I stopped attending meetings and all I got was this sense of civic duty?

more social programs and fun things to participate in like a choir, organized field trips, youth groups
I've heard a couple different reasons why this kind of thing hasn't been carried on in the past - takes time away from preaching work (all work and no play...!), it's the thing that "worldly churches" do and so should be avoided (I hear they do other things in the world, too, like eat, and drive cars, and stuff)...my Baptist friends seemed to not only keep the youth busy but
indoctrinateeducate them as well with this kind of thing. Choir, as you said, and AWANIS youth groups, and the like. How could they pass this up? Oh, yeah...it actually might build friendships and community, which would be a (everyone together) distraction from the preaching work...

Welcome, sis!
Sadly, 10 years won't breed out the part of humanity that rejoices in playing in the "control" playground - either to be protected from thought, or to participate in the "top" slots. The new members will have to have a high tolerance for cognitive dissonance, but history shows that's not too hard to live with (or to be in denial about). I think to survive the WTS will become ever more draconian. In 100 years, maybe they'd either be outlawed, go underground, or morph into a neo-Nazi like cult or - who knows? - evolve into some kind of loving brotherhood.
Time will tell...

I laugh at my own frailties all the time - so much easier than crying!
I can keep a crowd in stitches - so it seems others find me funny, too. Of course, they all may be thinking it's easier than crying, too.

The Problem with Atheism by Sam Harris
by nvrgnbk inthe problem with atheism(this is an edited transcript of a talk given at the atheist alliance conference in washington d.c. on september 28th, 2007).
to begin, id like to take a moment to acknowledge just how strange it is that a meeting like this is even necessary.
the year is 2007, and we have all taken time out of our busy lives, and many of us have traveled considerable distance, so that we can strategize about how best to live in a world in which most people believe in an imaginary god.

The atheist brigades say that biological evolution evidences no sentience even though sentient influences are strongly evidenced in the evolutionary process.
Sentience = The quality or state of being sentient; consciousness (American Heritage)
Anthropomorphism of a natural phenomona like evolution seems odd to me. It's like saying gravity pulls stuff down because the Earth desires it so. Interesting from a poetic standpoint, but not useful from a pragmatic one. Seems superstitious.
For many it is a choice in the end.
At some level, it is a choice for everyone.
Some of us perceive God more clearly than others.
I perceive. I just don't demand that others label what I perceive as God, nor insist that others believe in my perceptions. We perceive something. But since it is an entirely subjective process, we'll never have "proof" of the experience - nor is meaning intrinsic to the experience.
Harris thinks what I believe is complete bunk but it doesn't cost me anything and besides I really relate to it. So just what is his problem here?
If there are atheists trying to shove evolution down our throats, then the problem here is theists stunting us with superstition.
Without a grounding in the Absolute the atheists create a relative world where truth is in the eye of the perceiver.
"Absolute" is a fancy label without much definition here. Meaning of experience, interpretation of scripture, indeed everything related to "God" is highly relative to culture, time and the individual psyche.
Every "Absolute" one might try to raise falls flat under scrutiny, unless a group of people agree to what is "Absolute" - which sounds more like consensus building to me. "Choosing to believe" is a much more honest engagement than "I know the Absolute".

your cell phone is stashed in your purse and it starts ringing.
you plunge your hand in, hoping to grab it and begin the call.

My conscience

Welcome, civics.
After 40+ years of listening to how closed minds cannot receive information, I am very comfortable in waiting for the right opportunity to present itself. The best message given to closed ears makes no impact, and only causes anger.
Sooner or later, opportunities present themselves. People express their own readiness, their own questions, their own concerns. That's the time to support their questioning and concerns. Sometimes they're ready for a lot of info, sometimes they're only ready for a gentle supportive nudge that opens the door for later.
Sometimes they overcompensate later and go into denial about what you've said, or demonize you for apostate words. That's the same kind of risk we're all familier with going out in the field service, so it's not completely unfamilier terriroty, I suppose.
But until the student is ready, the master cannot do much.

If Your Aged Parent Asked U Not To Give Them Blood, Would U Agree?

if your jw parent trusted you to comply with their wishes, would you honor their request?

I would respect my parents wishes. Competent adults have rights over what is done to their bodies.

OK, maybe "losing my religion" is a scripture taken out of context...but it works for me, too!
