The Fragility of Digital Data & The Impact ...
by SYN indidn't really know which section of the forums to post this in, so i stuck it in "friends"!.
the article linked at the bottom of this post makes some interesting points - according to a study, only .003% of our data isn't stored on some form of computer today.. needless to say, this is a somewhat disturbing statement.
having had loads of experience with computing hardware, one eventually realizes that most of the hardware out there is actually rather unreliable - hard drives, for instance.

Life Created from Scratch
by bboyneko inresearchers in new york have created infectious polioviruses from ordinary, inert chemicals they obtained from a scientific mail-order house, marking the first time a functional virus has been made from scratch and raising a host of new scientific and ethical concerns.. "this shows it's now possible to go from data printed on a piece of paper or stored in a computer and, without the organism itself.
reconstruct a life form," said john la montagne, deputy director of the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases at the national institutes of health.. .

A "Big Bang" of energy from where? (or from what).
From God, of course. Based on your posts here, I can guess what your response is going to be: Where did this "god" come from? Unfortunately, that's a much more difficult question as whatever probability there is that elementary particles defined by very simple rules could come into existence by chance, it's vastly more improbable that something like a god could just pop into existence, so by postulating a god, you have to believe one of three things:
1. God always existed. It is, of course, much simpler and more elegant to accept that the simple laws that we know to exist have always existed, as they require far less explanation than something as complicated as a god.
2. God came into existence by chance. Again, this leads to many more complicated questions than just accepting that the universe came into existence by chance.
3. God was created. This is really the only way to explain the existence of a god. This means there must have been a "super-God" who created God. This inevitably leads to the question: "Where did super-God come from?" To answer this, replace the word "god" with "super-god" in the above three items and repeat as needed.

I found the article on Watchtower Observer but only in Norwegian and the link to the original doesn't work but it's relatively understandable if you read it with an accent

1. I was an extra in the TV Movie St. Patrick: The Irish Legendwith Malcolm McDowell
2. Malcolm McDowell was in Chain of Desire (1992) with Elias Koteas
3. Elias Koteas was in Novocaine (2001) with Kevin Bacon
Patrick Bergin and Susannah York were also in the movie and both also have a Bacon number of 2 but they're not as cool as Malcolm

More Than You "MAY" Know
by QUANTUM ini thought that maybe some may want to see another side of the argument of god verses secularism / evolution verses creationism.
im not interested in the fact that many have lost their religious fervor and become atheists or invented their own belief system, or still accept the bible but with a different twist.
my intention is to make as strong of an argument as i can for the existence of a particular god, who i believe we all once knew and may be privileged to know again.

Quantum, why would anybody who's left one silly 19th-century American cult want to get involved with another? Why don't you visit an ex-Mormon board? You might learn something there

Wasn't there a news item some time ago about Anna Nicole Smith having a lesbian relationship with her JW assistant?

My B/F told me he's a J/W after months of dating!
by Funky_Diva_53_2000 inhi, i'm 17 and i've just recently become a member of this website and i want you to know what has happened to me over the past months.back in sep/oct 2001 i started chatting to a 20 year old bloke via the internet and we developed a great friendship over the net.we would talk online for ages, text and phone each other loads,we sent each other photos of ourselves and he would often put his webcam on for me to see.before i knew it he played a great part in my everyday life...and i spent so much time chatting to him that my college work suffered a lot & i wasn't doing my coursework (i eventually got told to leave as i hadn't done loads of the assignments and stuff & had fallen behind).
after about 6 months we arranged to meet up (i made sure my parents were at home coz i know it's dodgy to meet people from the internet).anyway,he came round my house one evening in march and we got along soo well...he lives quite locally too which was good.our friendship then grew into a relationship and we started dating and going out together,i was sooo happy and i fell for him in a massive way & he said he felt the same way too.to me,he was a girls dream come true...he was kind,caring,fit,good-looking & gentle and i loved him to bits!,i still do,and i thought we'd be together forever.
something that i did find a bit strange though was i hadn't met his family yet or heard my boyfriend talk much about them.i would question him about his family but he seemed to get a bit funny about it and when i mentioned about meeting his family he said something along the lines of ''they're a bit strange, you might not like them'' (or something like that anyway).that got me thinking and i though prehaps they lived in a run-down place or something,or they wern't very nice people and i thought my b/f could be ashamed to let me meet them.i thought to myself to give him time & he'll see that i'm an understanding & nice person and hoped that he would soon come out and tell me what the problem was (thinking it was about what i've just mentioned).

Of course i know about the mistakes that my religion has made in the past, but this only strengthens my faith in it.
Is this some misplaced belief in the law of averages?
It reminds me of the following scene from Blackadder Goes Forth:
Melchett: Good man. Now, Field Marshal Haig has formulated a brilliant new tactical plan to ensure final victory in the field.
[they gather around a model of the battlefield]
Blackadder: Now, would this brilliant plan involve us climbing out of our trenches and walking slowly towards the enemy sir?
Darling: How can you possibly know that Blackadder? It's classified information.
Blackadder: It's the same plan that we used last time, and the seventeen times before that.
Melchett: E-E-Exactly! And that is what so brilliant about it! We will catch the watchful Hun totally off guard! Doing precisely what we have done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll expect us to do this time!

Lots of Jehovah Bashing in Here
by Perfection Seeker ini think when people leave the organization, they lump it all together- jehovah- religion, organization, etc.
i am not doubtful there is a god, but just doubtful that he used the wts to be his one & only means.
just wanted to say that.

With the God of the bible, you have answers to why we are here. Whats lifes purpose? Is there life after death? Why is the world and the people in it suffering?
Where does one go for these answers without belief in the bible or God? When a person comes to the realisation that either of these two could possibly not be the real deal......you are left confused, and you wonder about answers to these things.OK, I'll accept that if you decide to believe in a god, you get answers (albeit probably the wrong answers) to some of the big questions, but how does this make life more meaningful? If you can't find meaning in your day-to-day existence, what exactly are you planning to do for eternity?
Not knowing all the answers does not make life meaningless, nor does the fact that our existence is transient.

Paradise Earth; An interesting Question for JWs
by badboy in.
if there is no aging in paradise earth, expail something to me.. one of the reasons we age and die is because the mitochondrial cells convert items(food???
) into energy, this produces free radicals/toxins which damage the cells, the cells have to produce these toxins to do their work.. in a paradise earth, how will the body produce the energy without damaging the body's cells.. i am interested in any answers.. .

We'll be perfect. Jehovah will make us perfect. Don't you understand, perfect? You mustn't love Jehovah if you're asking stupid questions like that.
At least that's the answer my mother gave me to a similar question.

And on a micro-scale there is a monthly pide in the endocrine system of half the human inhabitants of this planet - the menstrual 28 day cycle.
Which is not clearly not affected by the phases of the moon. If it were, all women in the world would be on the same cycle. A horrifying thought!
The moon is not thought by any meteorologists in this country to bring an appreciable effect changes to the density of the atmosphere. I say they are wrong.
Why do you say that? What do you know that meteorologists don't?
