i havent' been to kingdom hall in over a year, and i haven't talked to any dubs other than my parents for three years now.
i was wondering if anybody still had any contacts in the truth and how the average dub is feeling about the immediacy of armageddon?.
i remember growing up that this was an omnipresent motivation, especially when the whole "peace and security" thing happened in the early nineties, and we were expecting "sudden destruction" after the collapse of the soviet union.. but safe to say, i'm not worried about armageddon anymore - and i was wondering what the feeling was in the congregations.... czar
Most of my immediate family have been "in" thirty to fourty years or more and they all tell me the same thing. Armageddon is irrelevent and unimportant, and always has been. The real issue is to serve Jehovah in a way that is pleasing to Him!

I can't find the link to the thread but somewhere here there is a thread that talks about a planning application that they have put in earlier this year. In that application it says that the development is part of a ten year expansion programme.
So we are safe for ten years at least!

Can anyone explain to me what the end has to do with being a Witness?
I am told on good authority that the object of becoming a Witness is to "serve Jehovah". It has nothing whatsoever to do with living forever on a paradise earth.
My response to that was "why have slogans like Millions Now Living Will Never Die and books like the Live Forever book?".
"No answer" was the stern reply.

Don't worry I asked that question too. Apparently the info was given by a speaker at some Assembly or Convention or possibly a special talk by a Bethel brother, I don't remember which exactly. I could find out. Anyway, it certainly does not appear in writing anywhere that I know of.

Can I just say how it was explained to me.
At one time the 144,000 were all there waiting for Armageddon. As the time for this drew closer some of these anointed had second thoughts and dropped out leaving less than the required total.
Out of the 8000 + currently available candidates, sufficient have been selected to make up the number. However these newbies have to prove themselves before they can be "sealed" and this is the reason we are waiting.
It makes no sense whatsoever to me but it makes them feel good to explain it all to me.

When I brought that up they said the article was only drawing attention to parallels between Naoh’s time and our day and it wasn’t trying to indicate anything other than that. I have never yet met anyone that has won an argument with a JW. They have an answer for everything even if it makes no logical sense.

I have consulted our local version of "Scholar" who advises me as follows.
Genesis 6:3 is telling us two things, a) that as from the year 2490 b.c. the life expectancy of man will be reduced to 120 years and b) the flood would occur in 2610 b.c. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Armageddon.
Armageddon is just waiting the "final sealing" of the last of the 144,000 because some of the first team dropped out due to apostasy. Since nobody knows how long this process will take it is impossible to put a time scale or date on it.
This is the current local thinking as provided to me yesterday.

the way i currently understand it from reading the bible is that as time passes and events .
unfold the meaning of certain information given in the scriptures will become clearer.. i do not see anywhere where it indicates that new light is a method of replacing one .

understanding with a completely new and different one. It appears to be a method of adding
to existing knowledge, not a way of replacing that knowledge with something completely
different.
The WTS seem to have a completely different understanding of the principle and they use the
new light doctrine to make 180 and sometimes 360 degree turns in their teaching. Is there
something in the Bible to back up their understanding that I have missed. There in fact
does not appear to be anything in the Bible to indicate that new light even applies to doctrinal
matters, it appears to relate only to the explanations that it gives redarding certain matters.
I would appreciate the opinions of those interested in such matters.
