Jethro Tull - Your Favorite Songs and Albums from this Group ?
by flipper ingrowing up, jethro tull was one of my favorite groups as they had a great mix of rock , celtic mix , and great guitar from martin barre and ian anderson on flute was arguably one of the greatest flute players in rock n' roll .
as an interesting side note : my wifes 15 minutes claim to fame was when her ex-husband and her in the 1980's sold fish to markets , her ex-husband called ian anderson on the phone to see how he did salmon farming and talk about the fish business.
weird, huh?

Movie Comparisons
by lancelink inseveral days ago i was watching the movie the shawshank redemption and i really got to thinking how much this movie ties in with people who are jws, and deciding what to do with their life.
i was discussing this point with my wife tonight, and it was quite shocking how many people we knew/know who fit into one of these categories.
andy: people who have been in the organization for years and finally look at things realistically and decide to get out.

You're quite right. This is a good comparison. And notice Brooks killed himself rather than learn to adapt to a new world.

Are you safety conscious? Come on girls, read it!
by Pioneer Spit...oh, i mean Spirit ini'm writing this because of a conversation i had with a co-worker who made it plain that she is anti-gun, 'guns kill people', yada yada.
she doesn't know that my gun is on me everyday, within just feet of her during the day, she still doesn't.
i'm writing this because i have seen a trait that's common to the anti-gun crowd, and it's a scary one.

I don't carry a gun and don't allow them in my house. I'm afraid the children will get into them. One little slip up on my part and someone could die. I'm also afraid to have a gun around because there are certain times of the month when I might actually be tempted to use it "inappropriately" in a hormone-induced rage!
But my dad has guns and my husband and many others in my family are hunters. I've always thought it would be fun to learn to target shoot.
I took a self-defense class. In that class, they advised that women carry an umbrella, like a golf umbrella, with a fiberglass shaft. If you're attacked from behind with the "muggers grab," you can jam the sharp point of the umbrella into the attackers leg, foot, what have you and break free. Also, you can hold it out in front of you in case of knife attack. The attacker may be able to slash your arms but he won't be able to slash your throat. The biggest use for the umbrella is that, if someone is picking someone to attack, they'll see your umbrella and, if it's a rainy day, be able to figure out quickly that you're carrying it for self-defense. They'll move on to an easier target.
Just a little non-lethal self-defense advice.

Congrats! The first time I voted was in the 1988 primaries. On my way into the polling location, I kept expecting this big hand from heaven to come down and smack me. When I came out of the building after voting, I felt so proud and so liberated that I started to cry.
It's a great feeling. Enjoy your liberty!

Yes, he should have resigned. He should have resigned more quickly. I find it so sad that his poor wife is standing there by his side and he's holding her up to public humiliation. That poor woman's face is all you need to look at to see what damage Spitzer has done.
And saying that people who aren't satisfied at home will go elsewhere is ludicrous. Look at Winona Ryder. She could afford to buy her clothes. She wanted the thrill of stealing them. Spitzer seems to be a thrill seeker, too.
One of the things I'm not hearing from anyone here is that his man took at least three oaths: one to his wife to love her and be faithful to her until death; as a lawyer, to uphold the law; and as governor, to conduct himself in a manner that best serves the needs of the people of New York. He has broken all of his oaths. Obviously, this man lacks integrity and does not deserve the public's trust.
Just proves my personal belief that all men are dogs. (Sorry, guys.)

Do You Ever Fear The Jehovah's Witnesses???
by minimus inare you completely devoid of fear regarding jws in your life at this point?

I don't think the word fear is the emotion I feel. I still have relatives in the WT and want to be respectful, even though they're not, because I want to leave the door open for them in case they ever decide to leave. I think once my mother dies, one of my brothers might leave. So I try to be polite to JWs when I see them, as they all know my family, and I'm not "in their face" with abuse stories, etc. I guess I feel like the life I live is so much happier than the lives they are living and I want them to see this and maybe envy it so they'll want to experience life outside of the WT. Thus, I feel it is important not to project a hateful attitude when I meet them. So, I don't fear them and I do find them annoying but I try to to be nice and remain approachable for them, just in case of a defection. I've already had one brother leave the WT and he immediately called me and apologized for how he had treated me. His wife told me it made him feel terribly guilty that I was kind and loving toward him even though he was nasty to me. I'm trying to use the same approach in case my other brother decides to leave. I'm not fearful of JWs but I'm not comfortable around them, either.

Why are Pedophile attracted to JWs?
by MMae inbadboy raised the above question in another thread.
i was wondering how much jw training and/or fear of god played a role in jw childrens' victimization.
these are my comments:.

NonD - Excellent point. A big part of the vulnerability of JW children is the feeling of security they have within the org. Which makes it all the more tragic that the org is not working harder to protect them.
A recent AP investigation says it's not exaggerating to say there is probably at least one sexual predator working in every school in the US. People will go through college and get a teaching degree in order to have access to children in their jobs. Some people are just very sick.

JW's and Homeschooling
by superman inin the mid-to-late 90's i remember the new trend was that a lot of the people that were jw's started pulling their kids out of regular public school and started homeschooling them.
the absolute worst were the kids who had been homeschooled from kindergarten all the way until they graduated.
those poor kids were the most weird, unsocial, naive, sheltered, unadjusted, and uneducated kids i'd ever met.

Oh, two more things. I have two JW nephews who were homeschooled. It was a disaster, only because their parents are unintelligent idiots. They should never have homeschooled anyone. They are socially retarded and academically retarded.
However, given how hard it is to be a JW child in public school, I wish my neice (different sibling) were homeschooled. She's being tormented at public school because of religion. It's very sad. She'll come out of school with major emotional problems, IMO.

My oldest son went through the public schools and did very well. I homeschool my two youngest. You really have to consider each child's needs. My oldest would have been miserable at home. My youngest two hated public school and love being home. I don't homeschool for ideology's sake. My youngest are handicapped and medically fragile. Being in public school with lots of other kids, they were always sick and always having seizures. We network with other homeschool families so there is plenty of socialization. Also, the whole "socialization" concept can be better if the kids are at home because they have to learn to socialize with people of various ages. At school, they're in a big group of others the same age they are. They don't learn how to interact well with people of all ages.
In addition to purchasing curriculum, I also get lots of things from our local university library system. Because they offer teacher education, they have all kinds of great stuff like human anatomy kits, science kits, microscopes, and unit studies that can be checked out. We have a great weather kit that we're using right now to study meteorology and a math "bingo" kit that is lots of fun.
I will admit, though, that my kids are my whole life. I don't have time for much else. Homeschooling is all consuming. I'm happy this way but I don't think most people are. And my kids are thriving, which is the goal.
BTW, I used to work in a college library and we had several students who had been homeschooled. They were much better educated than the public school kids. In fact, many colleges, including Harvard and Yale, are now courting homeschoolers because the good ones are often so much better prepared than public school kids.

I read the whole thing. All this "nominal church" and "anointed" stuff is silly. The OP acts like just a few christians have existed hither and yon until recently, that's nonsensical. Jesus said where two or more are gathered in his name, there he'll be. Sounds like Jesus said right off that it's not denomination-specific.
