I meet new moms and kids every time I go to the park. Find one in a nice neighborhood and check out different times of the day to see when there is lots of action. I can be shy as well, but I found that most of the time other moms at the park will approach you if their kid is playing with your's. I made a lot of post-JW friends that way. If things aren't great at the first park, pick a different one next time. :) Good luck!

What the hell was I thinking?! Stupid me!!
by freshstart inso my husband and i have a son who will be 2 years old next month and i really wanted him to be socialized more.
ever since we stopped going to meetings, we have been pretty much shunned even though there has never been an "official" reason for it (df, da..).
i am terribly introverted, so it's difficult for me to get out there and talk to people but our son is a people-person and i wanted him to have more peers to be around.

I started out by mimicking others. There doesn't have to be any religion attached to holidays. It is very easy to remain secular and still join in on the fun. I have enjoyed making my own traditions with my kids. We especially go all out for birthdays! As for my childhood, I simply told them that I didn't celebrate because my parents' religion didn't allow it and then explain how different people believe different things. It didn't come up until they were 6 or so. By then, they had already realized that grandma's house was different. Kids don't judge such things. In fact, it will probably be more meaningful because it will be new to you too so you will be just as excited about all of the fun holiday rituals. Enjoy and relax

A question for Roman Catholics ...
by talesin ini attended a funeral on the weekend, and my friend asked me to go up with her for the wafer (no disrespect intended, i'm not sure of the correct term to use).
she is rc herself, but was shy to walk up alone - it was a large funeral.. .
i did not, because i have been told in the past that it would be very disrespectful.

I was RC for a while. You are not supposed to take communion unless you have been confirmed by the RC Church. You can go up with your arms crossed against your chest and receive a blessing, though. Personally, I don't believe that the communion means anything, so if you did take it and it didn't bother anyone else, then who cares? It only matters for reasons of politeness.
There is a great book called "How to Be a Perfect Stranger" that explains how to act in religious services other than your own. It has helped me through numerous funerals and weddings.

I made it!! I'm just so freaking happy!!!
by Rocky_Girl inas some of you know, i started college 5 years ago for the first time at age 27. i had been out of the "truth" for 9 years at that time, but had just broken free of the mentality.
well, on saturday i walked across the stage with the 130th graduating class at rocky mountain college!.
after 5 years of working several jobs, taking care of two little boys as a single mom, and trying to get the most out of my college experience, i earned my master of accountancy, bachelor of science in business management, and minors in writing and organizational leadership.

wasblind: I'm expecting the call any day to give my experience in the next awake, LOL, or the DC next month... It sort of invalidates the DC experience I did as a teenager, 16, when I graduated high school early and started pioneering instead of going to college.
Yan Bibiyan: I often wonder what a JW would do with a textbook where the questions at the end of the chapter do not have an easy to find and highlight answer.
GLTirebiter, dreamgolfer: It was a lot of work. I finished the BS in three years and then did the MS and added two minors in the last two years. I have amazing mentors that kept me on track. I haven't really slept in five years, but yes! it is so worth it.
harleybear: That is awesome! I found that being a, relatively, older student gave me an edge because of my experience and because I wasn't as succeptible to peer pressure. But, it was harder in that I had real life issues to deal with as I was attending which some of my professors (younger than me) and some other students did not understand. Overall, though, I think I had a better experience than if I had gone as a 20 yr old.
d: I will be looking for your celebratory post when it happens!
Thank you for all the congrats! It means the world to me :)

Haha - Cult Classic! That is about what my mom said in her card...
Lady Lee - I guess I can consider my years of reading Awake! as a fall back in case the accounting field goes south.
I still have a huge smile plastered on my face!

Thanks to all of you! It means a lot to me to share this with all of you.
I don't post much, but the discussions on this board have been of tremendous value to me through the years. Breaking free isn't easy and you all know better than anyone what sort of wacked out problems arise during those AHA moments.

As some of you know, I started college 5 years ago for the first time at age 27. I had been out of the "truth" for 9 years at that time, but had just broken free of the mentality. Well, on Saturday I walked across the stage with the 130th graduating class at Rocky Mountain College!
After 5 years of working several jobs, taking care of two little boys as a single mom, and trying to get the most out of my college experience, I earned my Master of Accountancy, Bachelor of Science in Business Management, and Minors in Writing and Organizational Leadership. And best of all was seeing my parents up in the audience cheering me on!
My advisor passed down to me something her parents told her. "A practical college degree is like a paid-up life insurance policy. It doesn't lose its value and no one can ever take it from you." By practical, she means a degree that isn't limited in scope for career options, ie, a business degree can be used in so many ways.
I am a different woman today than I was when I walked on campus that first time. I stand taller, approach others freely, and I am not afraid to take the reigns and lead people. I no longer doubt myself and my ability to make decisions. What a difference it is to learn critical thinking skills and truly learn to research topics from peer reviewed sources. Knowing how to learn and find the answers to my questions is the best skill I could ever possess.
I have also made friends who believe in me and support me without basing their love on flimsy doctrines and my obedience to elders who are so often caught up in power trips. These are friends who see my weaknesses and hear about my failures and setbacks and encourage me to pick it up, learn from it alll, and keep going. I love these fierce friendships based on mutual respect and genuine attachment.
Not bad for a recovered regular pioneer, eh?

World Could End Soon (Oh, Crap)
by metatron ini hate gloom and doom but sadly..... http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-solar-storms-20120505,0,6214500.story?page=2&sc=7369001384796169482.
this is no laughing matter.
a major cme or flare could wipe out civilization by destroying power grids everywhere.. this is why i get so angry about global warming hysteria - there are far more serious threats that could emerge in months, not decades ahead.. i also understand that a small asteroid is scheduled to come breathtakingly close to hitting earth in two years.
