You're asking all these questions with the basic underlying assumption that the Bible is true and inspired.
What if it isn't?
Take the very simple and easily researched subject of how old the human species is. Even if you don't want to believe in evolution (for the moment), can you prove that Bible Adam and Bible Eve were really the first humans on earth just over 6,000 years ago?
I will venture that you cannot. Why? There is ample evidence of modern human occupation and activity on earth going back tens of thousands of years. In North America alone there are fossil mammoth, ice-age bison and camel skeletons with embedded spear points or evidence of butchering marks that date to over 12,000 years ago.
Where does that leave the Bible? If you want to then say that Genesis was just an allegory, you have to throw out the entire concept of original sin and the promise of salvation.
It then becomes nothing more than a very successful collection of human writings that greatly influenced modern western culture. -

So can somebody fire up their WT library cd-rom and post the definitions as presented in the Insight books? I've only got a mac now so I can't use my copy and I don't remember where I stored all my old books.

It seems that in the latest editions of the WT "the Great Tribulation" is being referred to as something that only the witnesses will survive.
For example, here are some references pulled from the upcoming members-only study edition:
Page 4, par. 1 - "We have a serious responsibility towards the people around us. The decisions they make now will mean life or death during 'the great tribulation.' (Rev 7:14)"
Page 5, par. 7 - "But those who remain in Babylon the Great and who continue to reject Bible standards will not be spared through 'the great tribulation.' (Rev 7:14)"
Page 23, par. 14 - "Hence, after 1935 the thrust of the preaching work turned to the gathering of a 'great crowd,' those whom the apostle John saw in vision and who would survive 'the great tribulation.' (Rev 7:9,10,14)"
ibid, par. 16 - "We can also believe the prophetic Word that the ever-growing 'great crowd' will prove itself faithful. Soon, it will 'come out of the great tribulation' brought upon Satan's world and will joyfully move on into God's new world."
Page 26, par. 10 - "We know that Jehovah will do as he has promised--preserve the great crowd alive through the great tribulation."
It was always my understanding that the great tribulation was a time of testing before the war of Armageddon, for witnesses to prove their faith and endurance to god. It was always Armageddon that was supposed to be the big slaughter that only witnesses escaped.
Can someone post the definitions of both these terms as they appear in the Insight books? -

This brings up a very disturbing aspect of the witness "hope" namely is it better to die young but faithful or live a long productive life?
Many times when I still considered myself in "the truth" I found myself wishing to get cancer or some other incurable disease, or to get run over by a bus or something, because if you die faithful then you'll be resurrected into paradise. Living a long life seems like a pointless exercise in suffering when you think about it in that light.
Since the Bible also says there will be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous, what's the point of waiting anyway? Why not all commit mass suicide and skip the queue?
Jehovah's witnesses aren't really living at all, they're just "holding out" until Armageddon. When the paradise comes THEN they'll start living.
I'm glad I don't believe in the Bible anymore, such a depressing book. -

Saw best jw friend at club...didn't shun me
by tall penguin inback in may i went to a nightclub and ended up seeing one my best jw friends, a friend who refused to say goodbye when i was in the process of disassociating because he was so upset with me.
we'd known each other since we were kids.
our moms were close.

He probably didn't shun you because of a guilty conscience. Going to clubs around this neck of the woods definitely earmarks you as "bad association" and you can expect a back-room discussion and a local needs talk if you're ever ratted out.
I personally dislike clubs so it was never a problem for me, but the other "young ones" received earfuls of "counseling" on the matter. -

I was in Winnipeg when this girl first went into the hospital and it was downright macabre how everyone was treating her as if she had died already (this was BEFORE the forced transfusion).
I wonder if she feels cheated out of an express ticket to paradise?
As an added weird coincidence, the Winnipeg Sun SUNshine girl in that link (the redhead Cayleigh) is someone I worked with last summer. We both sold hideously expensive vacuum cleaners with a bunch of other young people. Small freaking world. -

The Screws are tightening! Fear is paramount for mind control to work!
by Gill ini have recently been noticing my mother's and other relatives' increased fervent and frantic activity in the wt society.. i wondered why they are becoming so fanatical and decided to take an indepth look at the latest watchtowers.. i believe there is a very worrying trend in the wt society now for a apocalyptic zeal that borders on fanaticism and now the wt is tightening the screws with its demand for 'cultic obedience.'.
in the past i wondered whether another 'jonestown,' or similar scenario, was possible, but though the wt may well not ask its members to take their own lives i wonder what the wtbts will ask them to do.. notice these quotes from the december 15th watchtower for 2007:.
page 18 paragraph 15:.

Yeah, it's really sad because my mother is losing her mind because I told her I don't believe the WTBTS anymore. She breaks down into tears and says "Don't turn your back on Jehovah, we are SO close to the end!"
I hate seeing my mom like this. She should be enjoying the years of her life, not living in petrified fear.
The only thing I'm going to say to everyone when/if I'm forced to DA is: "You are all going to die of old age, so am I (barring unforeseen occurrence). If the Bible says there is a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous and 'the wages sin pays is death' then I'll let god sort things out after that."
