  The Clergy vs. Jehovah's Witnesses?

  after i left the organization, one of the things that surprised me the most, was the clergy of christendom and their view of jehovah's witnesses.

  i thought as a jw, we were the 'center' of their attention, and they not only hated us, but were afraid of all the things we published about them.. nothing could have been farther from the truth!

  most ministers hardly knew anything about witnesses.

  Never mind the Clergy of Christendom. Not even the ordinary member of their congregations gives the JW's a thought. Just recently a member of the church I attend was telling me she worked with a JW, and wanted information on them. So I gave her some she could look at. When I saw her again she said she had no idea about some of the things they believed. Things like no Trinity, no Hell, no immortality of the soul, she didn't realise JW's didn't believe these things. The only thing she knew was that they didn't take blood.

  When you consider the JW's are always boasting about how they "publish the good news" etc, all the millions of pieces of literature they have printed. All the hours spent going from door to door, over the past 100+ years. Yet the average person still has no idea what they believe.

  Subscriptions to the Afake & Witchtower magazines!

  do any of you remember this... when one subscribed to the awake or watchtower magazines, they would, back in south africa, come in a cardboard roll... kinda like the kitchen roll cardboard thingies... then later they would come folded in half lengthways.

  well, where i am going with this is here... it became sort of a status symbol in the congo to have one of these rolled mags and later the folded ones and one would make a point of straightening them out (despite them being underlined to death and well used) to show the fact that you subscribe to the magazines!

  did any of you do something similar?

  When I subscribed in the early 1970's the magazines used to come rolled with just a brown paper wrapper on them. The ends used to be exposed as they were sent by what was called "printed paper" post, which was cheaper than if it was fully wrapped.

  Back then a few JW's subscribed, especially the Elders, because you usually got the magazines before the congregation did. So you were one up on them, because you knew what was the latest information or teaching.

  MY SON'S LEAVING HOME!!!!!!!!

  my older son, karl, is leaving home.

  it could be this coming sunday but, if not, definitely sometime during next week.. karl has been a wonderful son and friend.

  leaving watchtower was made so much easier because of him - and his decision to exit undoubtedly prompted my wife, claire, to take a look at the damning evidence herself!

  I'm seen to many good clever young people, lives messed up, because of the WT view about education and universities etc.

  the witness answers it and someone is on the other end, but they are speaking in french.

  I'm sure that when were all JW's that we believed many of these stories. But there was never any real facts behind them. It was alway "some sister or brother" or this or that happened. Never any names or places. The one about the sister calling on the rapist/murderer etc. I have heard the same story from Mormons, Moonies and Christians.

  Know what you mean about the magazines.

  I recently went to see someone who was having a "bible study" with JW's, she was getting a bit suspcious of some things. She had a couple of the latest magazines there. I had seen the odd one since I stopped getting them 6 years ago. On looking through them it was like I had never left, the wording, the articles, the pictures were just the same. On looking through the study book "What Does the Bible Really Teach?" again its wording and phrases haven't altered. Important subjects were just glossed over or dealt with in a couple of paragraphs. The subject of the "cross" was dealt with in three short paragraphs. It came across as "Jesus didn't die on a cross because we say so" apart from the usual juggling with the word "stauros" no in depth discussion was made. I thought, with the evidence I now know I could get an hours discussion out of it easily. But if you are dealing with someone who doesn't know the real evidence then you can just gloss over it.

  Better stop there I feel one of those moments were I'll just go on and on about them.

  What Christian religions do not believe in a burning hell?

  i am interested in finding out if christianity still teaches a burning hell.

  it is my understanding that they are starting to drop this teaching as just a figurative place.

  is that true?.

  I seem to recall that the Church of England a few years ago, declared that a "fiery hell" was only figurative.

  without attacking anyone for their beliefs, feel free to state what you believe in right now.. personally, i still believe in a higher power, a creator, call him jehovah if you wish, a god that will put things back right eventually.

  Today I was un-shunned.....

  not typical of my sil to do more than just a casual greeting and look nervous when i run across her somewhere.

  last time i met her in public at a restuarant she tried to weave across the room and hope i did not see her [fear of eating with an apostate i suppose.].

  today the opposite - i came in to the restuarant and she was there, seated alone.

  How deep did you search to finally quit being a JW?

  in my case, i never did much research or read alot of apostate literature to get out of the jw religion.

  all i looked at was their heart and how they treated me.

  that alone spoke for itself..

  Maybe we should also ask "What made us, and When did we start to search".

  Personally I was at a time when I couldn't understand the way I was treated, by "Jehovah's loving people" at a time I needed help and support.

  It was February 1997 and I had been a JW for 25 years, I was in the local public library browsing the shelves. When I spotted a book called "Awake to the Watchtower". My first thought was another of those books running down the organisation. But something made me pick it up and look at it. I opened it probably half way through and started reading. It caught my attention and I spent the next two hours sitting there reading it. Strangely as I read I wasn't thinking "Thats a lie, thats wrong" etc. But felt that I was having my eyes and mind opened. Doubts about some WT teachings that I had, especially about Jesus Christ, became clear. This then led me to the Internet, which the library had. One of the first websites I looked at was Freeminds and eventually this forum. I spent the next two years researching the WT learning things about its past that I had never come across before. Then one evening I was at the Kingdom Hall, August 1999, when it hit me that I no longer believed what they were saying. That was my last meeting. I eventually disassociated in September 2001 which meant I ended 30 years of being a JW.

  Is the first year really the hardest?????

  i have been married a year and a half, and everyone says the first year is the hardest.

  well, the crappyness seems to be creeping right on into the second year.

  i thought it was suppossed to get easier each year.

  How many 'real" friends did you ever really have in ther "truth'

  sure we got to know a lot of people, we knew a lot more people then the average person, but how many real friends did we ever have?

  a friend that we could trust, that we could confine in.

  i can say i had just one, bro x and even then i still had to be careful, bro x is an elder now and he tells me that im the only real friend hes ever had, he cant freely talk to anyone.
