Reparations & Protest
by Larry inthis weekend i'm going to dc for the reparation march.
i know this is an highly volatile subject for some so i'm not even going to ask for opinions.
but, for the record here's my stand - i'm for reparations based on principle.

Do YOU honestly believe that if these two brothersone white the other blackapplied for the same jobs, bank loans, had the same run-ins with the police, etc the black man with exactly the same economic and social background wouldnt get shot down (perhaps literally) ten times more than his white half-brother? If so, you must not live in the good ole US of A.
Hmmm, first of all I don't live in the good ole US of A. I live in Ireland. You can tell from my profile.
Secondly, I agree that racism seems to be endemic in the USA. I do not agree, however, that the best way to end racism is for the government to distinguish between people based on their skin colour. There is no such thing as positive discrimination. Discrimination based on skin colour is wrong, and should be stamped out, not written into law.

It is quite a funny thing that there are so many more people of color incarcerated, ever stopped to ask yourself why? They cant afford lawyers, they are pulled over more often, they dont get the put on the back and let off as easy BECAUSE of the color of their skin?
Not at all because they're committing more crimes? Which is possibly because there's more of them living in poverty, due to the huge percentage of single-parent black families. How is it the fault of "the white man" that black men keep fathering children and not taking responsibility for them, or is that part of the "ancestral heritage" Larry wants to protect?
So what if your people did not get here until after slavery, you still benefit from the good ole boy's club because of your color. The fact that you cannot even acknowledge that there is privelege based on color in this country proves how well entrenched it is.
So all white people are to blame for all your problems, real or imagined?
There are far more whites on welfare rolls than people of color, look it up on any statistical site. I personally believe it is a class issue as well, if you do not live in a good neighborhood (which up until the late 60s blacks could not!) you go to sub-standard schools, you go to sub-standard colleges (if at all). There are plenty of people who work 50 and 60 hours a week and still cannot make ends meet. Not just blacks, whites too. That is just messed up. It has nothing to do with wanting to work.
So shouldn't these white people get reaparations too?
Imagine this scenario: A white woman has sex with a black man and becomes pregnant. The father disappears, never to be heard from again. She has the child, who is obviously of mixed-race, a "person of color". Shortly afterwards she gets pregnant again, this time by a white man, who also skips town. She brings up both her children together. They have exactly the same economic and social background. Do you honestly believe one of them should be singled out to receive "reparations" or get a job to fill some quota, above his brother? How could that possibly be fair?

But the ugly fact of the matter is, we were striped of our heritage, ancestry, identity, etc so we would not know how to function in Africa. We are a people without a homeland to call our own. We have to assimilate to survive in the US at the expense of losing our ancestral heritage.
Other groups manage it. The descendants of Irish people who were forced to emigrate during the potato famine manage to function in American society and still hold on to their culture. (As far as I know, they are not looking for reparations from the British government.) What ancestral heritage do you want to hold on to, that you would be forced to give up if you did not receive this unearned money?

Damn right, Francois!
The effect of calls for reparation, "positive" discrimination and hate crime laws is to entrench in people the idea that blacks and whites are fundamentally different, that black people are victims of "the white man", that laws should be made distinguishing between people based on race, that black people aren't as good as white people and can't succeed on merit. None of these actions are likely to lead to a society where people "will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

There are thousands of additional problems with reparations. There is also thousands of counter points, but that's not going to stop the movement.
And that's the problem. Even though it can be clearly shown that the idea of reparations being paid is absurd, unAmerican and unlikely ever to happen, the movement keeps on going. Raising "the consciousness of folks" is pointless if your argument is flawed to begin with.

So the right to life of the foetus is not absolute? If the mother was using faulty contraception, are her rights sufficiently violated to override those of the foetus. What if the father decides to disappear and not take responsibility? Are her rights sufficiently violated then?

If you're asking me, then I would say "yes" that is acceptable and understandable. I feel that a woman has no responsibilty to carry a child that was forced upon her against her will.
But doesn't the foetus have the same rights, regardless of how it was conceived? -

1000 leaving Bethel - Why?
by spider inbill said something in his "disfellowshiped" post which i found very interesting.
well, a change occurred at the end of april much like what happened in china.the conservatives used silentlambs as an excuse to squash the liberals and any chance of reform in the organization.why do you think they are asking for 1,000 to leave bethel?
it is the liberals, they are being kicked out wholesale and by doing so the last chance for the organization to save itself.the battle is over, jaracz won.. i had heard about the 1000 people leaving bethel but it was spoken of as "downsizing".

Is this for real? I mean, is this really legal?
Probably, because Bethelites are a religious order and normal rules of employment, privacy etc. most likely don't apply.
