Disfellowship?????????????????????

today's study topic included disfellowship.

i'm a little confused i was told that the only way you can be disfellowshipped was if you did something you knew went agains jehovah and would not repent for it.

but the only person you can repent to is jehovah......... then i was told that the elders can however "keep the flock pure" b/c if jehovah is not happy with the congregation he can take his holy spirit away.

I guess I have to say that the term 'only impertfect' just doesn't bring a very great measure of comfort to me anymore.

As for 'against jehovah's Witnesses', my daughter and her husband and my sister-in-law and her husband are JW's and they are very fine people.

My response to this, for what it is worth, is that there may have been a time when JW's contributed to advances in medicine, the principles of religious freedom, increased rights for women and children, economic gains for JW's and their families, but that all ended decades ago. The GB gets richer while the members get poorer, subject to more abuse and even die in numbers that make the numbers of the victims of the People's Temple pale into insignificance.

Do the 'success' stories outweigh the crying of the dead the dying and the maltreated. It would appear that the rank and file JW's and the 30,000 newly baptized JW's and even those studying today to be baptized apparently think so. "Just as in the days of Noah..."

<sigh>

Why No Disfellowshipping Before 1952?

why was there no official arrangement before 1952 to disfellowship people?

was there a different procedure with a different name?

was no one committing disfellowshipping offenses?

This doesn't exactly answer the question, but it gives insightful information concerning the subject. There might be enough infor here for some of the other posters to fill in the gaps. So the story goes...

Years ago, near the mid-thirties, a Jehovah's Witness (I think they were Witnesses by then) named Olin Moyle became a member, donated nearly everything he owned, and donated his legal expertise to the Witnesses. Just before 1940, he resigned as a Winess, apparently deciding this wasn't for him. Rutherford then aparently denounced Moyle privately and publicly. Then Moyle sued the Witnesses and won, first in the original court and then later on appeal. (tho the amount was reduced) Never heard if he got his money, I mean actually GOT it.

Anyway, shortly after that is when disfellowshipping becan to be a prescribed policy. I heard, and am inclined to believe, that these two events are related.

Tho the GB claims the DF'ing policy was about 'cleaness' the more I learn about the 'Society's' (did I say that...ack!) it is my personal belief that they are being less than truthful.

I don't think dear Olin Moyle even made it into the Proclaimers book, and hardly a Witness even knows the name.

And this surprises...whom?

Help for a non-Witness

i'm looking for anyone who is married to a non-witness, or someone who themselves is not a witness but is married to one.

i'm in desperate need of advice and don't know where else to turn.

i myself am not a witness but my girlfriend is and our religous differences are forcing us apart.

Perhaps you can decide not to have children for a while after marriage. Say a couple of years. It might be fun to spend that time together just the two of you anyway.

Help for a non-Witness

i'm looking for anyone who is married to a non-witness, or someone who themselves is not a witness but is married to one.

Religion is a personal choice everyone must make for themselves, if she's choosing her religion over you (that's what it sounds like)there isn't much you can do, and maybe there isn't much you should do.

You could try waiting her out, but even if you succeed, if you 'win' you could be in for a long frustrating haul in between. Why is this person a Witness in the first place?

Sorry if I don't sound very positive, but couples have been struggling with such thorny issues for thousands of years. Join the club.

why did some of us get taken in by the post from carlo?

because as absurd as the correspondence was, there was a ring of truth to it.

while it would be unlikely that anyone would be counseled to forget about their new grand baby by a co or elders, i can see some self-righteous witnesses taking the attitude that shunning their knocked up daughter and the resultant baby would be the most loving thing to do.. how sad this is.

higher education

first post.. i am in college studying engineering.

does anyone else here in college feel like they have to work twice as hard as everyone else in the cong.

to avoid the assumption that higher ed.

I did what the Society said and put God's kingdom first. I woke up one day, I was in my late thirties, tired and worn out from manual, low paid labor, my 4 children grew up with hand-me-downs and day-old bread (not that there's anything wrong with that, but a choice would have been nice)and they were on the road to doing the same.

At age 40 I graduated from nursing school, I have my license and am making better money, enough to buy a computer, dsl service and come play on this board. I have helped two of my children through school, and the other 2 start hopefully this winter/coming spring.

You would not want to go through life as I did and my children almost did, I can almost bet. I hope you stay in school, and maybe make some friends there as well. God gave you a brain, feel free to use it.
