2 thoughts, dgp pretty much nailed it. we are now going to see dishonest fundementalists claim that somehow what bart erhman said means christianity is true. he said no such thing. he said what the evidence proves, Jesus existed. there no evidence that he rose from the dead, and if you think he believes that, check out his debate on the exact subject vs william lane craig.
my second point is that i find it comical that the fundementalists on the other side will reject what Erhman, a respected scholar and historian says, just like the creationists reject what scientists say about evolution.
one of the greatest examples of this is when "the infidel guy" interviewed Erhman on his show. this is one of the classic examples that both sides of the God issue have extremists who have no interested at all in evidence.

My use of Martyr is in context, but I don't think you have looked carefully enough at what I actually wrote.
thats baffling that you can say that in light of my response, but im not getting into a whole thing about this. i canot see how a christian (Martyr) who believes that pagan gods are the result of demons copying the old testament, and who states that such writers were AFTER theirs (christians), and specificly states he is not saying the same things as those (pagan)writers, then at the same time some how claims the NT writers borrowed from the pagan gods, and its no different. that makes no sense, and its not what he is saying at all.
there isnt really anything else i can say about that. perhaps the term "abusing" the text was strong and insulting, so i apologise for that. i should have said taking it out of context.

i thought you were defending at least part of it because you bring up dionysus.
if you have read Juston Martyr it in its entirety, i dont know how you can conclude that he was admitting or suggesting that the writers of the NT were borrowing from pagan gods. or that they are no different. i mean, did you read chapter 23? how can you reconsile that with what you are saying?

im not an atheist, but i no longer consider myself christian. i will say however that the people(atheists?) who made zeitgeist, go off about the literal genesis, or completly abuse the text of Justin Maryr (sorry cofty, in full context that is not what he is saying) they do themselves a diservice. instead of focusing on the real things that make the bible impossible to reconsile (the genosides ordered by the OT god including the killing of babies, etc) this other BS is just a distraction. when I did the research on the parallels in zeitgiest to Jesus, and found out that the sources they based their movie on completly abused the translation watchtower style of the sources of the stories, as well as used people who have been discredited by all serious scholars, it made me more firm in my belief. it wasent until later that i started to research the genosides in the OT, and other issues that made the bible impossible to be the "perfect inspired word of god" for me. maybe i am a bit PO'd that BS like zeitgiest and people like dan barker made my wake up call take much longer than it needed to. LOL

from all the experiences i read on this site and others, if a wife wants to leave her husband because he turned apostate, the elders will look the other way. its like the best kept secret of the org, you can leave your husband and remarry if they turn apostate. it might not be written down, but you see people time and again posting here about their mates leaving, even sometimes being encouraged to leave by the elders and then remarrying another jw.

my immediate family as well as much of my extended family.
my father and brother are all elders that are used on the circuit and district level.

what gets me every time is all you hear is "God hates a divorce". then there are assembly parts, local needs all about people getting unscriptual divorces and seperations. elders will tell wives who are beaten to go back to the husband and live with the abuse. even when a mate cheats they are encouraged to forgive BUT when it comes to a mate turning apostate, divorce is not only acceptable, but sometimes encouraged by elders or fellow JW's.
its like the dirty little secret, divorce is not ok, unless one turns apostate. there are so many examples of people who turn apostate, and the mate divorces the apostate mate, remarries another jw and its all condoned.
