If we go back to the beginning, we shall find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that fancy, enthusiasm, or deceit adorned them; that weakness worships them; that credulity preserves them and that custom, respect and tyranny support them in order to make the blindness of men serve their own interests. If the ignorance of nature gave birth to gods, the knowledge of nature is calculated to destroy them.

Have we seen the last of the world's major religions?
by truthseeker indo you think that with global media and the internet that it would ever be possible for a new world religion to arise or a messiah of some sort?.
christianity got its start in 33 a.d.. islam got its start in the seventh century.. the most recent movements are the sects of christianity, such as the mormons and jws which had their start in the latter half of the nineteenth century.. even scientology which got it start in the 1950s began in an age where investiagtive journalism and global media coverage were not around to test mr. hubbards claims for truth.. there will always be individuals who believe that they are the messiah but i'm talking more along the lines of a religion that could get as big as islam or christianity.. .

IMHO... what does race have to do with beauty? You miss the point entirely... if both brothers were from Burma, they would find women with the elongated necks beautiful... while you and I would not ...
If you were referring to an individual's taste or preferences that is another topic entirely...
The same thing happens with food... think about it.

IMHO... I think I answered the 'why' in my post... it is because you are TAUGHT what to find beautiful and what NOT to find beautiful...
"Tu entorno define tu concepto de la belleza...." this means "Your surrounding/bringing up defines your concept of beauty"

The concept of beauty is purely cultural. In Burma (Myanamar) they put rings on the little girls necks because the ultimate beauty is to have these enlongated necks (up to the point that they cannot take them off anymore, the neck muscle are so distended that they cannot hold the head upright anymore).
The Surma, a pastoral people, originate from the remote plateaus of southwestern Ethiopia, near the border of Sudan. Both males and females of the Surma tribes shave their heads as a mark of beauty. The women wear lip plates; their lower lips are pierced and stretched as ever-larger plates are inserted over time. The larger the plate, the more appealing the woman.
In the Caribbean, women with nice rounded butts (can you say J-Lo?) are the ultimate sex-appealing beauties while in Europe they are considered fat; extremely skinny girls with long legs are called 'garzas feas' which means 'ugly herons', but these are the ultimate american and european beauties. Piercings and tatoos are another example.
So, just as it happens with food, beauty is a learned concept... and it IS in the eye of the beholder whether you like it or not...

Human Sacrifice---The Ultimate Gift To God
by minimus inthe aztecs were very much into wanting to please the gods, so they sacrificed animals and humans to appease their god(s).
the mayans did the same.. the assyrians and other "pagans" were known to perform human sacrifices.
throughout history, people have killed innocent victims---all in the name of trying to please god.. when nations go to war with one another, they praise those who give the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Sincere question for Christians
by sir82 inhere's something i've never been clear on, being raised as a jw: what is the standard, "orthodox christian" if you will, teaching with regard to where the soul goes after death for each of the following 3 scenarios:.
1) a 3 month old baby, born to believing, saved christian parents, dies;.
2) a 3 month old baby, born to non-christian parents, dies;.

I do not think he 'swallowed' the Horus Story, inkling... I think what he was trying to say is that most people would never even consider as true an egyptian myth like that but have no problem believing the same 'storyline' for Jesus...
To me his point is valid... if you believe the BS from the bible and jewish lore, you might as well believe the BS from any so called sacred book from anyone... and be at least an 'equally ridiculous' Religulous
