  fulltimestudent, it isn't just the Anglosphere, but the voting with your feet effect. The dissidents leave and tend to poison the well in their new country. But after 8 years of George Bush and Barack Obama, I am a little burnt out with strong leaders with their cults of personality. Democracy and freedom are supposed to be a little messy. If you want a cult of personality and a strong leader, why not just have a monarchy? (BTW I think Ethiopia would project a more stable image if the monarchy were to be restored.)

  We don't need someone who can lead, we need someone who can listen to the people and compromise.

  Concerning the Chinese and cultural exchanges, even if neither government will encourage them to settle permanently, with the woman shortage in China, the charms of Ethiopian women, especially in the impoverished towns along the length of the railway, will probably prove irresistable to many.

  my jw sister was over tonight for supper and after a couple of glasses of vino she told me that "today's watchtower study was bullshit" and that one of the 'elite elders' made a comment that bothered her a great deal.. he was apparently at bethel not too long ago and "one of the big-wigs" who was giving a talk said "don't be afraid of dying for the truth brothers" and this jackass was stupid enough to repeat this at the meeting.

  it bothered my sister a great deal and i said to her: "soooo are they going to start passing out the kood-aid or what?

  " she knew exactly what i was talking about and she said "ya, i wondered the same thing.

  you forgot Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Speaking of Ethiopia, they have a lot of similarities with China politically, Socialist in name while Fascist in practice. One difference is that The Ethiopia government loves the Jehovah's Witness religion because JWs stay out of politics. I wonder if the PRC will ever cynically change its tune in that regard.

  JW Disfellowshipping vs. Amish Meidung vs. Bahá'í Covenant-Breaking

  saw an interesting short documentary about a woman who was a born covenant-breaker (which is baha'i for disfellowshipped) because she is the great-granddaughter of baha'ullah whose grandfather disagreed with the leadership, as well as the command that no baha'is should live in israel unless they are working for the universal house of justice (their bethel).

  i also read somewhere that shunning in many amish communities has been watered down to having to eat outside at weddings and other communal events.

  the more comparisons are drawn between jehovah's witnesses and so called false religions, the less they can claim to be the only true religion.

  It was called Bahais In My Backyard. The Bahais made a covenant with Israel to not live there and have their World Headquartered there instead, Their prophet Bahaullah is buried there. The funny thing is that his Great-Granddaughter is an Israeli citizen who has lived in Israel her whole life but is shunned by the Bahais because her grandfather disagreed with the leadership before they made that covenant. Imagine if Brooklyn were a small country and all of Rutherfords descendants lived right next door to the Bethel and they were all disfellowshipped for eternity you might understand the absurdity. She is a born apostate because an Israeli Bahai is an oxymoron. The reasoning of the Bahais is that if they were allowed to live in Israel they would all want to live in Haifa.

  Have you met people in the "world" who are more commited to their christian believes than JWs?

  i met a coworker at my work who was even more commited to his religion then almost anybody i had seen in the jw mids yet.

  whenever we went for lunch, he would do a little prayer first, he didnt care if anybody would take notice of him.

  he does not curse, never!

  as a witness, i knew several men who attempted to grow beards.

  when they did, and attended meetings, it did not take long to be talked to by elders and told, "as spiritual men, they should not display an outward form of rebellion.

  I grew a beard in high school when it was totally out of style. I am glad the 20th century is over and I hope the 21st century will be a bearded one.

  Earn a living for the whole family, fight for your country, but don't act or look patriarchal, don't point out discrimination against men because women have been oppressed for centuries, don't be a homophobe, be a boy toy for older women, the list goes on...

  The beard has a ton of symbolism for me and I wouldn't cut it for the world.

  It would be nice to see the day when a man IS REQUIRED to grow a beard to get a job, just so the baby faces will get a taste of their own medicine.

  If your dad doesn't have a beard you've got two moms.

  i sometimes look at the magazines on jw.org to see what the wt are saying now.

  the latest watchtower is a good old fire and brimstone, armageddon is coming any moment now issue, but it was a short article in the april 2015 awake that caught my eye.

  it features the country of honduras and is quite an informative little read (though failing to mention the very high crime rate in that country).

  There are smaller religions than jws with much larger cultural influence.

  Without Jews there would be no Hollywood, and without Rastafarians there would be no Reggae music, without Zoroastrians there would be no Bollywood, but if the Jehovah's Witnesses disappeared I doubt anyone would notice.
