Mustaches are okay, but beards are not. Suits and dresses are the only acceptable forms of clothing for worship.
How many times is the term "governing body" found in Bible? How many times is the term "faithful and discreet slave"? Compare this with the number of times Jesus is mentioned, whom the Bible refers to as our exemplar, the head of the congregation, our redeemer, and the one to whom all authority in heaven and earth has been given, in whose name every knee should bow. Just sayin.
We need to record and report the time we spend preaching, and appointments in the congregation are based mainly on this.
Accepting certain fractions of blood is a conscience matter.
The generation of Matthew 24 is actually 2 overlapping generations.

Living Through the Brief Liberalization of Jehovah's Witnesses, Never Recovering
by TMS inwith the book crisis of conscience detailing the turbulence at bethel during the early to mid 70's, the transformation from autocratic rule to governance by committee or a body of men, many of us can speak to how that felt among the rank and file of the local congregations during those years.
we learned new concepts based in large part to research done for the aid to bible understanding volume, then we were asked or coerced into unlearning those principles, going back to the old ways.
some of us never readjusted, finding ourselves very different from our more hardline compadres.. the inertia for the changes that eventually were initiated in the congregations came from the discovery that the greek words episkopos and presbyteros were used biblically to refer to all qualified men in a congregation, not just one.

My father wandered into this cult in the early 70s. Being a baby then I never knew there was a time when JWs were more liberal. I found this thread fascinating and am sad the freedom didn't last.

Which Governing Body Members Do You Believe Read "Crisis Of Conscience"?
by JimmyPage inmy guess would be the ones featured prominently in the book.
franz speculated on different directions the wt doctrine might eventually take and he was proved right.
perhaps his ideas were considered by some to be good solutions to the corners they painted themselves into and stolen on that basis.

I totally agree, wha. I know if I was featured prominently in someone else's book I would definitely want to know what was being said.

I have to wonder if some of them did, especially when it first came out. My guess would be the ones featured prominently in the book. Franz speculated on different directions the WT doctrine might eventually take and he was proved right. Perhaps his ideas were considered by some to be good solutions to the corners they painted themselves into and stolen on that basis. It would be hard to believe that no Governing Body member has ever read the book.

Are They Cynically Shutting Down The Organization?
by metatron ini've raised this idea before but recent events seem to support it.
changes in the watchtower may be guided by more than a need for cash flow: they may simply be liquidating/shutting it down as discreetly as possible.. of course, this doesn't mean they stop working on their upstate ny country club - but it could mean that the throrough going exposure and disproof of their beliefs on the internet, when it emerged, took many of them by surprize, as it did many of us!
after awhile, they generally gave up trying to make any sense of their doctrines - and coupled with cash flow issues - moved towards a quiet retreat.. take a look at a few things:.

I think the convention drama a few years ago offered insight into a conflict that was going on within the Watchtower Society. I think there were some members who, like the character Scolios, wanted to make changes to the organization for the better. In the end though these ideas were demonized and squashed by the Governing Body as being a return to false religious thinking. And now the grip of these madmen is tightening.

It's the holidays! You aren't a JW, but are you still a killjoy?
by JimmyPage indidn't you spend enough time sucking the fun out of the holidays?
why do a minority of ex-jws still need to point out self-righteously that the origins of these celebrations are sometimes less than desirable?
yes, we all know that the american indian was not treated well by the white man.

Yes, we all know that the American Indian was not treated well by the white man. But this is a time for families to build traditions together and be thankful for the good things in our lives.
Yes, we realize that Jesus was probably not all that he has been made out to be in the Bible. But let the kids enjoy the presents, the pageantry, and the wonder of this time of year!
If you want to be a party pooper then go back to the Watchtower Society! If people are this annoying as former Witnesses I can only imagine how grating they were as full-fledged brainwashed cult members.

... and I say hi. It feels really good. There was a teenager who dropped me off his Facebook right before he got DF'd (I guess he thought I'm a true believer) and I was hoping I might run into him.
Sure enough I saw him the other day out and about. He started to say hi and was probably unsure how I'd react. I just treated him like I would have before. We had a bit of conversation and while we're not best friends I'd like to think it helped him have a better day.
The last time I saw him he looked like his parents were dragging him to the Hall. That was a while back and I never saw him there since (not that I attend very regularly myself).
There's also a disfellowshipped guy who works at the same place I saw this teenager and I always say him to him too and ask him about his kid.
I guess there's not a whole lot of story here, other than to say that it feels good to behave in a normal fashion!
