  What "Unwritten Rules" Did Your Congregation Have?

  i knew of a hall that allowed only white shirted speakers on the platform for sunday public talks!

  when a visiting speaker did not wear the official white shirt he was either told that he couldn't give the talk or he could change shirts,as the hall kept a variety of sizes, just in case of an emergency!!!

  i don't make this up.

  ABSOLUTE MUST -Brothers wear suit coats reading at group, doing mics, platform etc no matter how hot

  I keep hearing the one about "white shirts only" but never came across it here in my area of England. In all my time as a JW even when a Min Servant, giving talks etc. I NEVER wore a white shirt. Usually blue, deep red and a pink one that went well with my suit when I gave a Public Talk. At one time the only "rule" was no loud patterned ties, only plain colours. That was until a Circuit Overseer who came who wore the loudest patterned ties you could imagine. No one said a word after that. Suits coats were worn if you were on platform,or doing mics. Otherwse you could take them off if sitting in the audience. At the book groups if it was hot we often took our jackets off , even the conductor. Beards were taken as forbidden. Though I remember attending a Elders/Min Servants school and seeing a couple of Elders there with beards. I know of a brother who all his time as a JW wore a goatee. But then I have heard an Elder tell a brother who had grown a beard that in no circumstance would he work with him on field service. I have often found that these petty little rules were usually made up by the local Elders own personal tastes and views.

  If I remember rightly we had similar case in Britain many years ago, also involving a railway union.

  It involved three men who refused to go on strike over want they considered a political issue, not one about work or pay.

  One of the men was a JW.

  The union was going to throw them out of the union over it.

  The three if I recall said it was their right to decide whether to strike over a political issue, that was in conflict with their views or beliefs.

  They went to the European Court over it ... they won.

  but, after a chat with the po of our congo, we felt a little better with the knowledge that we are not alone on the inside.

  Long before I left, which is 6 years ago now.

  I had two Elders unbeknown to each other show me from scripture that Jesus was God. One said he wasn't sure about the Holy Spirit yet.

  Both were in their 70's at the time. One had been a JW for about 50 years, the other had been brought up a JW, his parents had both been of the anointed from the 1920's on.

  On both occasions it was in private at their homes. At the time I never said a word just sort of nodded my head. I wasn't going to admit to thinking along same lines. I wasn't that stupid. Also if I said anything who would believe me no "two witnesses" and both were highly respected Elders.

  I think what held them back was both of their familes their wives and children were all strong JW's and they didn't want to hurt them.

  Both died not long afterwards one from a brain tumour, the other from cancer.

  hi.. just wondering what it was that first made you realise that jws didnt have the absolute "truth"?

  was there a specific event/turning point for you or was it a moment of enlightenment?.

  As has been mentioned - the total lack of love.

  When I and my family needed love and support, through my depression and attempted suicide (1996). What we got was me being reproved by a Judicial Committee. Eventually the the Elders getting my JW wife to get me out the home because I was a "spiritual danger" to the family. But no thought given to my "spiritual health" at the time. The only "help" was attend the meetings , go on field service. I have often said if they had said to me "We'll help you and your famly get through this" I could well still be a JW now. But instead people I had known for 25 years turned their backs on me. I think I was in some form of shock for a few months. because wasn't it supposed to be "Jehovahs loving organisation" all those nice articles on how they looked after each other etc, I had read over the years.

  Then one day I came across a book called "Awake to the Watchtower" in local library, picked it up thinking another of those books having a go at the WT. Started to read it, was still reading it 2 hours later. That book started me on the trail of looking into the WT. The library had internet access, so you can guess what happened next.

  Then in August 1999 sitting in a Service Meeting I realised I no longer believed it all, that was my last meeting. I eventually DA'd in September 2001. Which meant since then my JW wife and two JW daughters have no had contact with me. Though two other children who were JW's DA'd also at the time and three others never became JW's.

