exact opposite. Here's to living and dying with dignity, security and comfort be damned.

Life Goes too Fast
by Undecided ini'm getting depressed lately realizing my life is fast comming to an end.
so many of my acquaintances in this life are dying and it won't be long before i will be gone.
there is nothing we can do to stop it.

Rather than enjoying things you have to get or do, enjoy your self.

Not at all, isn't the question "all about you"? If you indulged in it for pages of posts that would be one thing, this isn't anywhere near that.

When did we stop being customers and start being consumers?
by truthseeker ini really hate the word "consumer" - i see it all the time, in reports, business news, the markets.. consumers aren't consuming, they aren't spending.. a consumer sounds like some brainless automaton whose sole purpose is, well, to consume.
.
in the old days we were customers who made purchases - now we just consume.. does anyone else feel the same way?.

Although there's something to be said for customers being more informed, you have to buy into something - whereas consumers just consume. All you can eat is not necessarily a good thing.

Wouldn't that be two things then..? Sorry couldn't resist. I imagine such a scenario might involve having family still in..

This thread reminds me of that scene in Fight Club where he is getting the chemical burn on his hand, and he's trying to find escape by visualizing going into a cave and finding his power animal. (which happens to be a penguin) Tyler who is administering the torture says ".. first you have to know, not fear that someday you are going to die. Until then you will be useless." (I think they left that last part out of the movie) Fear of anything usually involves avoidance, which in the end is avoidance of life in some shape or form.

You betcha. Even in the information age where people consume all that's on the internet, etc. it's not exactly a wise investment for the most part, or much of a meaningful exchange right? And for that matter, how many are truly productive - or is it just regurgitating the same in slightly different forms?

"... you can't say to someone 'look it isn't really like that' because
by educ8self in" that's a quote from a lecture given at naropa university on 12 levels of consciousness (or initiation, to use another term) that i go back to from time to time.
i won't get into the whole thing but a recent experience with someone with kind of an innocent attitude helped me appreciate this point.
one of the things said was when you've reached a higher level (which is not to imply better in any sense of personal worth, but simply more inclusive in scope/perspective) you automatically have compassion on those who have not reached that level.

One of the things said was when you've reached a higher level (which is not to imply better in any sense of personal worth, but simply more inclusive in scope/perspective) you automatically have compassion on those who have not reached that level. Although there's no great story because it's not really some aha moment, somehow after meeting this person I literally can't seem to get upset at people for being a certain way anymore. Another post I was working on made me realize that knowing a person's mental state is just as important as the content of what they are communicating, there is that relational dimension which is not really touched on in a discussion that is strictly academic. And in thinking about the levels it becomes obvious that this perspective is indicative of a lack of interest in the 2nd level which is all about polar opposites, or the third for that matter which adds a choosing entity. Although I don't think you are necessarily just in one stage but rather have access to and develop on multiple levels at the same time, there is something to be said about where someone is primarily functioning from and really established at. And of course this might be easy to understand conceptually but our dominant view might show we don't really "get it" - for example someone might try to talk about choice (#3) a lot but do so in a reactive, antagonistic way. (#2) Anyway, on a more practical note I suppose it is probably very rare to have a dialogue without relating to the other person on some level, which would mean it isn't just about what is said. Even if it may seem insignificant, (just a post on an internet forum) we are having a direct effect on the other person, then, rather than just exchanging information. To put it another way, we have the power to touch other people's lives. I don't mean this in a touchy-feely sense, just as a reality. So the question is do we do so in a significant way, and is it for better or worse?

Or it could be noise, "bad association" as it were. ;-) But of course then you look at what holds THEM back, it's pretty much the same. Nice poem if you don't know it:
