  Salvia Divinorum Anyone?

  has anyone else tried salvia?

  i recently tried this herb, which is a member of the sage family, via smoking it.

  i must say that it is a psychedellic not for the faint of heart or one who fears the loss of control for several minutes at a time.

  Yeah, we have some friends who are urging us to move up there, partly for that reasong. It gets more tempting all the time, dammit. And not just for the Hospitable Plant. Didja know the Arcata Eye's police blotter breaks out into limericks whenever there's an incident involving a dog? Um, I digress. Yeah, I've had some Humboldt County herb. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

  you may not want him to try the extracted version lest he does it right in a safe place, like out in the woods w/some really good friends

  My son's in his mid-twenties and is an experienced student of several Plant Teachers; he knows this stuff. But I'll suggest it to him next time I see him. Thanks.

  My son tried it and was distinctly unimpressed. He must have been using unfortified leaf. OTOH, he's from Mendocino County, where they have a MDR for weed, I think.

  i have been busy for the past few weeks and finally got around to reading the thread containing bill bowen's latest letter to the governing body.

  apparently the gb just locked the gates and ignored them.

  correct me if i'm wrong, i haven't dug through all the posts... .

  GoodBoy, I just want to call your attention to a false assumption: that B = inerrantist Christian. I believe in gods, but not the god of the Bible; St. Paul's writings mean nothing to me at all, except maybe 1 Cor. 13.

  DF announcements...Is this funny or sad?

  something just struck me as being kind of funny, and never being a jw i'm not sure if it's amusing or sad.

  in the various christian churches i've attended no ones 'departure' is ever announced unless there's a farewell or party, always 'positive' - wishing the departees 'good luck'.

  am i getting this right...everytime someone is df'd or da'd an announcement is made, usually on thursday nights (or whenever).

  Double Edge, my sole experience of organized religion is 1) JW's and 2) Unitarian Universalists. So I have only two examples of reactions to someone leaving the church.

  1) JW, as described: fear and loathing and total silence.

  2) UU: As you described, positives only: "Gently Feral is leaving us to pursue other spiritual paths. Good luck, and come back to visit!" (And then church members take me aside to ask: "So, when are you coming to visit?" "What kind of spiritual stuff are you doing now?")

  What I'm having trouble digesting is the idea that this is true of other, Christian churches. (UU ceased calling itself a Christian church a generation ago.) Christianity believes that "there is no other name under heaven by which to get saved." Do other churches view a change in someone's religion as a good thing? I can see a farewell party for someone who's not changing religions, but just changing congregations or moving out of territory -- but would Methodists throw a farewell party for someone who's joining a Buddhist temple?

  Watchtower Vertical Phonograph

  i remember hearing stories about how the witnesses would use phonographs in service (was this in the 1930's or 1940s?

  ) rather than actually talking to the person, but i had never seen a picture of one until now.

  i didn't know the mechanics of how it worked until i read this description:

  Devil's appearance in WT literature

  i just got the october 15th 2002 issue of the watchtower magazine.

  on pages 8 and 9 we see a caption reading " jesus firmly opposed the devil".

  jesus is standing there pointing at a slouching, hooded man.

  They did have a picture of him once. Can't remember where, whether mag or book. He was a rather handsome fellow, with thick black hair except for a couple of streaks of grey at his temples... where horns might have been, had he had horns... If I recall correctly, he was showing Jesus the wonders of the world, offering them in exchange for an act of worship.

  
  
  
  I remember several renditions of this Bible story -- the most persistent memory is a simple line drawing which portrays Jesus as a bearded brunet and Satan as a youthful, clean-shaven blond, both in pale robes. There might be one in the Great Teacher book or a mid-'70's Watchtower.

  during my watchtower days, from their 'college level education', i had the impression that all street drugs were terribly addictive, as soon as someone did a drug one time, he was hooked.

  SS, I don't have any theory to add, but I second the recommendtion of Terence McKenna for some fine fancy speculation on drugs-in-history.

  Also, when you run out of money and mj at the same time, go to www.basementshaman.com and drop a measly FIFTEEN BUCKS on an ounce of Calea Dreams smoking mix. Almost as powerful as good weed (slightly less psychedelic), smoother and tastier to smoke, just as relaxing, and, while you don't get pretty hallucinations, it will give you interesting and instructive dreams that night.
