hello all, i had to start this thread because i am from indiana, although i am not an iu fan, i am much more tolerant of them now that bobby knight is out of there.
i was raised in purdue country, so that is my team, but they bit the big one this year.

and if you read some snarls in between those words, you don't know the half of it.. my wife asked me to go to the memorial last night, and i decided to go if for no other reason than to keep tabs on what's going on.
those who know my story know that my situation is unusual.. just before we left she came to me privately and said that she had something to tell me before i heard it from anyone else.
she knows exactly how i feel about the society, and was scared as to my reaction, and i don't blame her: there's hell to pay.. jeff strebe committed suicide the night before.
So sorry to hear of yet another JW-related tragedy. Every time a family man takes his life (or that of his family), I cringe, thinking that their religious background may have been that of a JW. Too often this year, that feeling has been correct.
The story said

"He appeared not to want contact with people."The action of disfellowshipping often isolates a person, to the point where he may instinctively withdraw from others. After all, all your "friends" inside the organization are taken away from you, and you probably feel like a misfit when it comes to the outside world. You've been told you're unworthy....That may have factored into Strebe's avoidance of people. I don't know, but I fear so.

We have several new posters joining every week and enjoying it immensely. Dutchy and Aunty are two such ones, and they are benefitting from and are contributing meaningfully to this forum. Why? They "got up the nerve".
And I don't recall seeing them being attacked or reproached in any way, shape or manner. People who come here with REAL questions, comments or concerns are usually recognized as genuine and don't raise people's hackles.
It's not a perfect forum. Go see other forums for superficial perfection. Or go to a Kingdom Hall.
People "perceive" us as they wish to. We don't have much control over that, beyond the obvious principle repeatedly propounded by this forum's owner, and that is "be civil". But the vast majority already are.

The fact of the matter is, that charges brought out here (such as those related to child abuse, shunning, refusal of life-extending blood transfusions, etc.) are HONEST concerns that people have. We're not just sitting here throwing darts at the WT Society for our own amusement. People are getting needlessly hurt and misled by the unorthodox, unscriptural and heavy-handed policies of the religious organization run by the WT Society.

So Joe...There was NO emphasis (by the WT Society) on the 1975 date? Can you honestly say the Society heeded the counsel "No man knows the day or hour" and "Don't go beyond the things written".
The reality is that the Society kept that date "front and center" in order to stir up anticipation among its members. If you wish to endlessly forgive the WT Society and to continue to follow it, despite the fact that it ignored Scriptural counsel, then fine.
Does the Society ignore scriptural counsel now, today, since 1975? Keep reading this discussion board and www.freeminds.org for the answer to that.
I was once like you, thinking that the Society was the ultimate source of all truth. But they've goofed way too often to live up to their claim of being "God's sole channel of truth for mankind".

There is SO MUCH documentation about 1975 from the Society's own publications, it's hard to know where to begin. I gotta run for now, but I found the following in an earlier post. I'm borrowing from a post from Marvin Shilmer, who did the actual research.
