RR You are being very disingenuous when you say there is only one line of evidence pointing to 586/87. You are far too intelligent not to realise this and therefore it detracts from the other points that you make.
You may well say that the numerous pointers to 586/87 are unsubstantiated as hard evidence cannot be provided to prove their accuracy ? everyone would grant you that point. However each of the differing lines that are provided are completely independent of each other yet still point to the same thing. There are no similar lines to support the 607 date, so to say these are still to be discovered takes a little swallowing. (Your post of 02.22 of 26 Sept refers.)

i plan to call up the branch office and pose as an 'interested one' and ask a bunch of difficult questions i am almost positive no jw witness will be able to ansewr.
1. if the supposed "light is getting brighter" then does that not mean that it is possile that many of the teachings that the society is teaching now may be false such as blood transfusions and the 1914 teaching?
2. since any witness who speaks against the wt and refutes one of their teachings and is therefore disfellowshipped for it, what if the very teaching that they spoke against turned out to be wrong later on?
When determining the year of the destruction of the Temple at Jerusalem as given in their modern publications, did the Society take into consideration all of the available information including all of that which became known in the twentieth century?
They won?t give you a "yes" or "no" answer.

just my 2 cents but if i was to post what i would consider to be the single most convincing arrogant blunder of the wt(for me in my time) it would have to be below.
: when i heard this 'proclamation' i, (and many others at my cong) were convinced that this had to finally be it.
because there just was no way the wt could possibly say no babies again and not have it be the final,real ready rapture.

if you're a dunderhead on neo-babylonian history (like me) you've probably remained totally clueless whenever the subject of the chronology leading to back 607 b.c.
since i had nothing better to do today, i decided to finally take the time it takes to understand why dub chronology on that date is wrong.
this piece of information alone should give you a clue about how bored i am!.
Excuse my ignorance but the Bible says THESE NATIONS will serve the King of Babylon for 70 years. It does not say that the JEWISH NATION - or any single nation will serve for all of the 70 years.
A date for the start of the Jewish exile cannot be fixed from the Bible records and there is no valid reason that it had to be 70 years in length. All the indications are that The nations as a whole served Babylon for 70 years with the majority of the Jewish people serving about 50 of them.

various media reports indicate that the wbts often employs the services of a large number of lawyers and i have seen it suggested that some of the top legal minds amongst them are in fact jehovahs witnesses.. since a qualified and experienced lawyer will have been trained in the art of digging out and scrutinising factual information, how come these people are jw?s?
if they applied their training, to the lest extent, to an examination of "the truth" (tm) it would quickly be seen as a load of bull puckey, even by a halfwit.
it could not possibly stand up to proper scrutiny by a person trained and qualified in the legal profession.
Perhaps my own comments on my own thread are a bit misleading. I wasn?t really questioning the ability of intelligent people to believe "the truth" because I know many myself. My question concerns those who have a special training and an ability to separate fact from fiction and who still believe in it.
To say that all these people simply switch off to reality when it suits them is difficult to believe. Or are they all somehow immune to cognitive dissonance because of their profession?

Many thanks for all your responses. My problem was simply this; if people who are highly trained and qualified in searching out, investigating, and verifying facts can find no problem with believing "the truth" (TM) , why can?t I with my humble education?

marx reckoned religion was the opium of the people, i'm no marx, but i reckon jwd has become the opium of the exjws.
it satisfies a need, gives one a purpose, feels someone with a greater sense of purpose, trys to give one a purpose and reason for being here, and very closely becomes a "religion" of sorts to many.
many here claim they stay to help others out of the wbts, where in fact i think they stay because it has become their new "opium" its a focal point they can meet with like minded individuals to further their own new "belief".
Whenever the boards resident "wind-up artist" casts his net he can be sure that all the same posters will swim into it faster than the speed of light.
Forgive the metaphors but its like watching iron-filings shoot towards a magnet.
It would be interesting to see which poster has the highest number of response per thread started.