  But as I said above if it wasn't for that lack of love at the beginning of it all. I would never had done any research on the WT and discovered what I now know. Again, as I have seen often, doing what they think is right, often backfires on them.

  Conspiracy against the Watchtower

  here is one question that has been bothering me for quite some time.

  do you think a revolution, so to speak, within the organization is possible?

  in other words, can any conspiracy against the watchtower succeed?

  Interesting point.

  It would have to be something that really shook the whole organisation.

  Maybe a denunciation of certain teachings by senior WT members, maybe even those of the Governing Body. In such a way that no one could turn round and say they were "apostates".

  Thus make the rank and file realise what they were really part of and how they had been deceived.

  Whats the funniest thing you've ever seen happen in the KH?

  i remember being a kid and we didnt have the fancy fabric seats, they were plastic stackable chairs all set out in the usual lines.. an elderly bro, rather rotund, farted, the noise so loud and thundering against the plastic seat!

  or the time when i must have been about 7, my dad brought his bible study family to their first ever meeting, i had to sit on mums knee.

  i recall giving the daughter of the new family a very vigorous v sign during the meeting.

  One 10 yr old boy answering during a Watchtower study.

  Was supposed to say that "Israelite sons learnt to do their fathers SECULAR work."

  Instead he said "Israelite sons learnt to do their fathers SEXUAL work."

  The congregation just fell part laughing.

  My own daughter when around 12 yrs old during a group meeting, read something that should have said that "Adam and Eve came out the bushes NAKED.

  Instead she read it as "Adam and Eve came out the bushes KNACKERED."

  The group conductor had trouble carrying on because of laughing, as we all did.

  What did you get told off for?

  i wanted to become an unbaptized publisher, i'd started helping out at the congregation and i was enjoying the responsibilities that any young lad would want to get (as a jw) like doing microphones in absence of brothers and occasionally while they were there as well, before my friends who weren't making 'progress'.. anyway, i went for my unbaptized publisher goal and i got there in the end - making the truth my own, but i was held back by a month or two because some clowns reported me for swearing and a few other things and i have a feeling that was stepdad and/or some of my so called friends jealous of my progress, because immediately after they all became unbaptized publishers .

  so...yeah that was mine, i know people have a lot better/worse however you view it but i was so upset by that.

  maybe i was swearing, maybe i wasn't at the time i can't remember but i do remember both stepdad/friends swearing on occasions.. as a really young child, i remember mum crying like she often did because she was depressed (what happened to jehoobers happy people) and around a corner outside an elder who i used to like told me it was my fault mum was upset?

  Should Christians be involved in politics?

  religions that say they are the sole true path to salvation need to concentrate on their unique points to prove they alone are acceptable to god.

  for this reason jws seem to use the point that they do not get involved in politics as proof that they are special.

  in the old testament there are a number of examples of followers of jehovah being involved in politics, so obviously it can't be that bad.

  This subject was brought up about a year ago. Thats when I first posted the information that started this thread, by fedor(?)

  The person who told me knew my JW wife and her mother and father many years ago. He was in one of the local congregations.

  Can't say to much about him as he is technically still a JW, but fading. He was involved in installing computer system in London Bethel. I get the occasional email off him, as he is still in contact with old JW friends. Some of who I also know.

  What the WT is doing is nothing new. Even the firm I work for, a very large oil company, monitors all computer traffic as do most firms these days. So what the WT is doing is basically quite simple. They may not be able to pinpoint a person by their IP address. Just get an idea the area they are in. Even I can do that. But who knows what systems can be used these days. If when I use my mobile phone it can be pinpointed within yards, then who is to say that computers can't be.

  There are 6.7 million publishers, so it is not too fluffed.

  And once again, WHERE are we reading that there are 6.7 million publishers? I find it very hard to believe

  The 2006 report there was an average of 6,491,773 a 1.6% over 2005.

  If the increase is the same for 2007 that would make the total 6,595,641

  A 2% increase would give 6,621,208

  But thats only if none have left over the past year.
