Maybe it's possible to have a healthy and happy childhood within the Witness group with rational, objective, sane parents. My problem with that is I've never known a rational, objective, sane Witness.
My Witness childhood is not the one I would have chosen. My parents were not the parents I would have chosen.

I loved the Mic Handler tie. They even had a picture of the pole. Damn, I miss those poles. So long and stiff. I actually had several sisters grab mine.

Terminology: Congregation vs. Unit
by Gram indoes anyone remember when the "so and so" congregation was called the "so and so" unit?
do you know the reasoning behind changing the terminology?
-

Congregations were called companies and the "unit" terms were only applied if there were more than one company in a region (city). In Sioux Falls there was just one company. The officers were called "company servant", "assistant company servant", and (I think) "book study servant". I might be wrong on the third one.
Later in the 50's the company divided but shared a Kingdom Hall building. The were called the "east unit", and the "west unit". The meeting people attended depended on their address. West of Minnesota Avenue was the west unit and east was the east unit.
We were not a religion. Our literature was promoted as "non-denominational". Our meetings were advertised as "non-denominational". Our weekly invitation handbills had "FREE" in bold type twice and "No Collections Taken" printed on them. We were proud of that, like "no collections" had a direct tie to truth. We were not politically neutral, we were political separatists, and we were politically very active. We staged separatist demonstrations by disrespecting the established governments every chance we got.
We were really a political group with a political agenda with a political message. We were not a religion and the Bible was just justification for our bizarre behaviors. -

I ordered myself the Koran...
by digderidoo ini have always wondered what exactly is in the koran, apparently it's written in poetry.. obviously there is a lot of negativity towards the koran from the west, yet many practices that are condemned are not found in the koran, for example women wearing the hijab.. so now that we can read what we want without being told what we can and can't have in our library i thought i'd order a few books.
i just received the gnostic gospels, i have ordered some buddhist transcripts, the book of mormon and the koran from amazon.. ....and why not???

I read the Qur'an and The Book Of The Dead. I skimmed the Book of Mormon, but it didn't fascinate me. Doctrine and Covenants did. That I read and enjoyed. Mostly I enjoyed the work of William Miller and I spend days reading the work of Ellen G White. In those I saw the not too abstract blueprint for Watch Tower policies.
It's always interesting to study the psychology of a follower who cherishes that which the inventor denies. -

You probably have a Google toolbar installed. You might try uninstalling that. Go to Control panel, add-remove programs, and select Google toolbar and uninstall it.

Why December 25 is the Most Important Day to JWs
by notyetx inthe philosophical underpinning of most jw belief is the notion of "otherness.
" jws must stand out and become a "theatrical spectacle" before a wanton and profligate world.
part of this comes from the stories of first century christian martyrdom.

Did Jesus every mention or say anything about Armageddon?
by VM44 inwhat is in the book of revelation doesn't count!.

I wasn't aware that Jesus wrote anything at all. Seems to me at best, all I see is an artist's version of a translation of a of a third party opinion of hearsay.
It's a great story with good lessons and I enjoyed reading it, but I might not be ready to make too many more irreversible living decisions based on works of art, superstition, tradition, or subjective assumptions.
Been there, done that. It didn't work out well. -

Letter of Introduction
by IMHO indoes anyone know about the legalities of sending a letter when you move congregation, that in many cases contains a pack of lies about you and claiming they can't show you it as it's 'confidential'?

The only way they could lie about me would be to say something good about me.
