why are some of the pivotal events of jesus' life as recorded in the gospels shamelessly borrowed from pagan predecessors?
the following list is not supposed to be exhaustive: immaculate conception, son of god, death and resurrection, the last supper celebrated with bread and wine, an incarnate god who dies on a cross to redeem all sins, .... h. .

Zoroasterianism predates christianity. I have seen claims that christianity draws huge chunks of belief from Zoroasterianism, but from the (admittedly very little) research I have done they don't seem similar at all.
Does anyone know more about this?

No. When you are baptized, you explicitly swear an oath dedicating your life to the Watchtower Biblical Lies Society. Any volunteer or charity work outside of the organization is severely frowned upon and will be punished accordingly. You are expected to spend ALL of your free time "volunteering" to go around and knock on empty houses.

WOW. They sure don't print stuff like that anymore.
Rather poorly put together; instead of wasting time trying to evangelize the dubs into "accepting christ", they should have looked at an exegetical analysis of Acts to prove that Paul was only referring to christians who lived among jews, and that gentile christians were permitted to eat blood (let alone take a transfusion to save their life.)

99% of all jw's believe and are taught that to survive armageddon that you must be a jw or as a minimum be.

however the april 1 "public" issue of the watchtower has some interesting wording.
It's the public version. They're obviously going to have 3 sets of teachings now; a bland, mild, mainstream one for the general public; the crazy cult teachings for the R&F; and the ritualized, sanctioned sexual abuse for the high & mighty elders. Remember that it's long been taught that it's ok to lie to or conceal certain teachings to a new study, in order to not turn them off too quickly.
The private Watchtowers still include dire warnings about how all non-dubs and even the majority of dubs are going to be roasted/crushed by giant hailstones at Armageddon.
i've had a few light and heavy conversations (always peaceful, always "asking" rather than telling), with my jw friend.
i just received the latest free minds journal and wondered about sending "anonymously" page 11 to her.
it gives all the flip-flops of what a generation is, according to the wts.. we have touched on a variety of subjects that she just knew the wt could explain, but alas they could not!

if you had some leaflets printed out and when a dub knocked on your door you could pretend you are doing research into religions and cults ,and you are searching for truth but want to be carefull not to get involved with a cult , give them a leaflet and ask them to check whether their religion fits any of the categorys , then watch them either outright lie to you or watch them look more horrified each one they read , maybe you could try it on your family thats in too .
I remember reading somewhere - I think it was on jwfacts - that the most important sign of a cult is whether or not contact with former members is permitted. No legitimate group would restrict contact with former members.
