a few weeks back, in the midst of the haiti tragedy, much discussion took place in cyberland about the tolerance [or indeed the insistence on] suffering by a loving god.
the furor over haiti has settled a bit [as unfortunately most tragedy is wont to do far too quickly in the human mind], but this persistent matter continues to chew at my subconscience.

I don't see the logic of this statement. You've started some threads with global warming in its title. Does that mean you've asserted it's real? No, you think belief in it could be harmful. I guess the same is true for AK-Jeff's choice to put God in his thread title.

of course, i realize that "respect" isn't the best word here because religious fundamentalists are hardly worthy of respect.
If it's indeed true that all fundamentalists share as unifying principles that all others go to Hell, I don't see how this fits in with the "scientific" mind. Science is by principle anti-dogmatic.

I haven't abandoned the christian faith, I think the NT still contains a powerful message of freedom. I've left christian organizations because of all the reasons mentioned above.
