  when you were in the org, did you ever really have a relationship with jehovah?

  if so, how did this relationship manifest itself?

  First off, I love and totally agree with Giordano's answer. I relate to the sentiment at least, if not the specifics. Never been a fisherman myself.

  Second, no, I didn't. I always felt like I was missing something in that regard, the same way I felt like I was missing all the "joy" of participating in field service. I always thought that I would get it eventually, probably the same way that some Buddhist monks believe that if they meditate long enough they will eventually be able to levitate. I now realize that having a relationship with an invisible being that does not offer any evidence to support his own existence is no more logical.

  Yeah I don't get it. And The Cape is the worst thing I've seen on TV in a decade. It's just insulting to it's audience and unintentionally laugh out loud funny. It won't make it to spring.

  i re-read it after someone posted to it and brought it back on active topics and it was kind of prophetic in a way ... well, i had the 5 years part right if nothing else:.

  it would be nice to visit the site (or whatever one is around then) in 5 years time to let people know how we're doing and find only a few of the same people still around.

  I'm so glad this got bumped. This is the first time I've come across it and I just read all five parts. Thank you for what you did Simon. This site was a huge help for me when I was leaving. It was so helpful to know that so many others stood where I stood and felt the way I felt. Thank you.

  Question for Elders (current or former) regarding Judicial Committees.

  the new shepherding the flock book says that if a jw involved in a j.c. threatens legal action or to go to the media, the elders should suspend any action and contact headquarters for instruction.

  has anyone here been involved in a j.c. where this occurred?

  i am considering taking this route as a last resort and am wondering how effective it is..

  I really don't think there are a lot of women that are offended by the term "chick". I think it comes down to whether or not she likes you. If she does, she'll probably think it's cute. If she acts offended, you probably never had a shot in the first place.

  The WTS has made a point of praising Jesus for his teaching style, specifically that he used clear, simple language and parables that the common, largely uneducated audience that he was addressing could easily understand. If we grant them that, that Jesus was able to frame his message in terms that were clearly understandable (and that certainly is the way the bible portrays him), then it is inconceivable that their current "light" is even remotely close to what Jesus meant by "this generation". It's laughable. It is not what "generation" means, pure and simple. They might as well explain the passage with Bible Code-esque counting of the spaces between the letters.

  Imagine someone trying to use the word generation the way that the WTS is claiming Jesus was using it. Imagine, for example, a 98 year old woman speaking to her 14 year old great grandson:

  Great grandma "Wow, this generation sure is stubborn!"

  Great grandson "Which generation?"

  "You know. Ours!"

  "Yours and Great Granddads?"

  "No boy! Yours and mine. You know, the generation that remembers when cars were rare and that invented Facebook. The generation that fought two world wars, the Korean war, Vietnam, and two Gulf Wars! The generation whose parents were gold prospectors and hippy radicals at woodstock. The generation that saw man first walk on the moon and can't remember a world without the internet. You know, our generation!"

  "OK grandma. Lets get your pills..."

  There is absolutely no rational definition in which my generation, those born in the mid seventies, are the same as the generation that wept at the Beatles playing on Ed Sullivan, let alone the generation that remembers when indoor plumbing was optional.

  Attention JWs: it isn't a code. You were just wrong, and your more and more far-fetched apologism is just getting embarrassing now.

  I agree with the sentiment that "true religion" is an oxymoron. However, I think I understand the spirit of the question. If the question were instead "what proves that Jehovah's Witnesses are wrong', than http://www.jwfacts.com/ is the best resource I have ever found.

  in george orwell's novel 'nineteen eighty-four' the capitulation of the principal protagonist is portrayed in his willingness to assent to the proposition that two and two make five.

  once he had denied objective reality, his mental conquest was complete and he was no longer truly the master of his own mind.

  nineteen eighty-four is in many ways, a very depressing read.. a charge commonly leveled at jehovah's witnesses is that the type of mind control envisioned by orwell has been and continues to be used on them.

  A little advice, Alice: Put your arguments in your own words. Enough already with the copy and pasting. I gloss over your copy & pasted articles trying to find your thoughts on them. I'm sure most others do as well. The reason is that many, if not most, of us here are very familiar with the WTB&TS's stance and reasoning points on these issues. I myself gave public talks for many years and was married to a regular pioneer. I understand how they reason. I disagree with it. I'm not interested in reading reprinted WT articles. Tell us what YOU think. Respond directly. Reference articles if you wish, but don't copy and paste. Any of us could look that stuff up on the CD ROM if we cared to.

  Was God over reacting destroying the whole planet in Noah's flood to kill afew evil people...too bad Noah forgot the Unicorns and Dinosaurs according to the Watchtower!

  Strike a nerve, did I? I didn't say anything about literacy. I mentioned Scientific literacy. And no, not all theists are scientifically illiterate. Kenneth Miller is a good example of a theist (Catholic, I believe) that is also a scientist. You would do well to look him up and see what an intellectually honest theist sounds like. However, the clown that you quoted is either a liar or scientifically illiterate. If he wasn't, he would make genuine assertions and hypotheses backed up by data instead of nonsensical fantasies from imagination land.

  And no, I don't deliver pizzas. I have owned a successful company for the last twenty years. I have 15 - 20 employees at any given time and I make a very comfortable living. No that that matters.

  There was also a supreme being controlling events that had a plan for the survival of the diversity of life as we know it.

  This is the line that is absolutely necessary for anyone to even remotely entertain the nonsensical ideas that came before it. It is also the quote that makes everything that came before it unnecessary. In other words "obviously the bizarre and ridiculous special pleading I just spewed out makes no scientific sense. But you're forgetting one thing: God did it!" It works in any situation. Which makes me wonder why creationists even pretend to explain the flood by science.

  Scientist: The amount of water falling at a volume sufficient to cover the earth in the time specified in the flood account would have generated so much heat that the oceans would have literally boiled away.

  Creationist: Some speculate that their may have been larger ice caps before the flood. Their melting would have cooled the water to the degree necessary to counteract that sciencey thing you just said. Besides, "there was also a supreme being controlling events that had a plan for the survival of the diversity of life as we know it."

  Scientist: Raising the water level sufficient to cover the entire earth would have caused a dramatic rise in air pressure that would have made human survival at that altitude impossible.

  Creationist: We know from the historical record, the bible, that humans lived dramatically longer in the years before the flood. Some speculate, therefore, that their bodies were far more resilient and could therefore have withstood higher air pressure levels. In fact, it could be that the strain of going through such intense physical stress is what caused humans to have dramatically shorter lives after the flood. Besides, "there was also a supreme being controlling events that had a plan for the survival of the diversity of life as we know it."

  I can't continue this any longer. I think my point is made. It's easy to explain any idea that you wish to propose when you A) Don't have anything but the most basic grasp of science, B) Are writing or speaking for an audience that is at the same level of scientific illiteracy as you, and C) have the ace up your sleeve that anything that is impossible was actually done by the invisible wizard in the sky.
