Watch out. Ray Franz got in trouble with the GB for using Bible commentaries when he wrote the Aid book, even though his Uncle Fred Franz pointed him toward them and they were available in the WT's own Bethel library. Logic means nothing to a zealot.

I think I may have accidentily pitted the POs wife against her husband...
by cognac inwell, you know how the whole thing came out about only using the "society's literature" came out a few months ago?
well, a few days later i went up to the po to basically tell on myself that i used strongs concordance and exactly which website i go to for a lot of my research.
he said that was fine and that the society was just avoiding people spending hours on non wt literature just either wasting there time or trying to prove the society wrong.... ok, so fast forward to this past weekend, i was over his house with my husband for dinner.

Went to a JW "funeral" on Saturday
by Dorktacular inmy brother called me late on the 13th to let me know that a friend of ours - who is no longer a jw - called him and said that his dad was being flown by helicopter to the hospital because he collapsed at home and had no pulse.
they took my friend's dad off life support on valentine's day and he died.
well, i was debating whether or not to go to the funeral because i have no desire to hang around a bunch of jws or set foot in a kindumb hall again.

My uncle was not a JW but took their magazines when they came to the door out of respect for my mother. My mother is a JW and my father is a JW by osmosis and my dad made the arrangements. So, a functionally illiterate JW did the funeral at the funeral home and talked about how much Elmer loved to read the magazines about Jesus and Jehovah. I had to pop up and tell him, truthfully, that Elmer couldn't read! Not a word, not even a road sign! That shut him up.

SO proud... Wife brought COC as reading material on a road trip...
by Robert7 inwe had a little family roadtrip last weekend, and my wife brought coc to read in the car!
she read quite a bit of it... .
what was great is she really sees it as not the truth.

I am so happy for you! I was stunned by COC and I read it well after I left the "truth." What I will advise is, whatever you decide, decide it together. You will need each other's support. Either fade together or DA together.

by Mary ini'm not sure if this has been posted yet, so i took the liberty of scanning a copy.
here is the figures for the 2007 service year report.
interesting that over 9,000 partook at the memorial last year when the numbers should be going down.

Yes but where is the post about how much they paid in settlements to sexual abuse survivors? Or for legal counsel so they could screw over the victims again?

I AM ...
by MOG ini did a little research (new american bible) on this, and i found that when jesus calls himself "i am" in john 8:58 and was to get stoned because he was putting himself equal to god, due because in exodus 3:14, god tells moses "i am sent you"...but in the jwbible it states this entirely different.. .
john8;58, and i am is substituted for "i have been', then in exodus 3;14, "i am" is substituted for "i shall prove to be what i shall prove to be"..i have gone through several bibles again and again..and each one is the same in this accord, but not the jwbible.. .
it makes sense that i am should be kept in place since jesus was being stoned for using that same phrase - confirmed by hurling of the stones, but then in exodus in the jw, not even the same phrase in used...inconsistent .

MOG, I'm going to quote a couple of paragraphs from an excellent book called Scripture: Nourished by the Word by Margaret Nutting Ralph, Ph.D., Loyola Press. From Chapter 5, beginning with page 98:
"John's Gospel is full of 'I Am' statements made by Jesus. Each of these statements is high Christology in that each is claiming that Jesus is God. 'I Am' is an allusion to the name that God revealed to Moses at the burning bush: 'I Am who Am.' Each time Jesus is pictured making an 'I Am' statement, John is claiming Jesus' divinity and his oneness with God the Father.
"John was not claiming that the words he attributed to Jesus in his Gospel were words that the historical Jesus said. Rather, John placed on Jesus' lips long theological sermons that explained the truths that the Church understood at the end of the first century. These long theological discourses reinforced the Christology that was taught at the intentional level of John's allegories."
The author goes on to review the story of the Wedding at Cana and the subsequent conversation with Nicodemus and John's account of Jesus' passion and death.
This book is inexpensive (less than $10) and available on Amazon.com. I highly recommend it.

I have a friend in Raleigh, NC, who has a business selling JW literature. If you're interested, email me and I'll give you her contact info. She's never been a JW just finds them fascinating, kind of like a train wreck you can't look away from. She's been a great source of info for me.

We really like the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition. We also have the Revised Standard Version with Apocrypha, which is a protestant edition. We have tons of bibles and compare them to each other often and seem to always default to the RSV-Catholic. Many, many people have recommended the Jerusalem Bible to us and it's probably the only one we've not purchased yet. The recommendations from people I trust the most are for the RSV and the Jerusalem Bibles.
Avoid the NIV and the Living Bible. Both are written with a strongly evangelical slant and have sloppy scholarship.
We were recently given the Recovery Bible and had to laugh. It's a version written by a group that says the Church went underground at Jesus' death and this newly formed group has just been guided by God's spirit to recover the true translation and true meaning of the scriptures in this new Bible. No other religion until them has been blessed with the understanding given by the Holy spriit. Sounds an awful lot like the thinking behind the NWT to me!

Why Aren't There Windows in the Newer Kingdom Halls?
by StAnn ini've driven by several newer kh's in the past few years and noticed that none of them have even so much as one window.
just double doors on the front (with no windows) and a solid door on the back.
what's up with that?

First, I must say that even when I attended the DC's (haven't attended in over a decade), each congregation was assigned a section in which to sit. And we had to bring brooms and dust pans to clean up our section each evening.
Anyway, the rest of this stuff sounds too absurd to be true. Is this all really true? What's their justification for forcing you to stay inside all the time? Why can't you go out for lunch or purchase items from the vending machines?

The Slave is sooo concerned about Great Crowd
by senora inso yesterday i bump into a jw i knew since i was a little girl.
so she says to me... at our last local needs the brother said that the faithful slave is soooo worried about the great crowd... so i was like why?
and she says.... because the great crowd is so diisobedient, they just don't listen and the great tribulation is upon us and they are worried about how the gc is going to make it if they are so disobedient.. i felt like screaming.. did they ever think for a second that the gc is sick and tired of them making all of these crazy demands on people's lives who are adults and but yet not allowed to make decisions for themselves or think for themselves?

Maybe if the FDS would allow the GC to partake of a little wine at the Memorial, they'd cheer up and fall in line. I mean, how does the FDS think they're going to effectively rule over the GC from heaven if they can't do it while they're still here on Earth?
