I knew two different elders that proffessed similar opinions on disfellowshipping. Both are now disfellowshipped for apostasy (not for this issue specifically).

Are active JW's seeing the light?
by boyzone ini ask this because i had a strange experience this week.
for a brief bit of background knowledge i'm being shunned like most on here, but i see witnesses every day in my place of work and at the school gate, there's no avoiding them, and like many of you, i've found it really hard to get over the hurt and heartache this has caused.. yesterday my mum (an active witness) went into hospital to have a tumor removed (successfully) as i'm the only daughter nearby to help, the other witnesses were asking the elders what they were supposed to do if they wanted to visit my mum and i was at her bedside, should they talk to me or turn round and go out again.. one elder said to do that would be utterly ridiculous, of course i should be spoken to.
he was very annoyed even at the suggestion.

Who's your favorite Devil?
by Twitch ink, just for fun,.... i was watching the movie prophecy the other day and viggo mortenson's portrayal of lucifer was rather good imo.
i thought of another movie i saw, constantine where peter stormare played the same part, somewhat differently of course but a well done portrayal nonetheless.
so, who's your favorite devil?

Atheism - The next and final logical step
by sam_sane_now init is with great pleasure that i have found this forum, being an ex jw myself.
after leaving when i was 17 i still held some belief in the notion of a "god," even though i didn't believe in jw teachings, then when i was about 21 and thought about it properly; i realised that evolution is the only real alternative to all religion.
when you get to this point its very liberating to see that its not just jw's that are clouding and brainwashing peoples minds, but all religion, whether organised or not.

Welcome SSN! You are a thinker after my own heart. There are many atheists here. I hate to combine your welcome thread with a loaded philosophical discussion, but since it's already been done, I'll quote the great Richard Dawkins. When asked how to combat the perception that atheists just think they're smarter than religious people, he said: "Well of course we're smarter!"
Don't pull your punches. The world needs reason.

Atheist in U.S. poll 4% ------ Atheist on JWD 90 % ?
by caliber in( one recent post indicated this 90% figure) .
i don't wish to debate the pro's and con's of atheism, just help me understand your personal.
reasonings for this huge difference in figures.

I agree that there is no way that this board is 90% atheist. That would put us on par with the membership of The National Academy of Sciences. Great company to be in, if it were true.
I think that what others have said is true, that we have a higher percentage of atheists because we were forced to critically examine all religion, including and especially our own. We eventually realized how people are fooled. It is the same reason so many of the great skeptics that don't believe in supernatural forces were and are magicians. Harry Houdini, James Randi, Penn & Teller, Michael Shermer. All great skeptics, all with a background in magic. When you've seen how the box is built, you stop believing the woman was really cut in half.

Noah's ark - Can't believe I once actually thought it was true
by sam_sane_now inwhen i was a jw i didn't even question that the noah's ark story might not be true.
i didn't realise that it wasn't achievable for a handful of people to gather literally millions of animals - two of each kind - and fit them into a boat where they would all survive for many days.
i didn't think about the fact that if the highest mountain was covered with water then how could plant life like trees and flowers come to exist again, especially so soon after, with the raven grabbing an olive leaf was it?

I have just recently started to question this type of thing.
You will probably find this interesting:

--The Orwellian World Of Jehovah's Witnesses, Heather and Gary Botting
That's a great passage. I've never heard of this book, but it's on Amazon and you can read a preview on Google Books. I'm gonna order it right now. Thanks.

Gary, the biggest problem with your example is that witnesses tend to flip it around and say "isn't it wonderful that Jehovah was able to provide for the Israelites so they could get through such an impossible situation!"
I don't have that much problem with "Jehovah provided", I guess, if you have already made the leap that he exists and this was his will. What I have a major problem with is why he sent down a legion of angels every morning with brooms and dustbusters to get rid of all evidence that that huge mass of people were ever there! Or for that matter why he went and destroyed all the evidence they were ever in Egypt at all! Was it just to make it harder for future generations to believe his written word? I think it's hard enough to believe without him stacking the deck like that.

Einstein on God....Rare Letter At Auction
by hillary_step inthis rare letter gives us a good insight into the 'religious' views of einstein, oft quoted by mainstream religionists in the hope that they could glean from him some allusion to his belief in a conventional 'god'.. why his views on god or even the rear end of marilyn monroe would be of much interest has always eluded me, but it is just as well that we all know that einstein did not believe in any god, at least not in the conventional sense, so that defenders of the bible and a god free of sociopathy are not tempted to haul his einsteined majesty before the court of debate again.. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/articlenews/story/ctvnews/20080513/einstein_letter_080513/20080513?hub=scitech.

Vinny, Einstein said people with your beliefs are weak and childish. I think that's what you should take away from this. You have proven him correct in dramatic fashion tonight.

An Interesting YouTube debate I had with a JW
by B_Deserter inso most of you have probably seen my youtube video what you should know about jehovah's witnesses, which can be found here.
naturally, this draws quite a negative response from the jw community, but this particular person decided to send me a personal message.. you wanna talk smack about witnesses or anyone in general you better have your facts straight.
everything you said is taken almost enitrly out of context to our true practices.

It's sad when you have to educate someone about what they believe before you tell them why it's wrong. You did a nice job with this dimwit.

My Wife Is Getting A Sheparding Call
by sacolton ini've disassociated myself since february.
i made no secret of my disapproval of the wtbts and was very vocal to my doubts of it being god's true organization on earth to the po.
now, the po and another elder has scheduled to talk with my wife tonight for a sheparding call at the home of the book study.

Not only will she view this as spiritual endangerment but she will likely get an undue amount of attention from Single brothers who are looking for her out for her "spiritual health".
This is exactly how I lost my wife. I wrote about it here: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/7/155013/1.ashx
...After that, she gave up on me. I could see it in her eyes. Her love for me was gone. She began coming home later and later, going directly to bed without saying a word unless I spoke to her. Eventually she developed a relationship with a very attractive younger ministerial servant. In him I know she saw the man I once was, because that’s exactly what I saw when I looked at him. After a few months of this, when I began to realize how close they were becoming, I asked her to put an end to it for the sake of our marriage. She moved out instead.
It is very difficult to keep a marriage together when one spouse is a strict JW and one has moved on. I wish you the best of luck.
